Force Awakens SPOILER thread

I enjoyed watching it, it just didn't have that "holy sh**" factor that the first couple of movies had.  Maybe I am older and more jaded these days but it didn't leave me with a "wow."

I thought it was pretty obvious from the start that Rey was either Luke's or Leia's, and when Han didn't react and Kylo Ren didn't say anything, that left one choice.

I was disappointed by the recycled jokes and dialog. I really wanted something new after 40 years of quoting the first one.

The First order just didn't seem menacing enough. They had numbers, but I don't think they really frightened anyone.

What struck me was, as others have said, how fun the movie was, as well as how humorous. "..I don't know who talks first. Do I talk first, you talk first?" "I'll talk my way out of it. It ALWAYS works." "STOP TAKING MY HAND." etc. The way those stormtroopers just turn around with a big ol' nope when Kylo flies off the handle. While not a comedy by any means, there is a lot of appreciated levity here.

I'm guessing that Rey is Luke's daughter. Much noise was made about her family as well as Kylo's. Han may very well have known who she is, hence his apparent care for her. Leia may or may not. I'm of the mind Luke himself may not know. We'll see, presumably in episode VIII.

My main problem is the ill-explained Republic. We get them back in the opening scroll, then they're summarily obliterated without ever having done anything, or making it clear what, precisely, the conflict between them and the First Order is, much less why the Resistance is called that. That seems to imply that the First Order then is still the legitimate government, right? So if that's the case, what exactly was the new Republic doing? There are smaller things that others have mentioned that I wish might be a little different, but this is what bothered me most. Still a fun movie though. I look forward to seeing it again.

Part of the reason the reveal of Luke's parentage works so well in the original trilogy is that it isn't foreshadowed, like, at all before, like, halfway through Empire. Part of the reason the deal with Rey feels so problematic is that they're clearly belaboring the point in setting it up for A BIG HUGE OMG REVEAL later. Han and Leia's Meaningful Glances and buddying up to her--all of it overplays what ought to be a relatively simple--but enjoyable--hand. Going back to the hamhandedness of things, like in a number of other situations JJ simply could've dialed it back a notch and it actually would've worked more effectively.

Because fanfiction.

Though, seriously, they no doubt wanted that connection back to the originals. "Anakin" was prolly a little too on the nose, and I'm guessing Luke prolly won't have a son, at any rate, appearing in these films, so that frees "Ben" up.

You kidding me?  I was marking out like it was the 80's and the Hulkster just entered the ring

Plan on seeing it again over Xmas break.

Still gonna poke fun at it though.  I'm still a pre-adolescent boy at heart.  I tease the girls I like

my husband is rather annoyed, because he read the books growing up. The ones that came after the movies, and were canon up until this movie came out and olbliterated all the novel story lines as basically fanfiction

he's very annoyed about that. he liked the books, and they WERE canon....until now.

Because unlike with the new Star Trek, this one is not touted as a alternate universe. This is the new canon, this wipes all those book series away.

Though it does feel like a bit like a re done A New Hope XD

Hehe. I'll probably go see it again. Will definitely see it on disc when it comes out. I didn't hate it. I don't know if I'm "jaded," even, so much as I just can't sit there and turn my head off and stare at the screen. There's no enjoyment for me in purposefully not engaging with a text--and it takes a massive effort to turn a blind eye and take Awakens at face value, predicated upon the viewer's prior knowledge as it is.

Anyway, I'm actually thrilled to see people discussing it. The Internet echo chamber's sealed up so tight on this thing I'm actually kind of surprised, but reading others' thoughtful input makes the movie a lot more fun for me.

Have to admit, it seemed quite predictable.  I think the only two surprises for me was the revelation of the "garbage" and when Han and Chewie showed up on the Millennium Falcon(probably thinking too hard about the toxic gas that had just been mentioned to see that one coming).  Once we saw the Millennium Falcon's flight on Jakku I knew that despite what I had seen in the trailer that Rey would be the Jedi.  I'm sure she will be Luke's daughter just so they can have an "I am your father" moment in the second film though I can still see her being Ren's sister.  Those two definitely have a connection of some sort.  I'm also curious to find out if Palpatine survived his fall and now calls himself Snoak.

Now that I'm an adult, it's definitely a different experience.  At least twice I had to remind myself this is a space FANTASY and not a SCIENCE fiction.  And all the games I play now are not the best influence in cases like this when it comes to strategy.  It drove me crazy when the X-Wing pilot made a comment about their bombing run.  I just wanted to grab him by the collar and scream "IDIOT!  If your making bombing runs then why did you only bring upgraded X-Wing FIGHTERS and NOT bring some upgraded Y-Wing BOMBERS!"

Still, I loved the movie.  I really enjoyed it despite these flaws.  The scene when Han, Chewie, and Finn are captured and the X-Wings arrive, there wings spreading.  This sent shivers of excitement throughout my body.; like I was a kid again and when I saw them begin to spread their wings to go into battle.    Han and Leia meet again and stare at each other in silence, it feels like a candle being relit-and then C-3PO, in true C-3PO fashion, steps in.  Finn's excitement when he gets his name.  So much humor and so much energy within the action.  I'll be seeing it at least one more time in the theaters.

That's the source of pretty much all my questions. Is it more of a remake or is it its own thing? Can it be both? Is it actually trying to be both? Is it echoing or is it trotting out the same old thing?

Wait, so is Finn not a Jedi, too?
