Has anyone already pointed out this hilarious live-tweeting of a woman watching the original trilogy for the very first time?

Here's the first one (Episode Four):

Space Voldemort vs Whiny Space Criminals:

In which I watch Star Wars Episode 4 for the very first time

SPACE INDIANA JONES IS HERE

But why can't he pronounce "falcon"

Was reading some of the (hilarious) social media backlash to criticism of Awakens and along the way got directed to some dude's shot-for-shot comparison of the changes that have been made to the originals. The ones in Star Wars aren't that bad, aside from Greedo's shooting first (do I want my hero to be the guy who shot first? Why, yes, George. Yes, I do); he was just busying things up too much, and pointlessly so. Jabba ultimately wasn't so bad. I actually am totally fine with the Emperor's replacement in Empire, and white-Cookie-Monster wampa bonus footage is okay; though George again gets carried away busying up backgrounds in Cloud City. Most of it's innocuous, at any rate, until Jedi, at which point he totally butchers the performance at Jabba's palace and wrecks the Force-ghosts scene at the end in a sad, dumb way.

At any rate, trying to convince myself to go ahead and pick up one of the bastardized versions, just to see them again as close as I can. Been a while, and I'm not sure it matters too much, anyway. Looking at the 2013 edition, for simplicity's/cheapness's sake. Want to watch the originals before the prequels. The belief that one should watch something in a story's chronological order rather than the order in which it's produced is the same belief that led to George's ruining the originals. Star Wars is labeled the fourth "chapter," yes, but it'll never be the fourth movie in the series anymore than The Phantom Menace will be the first. I think this same misconception on George's part led to a number of his poor decisions in the prequels. Either way, the originals inform the prequels, but the prequels never should try to, nor ultimately can, inform the originals. Because spacetime.

Anyway, coming full circle, I agree with those who find disappointing the manner in which Awakens seems scarcely bothered by the events of the earlier films. Not because anyone wants to watch Han and Leia's happily ever after, as though that's the only alternative, but the galaxy seems oddly disconnected from the major events that formed it.

Meanwhile, Star Wars continuity speculation from 1982.

Thanks for sharing that link to the shot by shot comparison videos Marvin.

That was more informative than I had expected as I knew of the obvious additions but hadn't noticed many of the smaller changes and didn't know that things were still being changed with each release of the DVDs/BluRays, like how many times the Han shot first scene had been re-edited.

I only watched Part I & II of the comparison videos, but I plan on watching them all.

It's amazing that he's been screwing with them since before the prequels, even. I was thinking the '97 editions were still the originals, but nope (which means the killer VHS set my family had was ~5 years older than that [which makes the math work out right, anyway]). Just over and over again, every few years. Shame and an embarrassment that he didn't know when to quit.

Well this conversation has made me dig out my old Star Wars VHS tapes and DVD's to see just what the heck I have.

-Star Wars VHS tape dated 1992. To paraphrase Scotty, "No bloody Episode IV, No bloody A New Hope" mentioned anywhere on the box or tape. Maybe the original version? I should note that I did at one time own an older version, but I wore it out.

-Star Wars Trilogy VHS tape set dated 1995. Sleeve states its the final video release of Star Wars in its original version. Also states it has the best sound and picture quality yet thanks to THX Digitaly Mastering.

-Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition VHS tape set dated 1997. Has the newly added scenes.

-Star Wars Trilogy tin box DVD set dated 2006. States it has both the original Theatrical release versions of all three movies as well as the new version. I've never actually opened this up.

-Star Wars Trilogy on BluRay set dated 2011. New versions only.

Wow! Who'd a thunk I actually own more versions of the Star Wars movies than I have of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

And any rumours that I also have multiple copies of "The Trilogy That Shall Not Be Named" were started by a scruffy-looking nerf herder and aren't worthy of a response. <_<

This one is worth a LOT of money now. In excess of $300 from what research I did online for USED version.

That came up in conversation in another thread a while back. I figure I'll just keep it sealed for now since that's kind of a crazy price and it might get crazier.

And if Disney does rerelease the original versions and kills the collectibility of the set, I can open It up and finally watch them.

Yeah, there are rumors swirling that Disney and Fox are going to team up and re-release the OT w/o all the stuff added in, but nothing substantiated. If/when they do, I'll be sure to get them on blu-ray (or whatever the best is at that time). I just wish (as I said before) that I'd never gotten rid of my set when I upgraded to the "special editions."

Yeah, I tracked down those original theatrical release DVD sets 2 years ago for Christmas, and they were $90 each.  They are numbered IV, V, VI.

And holy crap have they gone up in price.  Amazon has them now for $175 each, although A New Hope is only $50

Glad I got them when I did.

If you do get them, just make sure you check the info, because some of the sets have the theatrical releases from the 90's, not the original sets.

I've got a DVD set with both the original theatrical, and special editions. It didn't cost me that much. Of course I tend to stick to the theatrical releases, as they are what I grew up with.

When did you get them? They've gone up a lot in price the last few months (probably because of FA being released).
