Balto Burrowell (02510) Redux

Recommended Posts

So here is Balto Burrowell, in the primer.

The reason I am starting here, is that this was one of the minis that I was going to paint for the Fall Exchange. The problem is that when I was stripping the last of the paint from him with my Dremel tool and a wire brush, I ground off his nose with the chuck of the tool!

Needless to say I was upset, and had to order a new mini to paint.

I kept him around to remind me to be a little smarter and more careful when using power tools on minis, and he has always been giving me the evil eye from my painting desk, sitting there un primed, with Frankenstein's hand me down boots, as I never finished removing the base from under his feet.

So I was doing some putty work the other evening, and decided to give him some plastic surgery!

I put a tiny dab of green stuff on his face, and tried to shape it so that it looked like the original.

I tried an X Acto knife, my clay shapers, dental picks, and finally, a straight pin.

How people sculpt these things on these little guys is beyond me!

(Yes I did see Cornelius Dapperbear, I am surprised Talespinner can still see!)

So here is Balto, let me know what you think of his nose!

Painting to commence tonight, after the Liquid green stuff dries...

That is a LOVELY aquiline nose that speaks of an inner nobility...the fact that it doesn't look like it has ever been broken speaks your sculpting skill. A GREAT start!

Thanks Guys!

I think the right side came out great, not so sure about the left, but certainly much better than the syphalitic skull look he had after meeting Mr Chuck E Dremel!

So beginning the painting...

All Paints Scale 75 unless otherwise noted.

Started with GW Scorched Brown in the eye sockets, followed by Vallejo Ivory for the whites. Eclipse Grey pupils.

These are a little off as well, but his eyes are tiny...

Face is Arabic Shadow, followed by Basic Flesh, and Golden Skin.

Some glazes with a mix of Basic Flesh with a touch of Golden Skin to reclaim some of the mid tone, and for blending, then some very small re touches in the shadows with Arabic Shadow.

As with the other projects being restarted after Takky (Going to have to date all my painting as Before / After Takky!) Just a little bit going on, but it is progress!

Used my Black 'Magic Wash' on his hair and beard, and noticed that I must hav dropped him at some point, as there is a big smooth spot on the back of his head...

NOT stripping him again....

Plus he also gets the benefit of better camera work...

(The shine is from the Future floor wax that is a component of the 'Magic Wash' formula that I use.)

Little bit of high lighting on his hair and beard with Anthracite Grey...

Added Graphite to his hair and beard, followed by a glaze of Secret Weapon Soft Body Black.

Going to do another glaze or 2, then move on to his clothes...

Started on his clothes with some Deep Blue.

I am going to kind of reprise the paint job I did for the fall exchange last year with him, as I liked the way he came out.

Pics:

The Small pic was an attempt to get more of the pic to focus better by pulling the camera way back and really cropping the image.

Guess I don't need to do that again!

I am also surprised how 'Scarred' looking the left side of his face is...

Doesn't look anywhere near that bad in hand...

The camera is not being my friend

More coats of Deep Blue, and started to do the sash, which I had forgotten, Some Sahara Yellow on his vest, and Black Forest Green on his pants...

Been on a painting spree these last few months, in fact Cassie is mini 52 painted so far this year, out of my original goal of painting 50 all year.

First up is Elliwyn Heatherlark, Gnome Bard (SKU 77164) which is the bones version.  The details were a bit soft, but she is totally serviceable for table-top.

Next up, Blink Berenwicket (SKU 3689), the super spunky female gnome warrior in metal.  The sword didn't really turn out, and I should have had a side view...  Metals are shaded metallics.

And last but not least, Cassie, Female Gnome Wizard (SKU 77031) in bones and mini number 52 of the year.

Blink Berenwicket, Female Gnome by Bobby Jackson is also available in metal sku# 03732. The armor is painted with some ancient GW green metallic. I experimented with blue metallic on the sword but I'm not overly thrilled with the result but it is good enough to call done :)

Painted for one of my Player characters. Almost a speed paint. Original goal was to get done quickly, but started to take a little more time with her than I planned.

      Hello guys,

It's been a while since I posted a mini, as I've been sick, been on a business trip, and just generally busy, but here is a figure I just completed last night, a Julie Guthrie figure from "All Things Dark and Dangerous" back in the eighties:

Upon retrospect I'm wondering if I should have given her eyebrows, don't know if without looks very unnatural?

In any case, here's the "original" set of figures, with the delightful ladies that came in the original blister pack:

      Hope you enjoy!

So I finished up this teeny tiny figure for my ex last night, and thought I would show her off...

       Thanks for looking!
