Dwarven Forge Caverns Tabletop Paint Job

I spent today working on my Dwarven Forge Cavern terrain. A friend and I split the 5 set pack and then I bought a few add ons. Also, I am using the Game Decor Paintworks paints (the Cavern Stone Set).

What I did today:

  • Layout all of my cavern terrain
  • Put Cavern Stone Base Coat on 71 pieces (all of the corners, all of the normal floors, some of the other pieces). This step may be skipped later. It just didn't change the color much from the base Dwarvenite (see below)
  • Apply Cavern Stone Build Up to said pieces.

The plan tomorrow is to apply the highlight color and then a wash. I may get ambitious and pick out details with another color (maybe green?) but we will see.

Cavern tiles all set on table:

Apply Base Coat to many pieces:

Apply Build Up to same pieces and one test piece that did not get a base coat (bottom right - straight wall with slightly darker shadows):

Thoughts?

Edit: bottom images is turned. Piece in question is top right due to this.

wait... where did you get this?! omg I've been looking for cavern type stuffs for a planned project with dwarves. I'm starting to get excited now!

Are these meant to be modular or are you building a set piece with them?

One thing I might suggest to help with your pieces, regardless of which way they go together, is as a final step, get a little flock and add a "moss" to a few walls here and there. You just do a bit of watery glue, paint it where you'd like to see moss - maybe a small trickle between stones for instance - and cover it with flock. Let it dry and there ya go, moss.

A light drybrush of edges here and there of a lighter grey for instance might not also be amiss after your initial paint job.

You could add a few bits of rubble as well, if you're going for more of a ruined look.

anyway just some thoughts!

looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

These are from the Dwarven Forge Caverns Kickstarter and are available on their site. They are meant to be modular. The Dwarvenite material is a dense, Bones-like material that is nearly indestructible. They have Dungeons and Caverns already released, with the Cities/Sewers Kickstarter fulfilling beginning January.

As for my paint job with these, I am hoping that I can get them all done before the first of the year. Wish me luck!

I like where you're going with this! I can see having another color in there would give it a pop.

What are you thinking of the GameDecor paints? When I used them on a DF set they never quite felt right to my hands. Curious what your experience is.

I don't mind them at all. They work for what they are intended. I am actually nervous that I may run out of the Build Up color, though. That being said, the Dwarven Forge paint sale going on right now just got some of my money...

Today has been less productive than yesterday but a big part of that is that I've been dealing with car situation. Tomorrow will likely yield a better result. also have a Walmart gift card that is likely to turn into a better storage solution. If others are interested I can post a link to an image of what I'm thinking.

Image of storage option that I chose is in the spoiler below. I bought two four packs to be delivered next week. The drawers are each around 2.5" deep and I plan to put them on shelves of an entertainment center in my game room to hold all of my Dwarven Forge Terrain (I have about an equal amount of the Dungeon sets as I do Caverns, plus the incoming City Builder stuff will more than double what I currently own.)

I have all of my original Game Tiles in almost that exact storage unit (different color).  Perfectly fits all the walls/floors/corners from a 3 set pledge and curved/diagnonal add-ons.  I have all of the various other bits in some other small containers.  I haven't picked up another for Caverns yet, as I didn't think it would work as well given how irregular the caverns are.  Post some pictures after you have it all organized!

Nice start with the paint job.  It's a big task.  Don't burn yourself out by rushing for a deadline or you'll be so sick of these you'll look at your upcoming Cities tiles with disgust. :;):   I finished my game tiles, but have yet to start on my Caverns.  At this point, I think I'm going to wait for Cities and paint those first, as they look a lot more interesting.

Also, I think the straight wall piece where you skipped the base coat looks just fine.

I ordered the storage online, so it won't be here until next week. I am hoping to get things painted and organized in preparation of my large influx of tiles with the KS3 stuff (although, I won't complain if I get lucky and shipped in the early batch this week). The funny thing is that in-store pick-up was going to take more than an extra week on top of having it shipped to me.

Also, I ordered a decent amount of the Dwarven forge paint (all but the lava colors and black/white) and plan to use it on the cities stuff. Some of those don't arrive until March, so I will be easing into painting it all.
