50065: Rex, Dark Future Hero

This is Reaper's 50065: Rex, Dark Future Hero by Tim Prow (there's also a Bones version).

 

As part of my year-end cleaning up of half-done minis, he's a simple tabletop job (given when I started him I cannot lay any claim to this being a fast job).

Black's a hard color to shade.

 

Only thing I can think of would be a dark, dark Prussian blue, like a nightmare black, for the barrel, for bluing.

I don't know if it's still in the MSP line or not but the metallic Gunmetal Blue (IIRC) is perfect for gun barrels. (Go figure :) ) And yeah, shading black leather is pain to get right. Overall a good piece that'll look good at table top distance. The camera is harsh on our little friends.

I've painted other black leathers that I think came out better, that's for sure. At any rate, he looks acceptable on the table, and that was part of the point of digging through and finishing my backlog anyhow.

As I have often said, "done" has a quality all in its own.

(I am kind of pleased with how the face came out, to be honest. I was aiming for that sort of pink-faced redhead look. I think without being blatant or overly linear I may have managed beard stubble. And implied frown lines between invisible redhead brows. And that tiny pursed mouth. The clothes are, however, desultory. Ah, well.)
