Gen Con 2016

Recommended Posts

Gen Con Badges go up today and Hotel shenanigans begin on Sunday!

Who's all planning to go so far?

The wife and I will be there. (assuming hotel shenanigans can be convinced to go our way again this year.)

I got my badge and my brother got his.  I think our group is going to be 7 strong this year.  I need to secure two hotel rooms preferably at the same hotel.  Wish me luck.

Nope. ReaperCon for me this year. GenCon will have to continue to wait.

Someday I hope to go to that, but the distance and the change of date makes it difficult for now.

I'll be at Star Trek 50 in Vegas.. sigh.. there are 3 things that weekend I wanted to go to this year since I wasn't going to Pennsic War..

Oof tough choice. I am curious as to what your third option was. At any rate Star Trek 50 is probably a good choice.

Third option is the local Celtic festival..  I'll also be out of town for Origins this year (Thanks SCA 50 year).. so there's really no gaming cons for me this summer

We're throwing a party at ST50, the rest of the time we'll just be on vacation...

I have been going regularly for 4 or 5 years in a row. This year I'm a bit on the fence about the whole thing.

We'll see.

Nope.

If they prove this year that a person can actually get in and get a downtown room without too much bovine feces, then maybe for next year.

But after all the malarkey that friends of mine have faced trying to secure a room, and the stupendous levels of price gouging involved in trying to secure an off-block room? No way, Jose. I'll contemplate Origins and Reapercon, but Gencon is off the list until the housing situation is no longer intolerable - or some gaming company wants me to rep for them, and is willing to comp a dealer's badge and a bed in a hotel.

Downtown rooms will continue to be hard to get: GenCon has gotten popular enough that demand for downtown rooms far outstrips supply.  The hotels are charging corresponding prices: what the market will bear.  Yay capitalism.  ::P:

I'll be there again this year, but I'm not looking forward to the housing stress.  I'll be teaching my "Beginning Painter's Toolkit" and "Step by Step Beginning Painting" classes again.

GenCon has gotten more crowded than I would like, and fewer of my painting friends will be there.  But, GenCon is also the only time that I get to see my best friends from college, so I'm still happy to go.

Gotta say, that since downtown hotels charge you per day as much or more as it does to park at a structure, we found it to be easier to get a room away from downtown last year. Granted, we are getting old enough that once we are tired and done for the day, we rather go back to the hotel and rest and sleep and not stay up all night playing more games.

Amazing Hawaii Comic Con looms, as well...because I can't get a plane ticket in time for Gen Con.

Woohoo! It's helpful to be a posse of 4. My brother drew an early time, so we have a room at the JW Marriot. Now to sign up to run another miniatures game, since I'm close. ::):

Got our hotel. 2 blocks away from the center. Same hotel as last year which we liked very much. Only 3 of our group were able to get together to try for the hotel, but my brother in law got in at 15 minutes and was able to make the reservation no problem. my time would have been 1 hour and my wife's time would have been 2 hours so it worked out. Definitely fewer issues this year than last. I will be doing my wednsday night Serpintine lobby painting if anyone wishes to join again this year.

So finally got around to taking my pictures of my minis from Gencon. I took a bronze for Rumscratch.

I was fairly happy with his little beach there, even if the water doesn't show well on camera.

My elf sailor was also entered, but not judged, since they only judge one of your entries per catagory.

He doesn't look very friendly. He was supposed to though.

I did a Wyrd miniatures speed paint of the Immolated Rhino.

I didn't know anything about this guy other than it was a rhino. Didn't even know the name until just now, so I made it pink. I made it very very pink.
wish I could have come up with something to do with the cracks in his skin. I just kind of ignored them.

this guy is a deep cuts guard. I did him up in a color theory class.

I don't think he turned out too bad considering the size of the brush I used on him.

I'll probably touch him up eventually.
      Questions, comments, concerns?
I also took a miniature photography class and as side effect, learned what a few of the icons on my phones camera do.

Huh usually I put one of these up sooner than this. Just been busy I guess.
      Who's all going?
How did you fair in the hotel lottery?

       So Sunday was event registration.
Did you get into the events you wanted?

My group did fairly well at the hotel thing this year even though we had to split the group this year. both hotels are fairly close.
I got into most of the events I wanted. had some issues with the priority system preventing me from getting into events because it conflicted with another event that I would only be going to if I hadn't gotten into an earlier time. Yet some how it did allow me to sign up for 2 Speed paints that conflicted with other events that I got into. (and I only realized one before paying)
Also I just a bit ago remembered that I wanted to do a Frostgrave event but they are all sold out already.

I haven't posted anything in a while now, but I have been painting quite a bit. Unfortunately I just haven't been able to get good pictures lately. I think it might be because I finished my hobby room now take pictures downstairs in the basement with less natural light. Sadly It means I had to abandon my dungeon setting for pictures and go to regular photo back grounds, But at least I now have a set up that works for taking pictures now. So I'll be playing catch up for  little while with posting some things I've gotten done lately.

So With out further ado, this was my Gencon MHE contest entry for this year, a Noh Empire squad. I actually got a bronze this year even though my group base was still really rough. I was super happy about that

Bronze! Like I said my group base was really rough and unfinished, but I don't think it counted against me since it was sort of optional anyway.

Marikan To was my first major attempt at lining. Mostly on her wraps and on her quiver. I think her skin needed more highlighting but I'm not really sure how to highlight smooth skin yet.

The Beastmaster I think turned out pretty good. I was very happy with the faces on his armor. His skin looks like it could use a touch more shade, but otherwise I'm happy.

The Hounds of Nozuki were a bit tricky since their fur had no detail I had to try and figure out how to make it look interesting (I had the same issue with Marikan To's hair). I think they turned out ok. I was getting a little burned out on the bases by the time I got to these guys.

Marikan To's bird companion. His base took the longest and he was just about the last figure I finished since I wasn't entirely sure how and where I wanted his coloration.
Thanks for looking. Let me no if you have any comments, critiques or advice for next time. I'll post some other stuff I've finished tomorrow.
