Pets in Space

Recommended Posts

So I was thinking of this more and more for a diorama I'm planning.

What kind of pet would you imagine someone having on their ship? Additionally what kind of pet would you want on your ship? And why.

Your ship being the one you own. Think Firefly, Han Solo, etc.

Lastly, links to miniatures that correspond  / pictures would be cool too. :)

A Beagle.

Besides the adorable factor of Beagles, any reason why?
The only other pet I can think of from Star Trek was Tribbles...

...and I hear Beagles are chill with confined spaces.

I would want a better ship than Captain Archer's...

...USS New Orleans, for reasons.

Hmm.  Maybe space is the proper place to have a shoulder-dragon.  Bio-engineered, of course, but importantly it addresses that little problem wherein fantasy dragons are typically depicted without a wingspan that could realistically support their frames.  Well, in zero G, that's no longer an issue!  ;)

Traditionally, cats were kept aboard ships. To help keep the rodent population down. While obsolete on a space ship (then again who knows in the future, maybe there are space rats!) I think cats would be very adaptive to living in space.

Of course, if I was a space pirate it would have to be a parrot! :)

Someone custom-made this one.  Doesn't look like it would be too difficult to sculpt one, and it was hilarious in the movie.

Are we talking weightless or artificial gravity?  If it's weightless you'd have to have something with wings.  Trouble is, things with wings are rather difficult to housebreak, and are evil-minded buggers to a feather.

I would want a Sphinxian Treecat.

Not a pet though, since they are sentient themselves....

(See the Honor Harrington Novels by David Weber)

Where men go, rats follow....

The funny thing is that in many Sci-fi stories I have read, Ferrets are kept as ratters on star ships....

I would rather have a cat than a ferret....

@Froggy - I would say either way. Mostly gravity. But to be honest, I would like to hear both sides of the "argument" so to speak.

@knarthex - It's the future. You can pretty much define it the way you want just give a reason why that sounds good and it works.

A big lazy boa constrictor. Just sort of lounges on warm consoles and occasionally eats vermin.

Alternatively some sort of engineered jelly fish thing might be good in micro gravity.

I am greatly amused by the mental image of a space-ferret.  However, I dread the thought of all the things it would chew its way through, and anything that remotely resembles a CORNER in the ship's interior.

A space-cat sounds better to a certain extent.  Space-kitty-litter provides some extraordinary engineering challenges.  I suspect the solution requires centrifugal force, and runs the risk of an extremely dizzy cat who isn't capable of actually entering/leaving the litter box without assistance (and some trauma).  I'm probably spending too much thought on the issue, but I'm sure it *would* become a problem.

Maybe the best solution is a space-fish, in its own little space-aquarium, maintained by automated mechanisms with as little human interaction as possible ... but then that calls into question just how one distinguishes between "pet" and the typical sorts of things that end up as space lab experiments.

EDIT: Really, I think my answer to this would depend greatly upon whether or not, in our theoretical spaceship, we have artificial gravity.  :)

Also, when I read the title of this thread, I mentally sound it out as "Pets ... in ... Spaaaaaaace!"

I foresee some AWESOME visual effects, almost like a living lava lamp.  But I also fear getting a face full of tentacles and/or stingers.  :)

A cat, they sleep most of the time and are lazy so it would work out well.

Also Ripley had a cat on her space ship :)

I like the idea of a cat. Maybe a cybornetic one too. It watches over the ship and when you your away from the ship, if someone unknown comes aboard, It transmit a live stream. Muahaha.

If you're a Ice Pirate you'll need the cat to hunt space herpes.

A pair of speed painted 3d printed robots I completed during my 4th of July Paint Binge.  I found the GW Contrast paints to be very good at covering large smooth surfaces easily.  The red one was from a KS project by EC3D. (and yes, it's missing an arm) I am not sure where my husband found the other one, but maybe Thingaverse.

      Story
Welcome to our newest Kickstarter! You'll notice this one is a little different. In this Kickstarter we are offering the STL Files of some of our classic models for you to print on your home 3D printers. These files, created and designed by John Bear Ross, offer tons of combinations and entrance into an amazing realm of sci-fi models. These models come scaled in 15mm AND 28mm!
Now, keep in mind, these are for personal use, not for commercial or resale. We own the copyrights and designs but for the sake of this Kickstarter, we are allowing the files to go to you, our loyal supporters.
So why are we doing this Kickstarter?
Short answer…We are raising funds to increase our in-house printing capabilities. This will allow us to develop more detailed models, models in larger scales, and bring out even more product lines. Rebel Minis is growing and we want you guys to be part of it.
But we can’t do it without you, so please consider pledging, and spreading the word!
      Thank you,
      Mike and JBR
      The Reward
We have only one. ALL the files listed to be available for one pledged amount.  You get the files to everything you see scaled in both 15mm and 28mm.
Your pledge of $40 gets the whole kit n’ caboodle.  Once again, this is for PERSONAL USE! You do not have permission to distribute, copy or sell the files. *C'mon man, you know that ain’t cool!*
      Stretch Goals
If we reach our goals, we will unlock stretch goals. These files will be added to the reward and download at the same time.
      Delivery
After the Kickstarter ends, and if it is successful, you will get a survey to confirm your email. Later, when they are ready, we will email you the links for download.
      The Files
Look at all these Glorious Files, they can be yours!
Can I print the weapons and vehicles on FDM and Resin Printers?
Yes, everything should be printable on both types of printers found in common use. Most of our prints are optimized for desktop resin printers like the Anycubic Photon or the Elegoo Mars, but FDM should be able to support most builds. If we encounter files that are too large for resin printers, we will happily go back and supply sliced and optimized files to be printed in smaller chunks
