RIP Edgar Mitchell

Yet another name to add to the list.  Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, died this morning at age 85 in Southern Florida.

Oddly enough, I find that wistful and sad, but not the gut punch so many recent deaths have been.

 

People dying in their eighties is mournful and a loss but it doesn't seem to be in the same way a cohort of people dying in their sixties is.

 

I am sorry for his loss.

I am glad for his life; he's responsible for one of my favorite quotes about space exploration (slightly redacted due to a touch of rough language):

 

"You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a [REDACTED]'."
