03168 Vanja, Fire Giant Queen of Doom!

Couple years old, but this was my first large size mini I painted. Had a lot of fun with it. I also imagined fire giants as having coal black skin, and I wanted to do something to make the face pop a bit because of how dark it was so I did some war paint type thing. Looking back now, there are a few things I'd like to redo on her. I've found that is a danger of taking pics of older minis, haha.

I love this sculpt and what you did with it!

I have it sitting on my desk staring back at me waiting for some pigment.  I just can't bring myself to tackle it yet, as it is going to be for my wife.  I need to get some more practice in before I attempt it.

You have done a marvelous job, however!

      Hello again my Reaperdoodles!

here is the second one I finished just yesterday, a female giant from the Arcana Unearthed line that Iron Wind Metals puts out, sculpted by John Winter.

I've always liked this figure since the first time I saw her, probably a decade ago, but finally got around to painting her.  Hardest part as usual was to try to choose the colors, but hopefully the palette is pleasant enough.

I don't know anything about the Arcana Unearthed game or system, but she's listed as a giant, which looking back into the early nineties, she was probably a pretty large figure, but when I compare to her modern Reaper figures, she is really pretty much the same size.  I have this photo as a comparison.

Technically this is a WIP since the base is unfinished, but the figure is done-ish..

This is my first post here on the forums, but I've been a fan of Reaper for a while now.  I've also been painting a while, but only got serious about learning in the last couple years.  I've been working at tabletop ready level until I set my sights on these two frost giants.  The detail is amazing in these models, so I felt like I had to throw myself into it and produce the best paint job I could.  These are the very first pieces I've ever felt were worth considering entering into a competition of any sort.  They are currently my best work, and yet I know that I have a long way to go with much to learn.  Together they took 5 days to complete, working about 6-8 hours each day while I recover from shoulder surgery.

      Some quick notes:
      1. The bases are what came with the minis, please disregard them, I plan on following up in this post with custom bases for each of them.
      2. The Winter Wolf that belongs to the one with the spear is not done yet.  He'll be forthcoming in time.
      3. Yes, I modded the spear.  I cut off the head and used a spare brush protector tube to connect it to a wood dowel.  I used a stain marker on the wood dowel and painted the spear head and tube.  This meant that I had to drill out her hand.  It was a bit dicey, but it turned out well, I think.

      Thanks,

From the first Bones kickstarter, or rather, a purchase I made soon after since I did not add on the "Fire Giant Warriors" subset.
As I have written earlier, I am grinding through getting the older versions of the Giants painted, as the newer versions are both 1) better detailed, and 2) a lot larger. The idea is that if I do not get the older ones done before I start the newer versions, they will never be touched again. Which would be a shame, really.
This is the only old version Fire Giant I have, as the ones from Bones 3 and out are the new size and design.

I went with red skin and firey hair and beard.
The red is new Citadel Screamer Pink, Wazdakka Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet. The steel is Scalecolor Black Metal, Army Painter Plate Mail Metal and Army Painter Shining Silver. The gold is Vallejo Model Color Brass.

...and Char Donaye is only one wicket away from retaining the Ashes...

Oh that Werner, he's done it again! Let me introduce you to Vanja, the Fire Giant Queen - original size. She's a great size for an Ogre and as a Player Character. Bones once again! Great level of detail allows so much to be done to bring life to the face. Her armor reminds me of my SCA rig.

Autumn hue, same palette as the Huge variation posted earlier. Underpainting/sketching used before paint. Plus! Pushed contrast. (Something a little bird taught me.)

      Gonna paint another.

      Enjoy.
