D&D NPC: D'Khul, Bathalian (#02568)

I wanted to have an Illithid for gaming and got me D'Khul.

To create a "fishy" look on his skin, I painted it in pale violet metallics, shaded blueish and highlighted towards silver, then applied matt varnish.

I was quite happy with the result and got a bit carried away when also doing the staff in metallics and the hood and hem with violet-green iridescent pigments. The photo is not so brilliant, one will have to imagine it shimmering under different light directions.

What do you think of the basic idea? Should illithids look like that or should they rather come with a dark-and-simple scheme?

I think the flesh came out great.  Definitely a great interpretation, I agree it doesn't need to be the stereotypical flat dark purple.

 

Have to echo the others as well, the color choices for the clothing is *excellent*.  The contrast from the magenta robe to the purpy blue cloak is stellar.  Wonderful job, this is a beautiful mini!

I have this mini in the queue and you've given me a lot of idea for it. Your choice of colours is amazing and couldn't be more appropriate for a aberration of this caliber. Very well done, definitely Polychromus caliber.

Mmmm... I'm for muted skin tones, akin to octopi, that said I picked up the same mini and the iridescence of the robe strikes a cord.

I'm using Vallejo colors. Except for the skin, I basecoated it with Scale75 "Amethyst Alchemy".

I got the iridescent pigments in an assortment box from a local (germany) pigments dealer. I only found it in the german version of their shop:

I've looked up the 2 colors from the box I used on D'Khul:

50065 Pyrisma green

50067 Pyrisma violet

 

These don't do the pearly multicolor flip-flop thing so much but restrict the reflected light so a single narrow color spectrum.

 

The nice thing about iridescent colors is that they work quite well even under dim or yellowish light, where a normal flat color within the blue range would normally lose a lot of vibrance. Iridescent pigments are not so good for nailing a very specific tone but when it comes to "anything" blue, violet, green etc. they'll simply reflect the whole tone range existing in the light source's color spectrum whilst cancelling the rest totally (if underpainted black), so a blue robe would still appear blue in your dungeon master's candle-lit hobby room.
