My Frostgrave Illusionist's Warband

     Last week, I posted photos to "Show Off" of the Anhurian Spearman that I had recently completed painting for use with the game Frostgrave (http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/67363-yet-another-anhurian-spearman-77359-bones/ ); and forumite Pippin put in a request for me to please post photos of one of my completed Warbands for Frostgrave.  

    I had been playing the game so far with a mix of figures specifically painted up for Frostgrave with snow bases, and existing figures in my collection that were on regular grassed bases. I had been busily painting figures for Frostgrave, but had been working on several warbands in parallel, and hadn't actually completed a full one.   Since our group had started its Frostgrave campaign last month, I had been making a concentrated effort to finish my main Illusionist warband that I am using for the campaign, and completed the final figure this past weekend.  I sat down today and took some shots of the complete group.

 

    (Note: Before the sharp-eyed Forstgrave players on the forum cry foul at there being 11 figures, after the first campaign game my group settled in an old inn, allowing them to add an extra figure to the warband)

 

"What strange magic is this?", said the wizard Kodak, as the man set up the odd optical device before the group.  "It is a machine for the making of a permanent image," said the man. "Like a painting, but with more realism and much quicker."

"I'd like to see such magic!" said the curious Illusionist.

OUTSTANDING! The War Band is brimming with character AND BEAUTIFULLY painted & based. They would look FINE in Mordheim also. VERY WELL DONE!

Love it!  Great looking group.  I notice you picked the iconic witch, Feiya (from Pathfinder), as your apprentice.  She's my absolute favorite iconic and I think that figure is excellent (though my Bones version of her immediately became my daughter's new mini).

I like how the more "frontline" crew has more of a brown theme going and the characters who might avoid melee have more vibrant colors.  I always tend to think of warbands in some sort of common color theme, but given that your wizard just hires on those he can find to fill the roles, it does make better sense that they are in unique colors and costumes.

Cherowyn and Sister Elessa are my favorites paint-job-wise.

I'm glad you liked them!

I tried to give their outfits some thought...and like you said, I assumed the wizard hired who he could and didn't necessarily bother making matching clothes a requirement. I assumed the thugs are poorer types, so have more plain rustic clothes with just a hint of color here and there. The thieves, by nature of their profession choose dark and drab clothing that blends in with the shadows,though not necessarily of a cheap cloth or design, and the more heroic types are assumed to have more wealth and better opportunity to choose clothing that suits their personal tastes, and ego to some extent.

I have seen folks who color code their warbands, and I think that is a great idea if you plan to do a lot of demo or convention games where the players might not necessarily easily remember which figures are theirs in the middle of the battle. It provides a good visual clue.

Maybe the poorer guys could be provided a ribbon or corsage with a colour to show to which warband they belong?

That way the Wizard might not blow up his own forces when there is a melee.
