wdmartin
Been working on this one for a couple of weeks. Front view linked for nudity Side view linked for nudity, just in case, it's kinda hard to tell if the angle qualifies or not. This is the pewter version, though I don't think there's any other. The coloration was inspired by the mediterranean rainbow wrasse. I didn't attempt to duplicate the pattern from those fish, but I liked the contrast of vivid teal and orange. The teal was Reaper Spruce Green with some Sun Yellow added to punch it up towards green. The orange is a 1:1 mixture of Fireball Orange and Fair skin. I am pretty pleased with the eyes and face. The base kicked my butt. This was the first time I tried using Golden Pumice Gel for a sand base, and I have to say, the results are not as impressive as I'd hoped. Particularly in the photo it came out looking lumpy and un-sand-like. And the faint blue shadows I attempted to put in around the rocks just look like a bit of brush-on sealer that didn't dry correctly. Also now that I photograph it, I notice some bits where paint slopped over the edges. I'll have to go touch those up. At least the purple brain coral came out well, and the seaweed (moss from Michaels) also works well. I'm glad I got this done, because it's due to be used in-game in ... exactly 12 hours from now. Overall, I'm reasonably pleased with the mini, less so with my photography. It's much nicer in hand than it is on screen. Erifnogard
Looks amazing! Love her expression and colors. Re: the sand. Why didn't you just use sand? Mixed with school glue (Elmer's) it is the most effective thing to model itself.
wdmartin
Basically, I didn't want to worry about it coming off. Also I don't have any.
Erifnogard
Basically, I didn't want to worry about it coming off. Also I don't have any. If you mix the sand with uncut white glue, it ain't coming off. Trust me. 50lb. bag of 'Play Sand' at Lowe's is $3. This is not to say your base looks bad, it looks great! Just if you want to do sand in future with minimal effort, it's hard to beat actual sand with white glue.

I got a 1lb bag out of a craft shop, intended for use with the colored sand bottles. Rough sand starts to look like gravel. The base kicked my butt. Glitterwolf
She looks great! About the sand, PVA and sand mixed, and then later spray a little antishine varnish on it, it won't come off then. Good Work!
BLZeebub
I love her expression. The scales and fins look good too. Even her hair and skin are smooth. Might try to knock the sheen off her though--I know she's wet, but only things on land look "wet"--underwater the light doesn't reflect off of objects so much as there's no thin layer of water on them. ;)
wdmartin
I agree about the sheen -- I wasn't trying for that. The brush-on sealer just decided to be shinier than usual this time. I'll hit her with some Dullcote later.
Sanael
She looks nice! I'm sorry the pumice didn't work out for you...I, too, wonder what grain of pumice you have. I use Liquitex (and have used Vallejo in the past) and love it. It comes out beautifully, and I use it for dirt, sand and snow. I really love the green/orange combo...I will have to use it on something in the future. edit to add: I do also use sand+PVA, but typically only when I'm looking for a very dry, desert-type terrain. I find the pumice paste is much easier to deal with (and somewhat sculptable) for fine textures. Edited March 5, 2016 by Sanael
wdmartin
I have both fine and coarse pumice gel, and mixed them at about 50/50 for the sand.

Kheprera
Actually, with the coloring and the shine, she looks like a retro porcelain figurine. Very lovely.
tiniest rhombus
She's gorgeous. I love the expression on her face. The colors you've chosen work beautifully together. There's nothing like looking to nature for inspiration. The base is great, I think the sand looks fine, like it's wet.
