Mousekillers Hungry Giant

Recommended Posts

I started this guy quite some time ago, and have never really been happy with how he is turning out. I didn't do a lot to him this week, but I went back through and started to re-evaluate the skin, adding some more tones and highlights to it. In addition, I blackened out some tattoos that I think will be appropriate. Probably need one more on his upper back as well. Please be very critical with him... areas I am particularly not happy with are the face, the scales on his arm, and a few other spots.

So...what do you not like about the face?  It is sort of hard to tell what if anything may be wrong since there are no close ups.  Not enough highlights? Too many highlights?  Don't like the skin tone?  It is just ugly and hard for you to look at?

The scales on the arm I would ask the same questions of, color, highlights, shadows, texture?

I agree with xherman on the sculpt btw.

So, here is the update on the Giant. What have I done... washed the skin, I think the skin still bothers me. Not blended well enough I think. Also, gave the scales a wash... I think what I want to do with them is add a few browner ones into the green to give it some variation. Also, added the beginnings of rust to the chain. Added some yellow to the two humans, I think I like how that came out. Honestly, what I really need to do is just concentrate on him in quadrants and just get him done already!!!

@Xherman: He is definitely a giant (no pun) pain to paint, but I think he will look well enough once we get him on the table.

chaoshead: I think it comes down to the skin tone... because the model is smooth plastic and has such vast areas of open skin, the blends have to be perfect and mine are not on this guy. At least from what I see, the highest highlights come along just too stark... Going to give it one more go. Also, I added the tattoos to help break up the areas a little, so that should help. Same on the arm, just not enough variation.

You can blend such large areas of skintone by making a glaze of the midtone.

A Glaze is even thinner than a wash and is almost translucent.

It will blend the colours together.

Should some highlights get too dull, you can always pick those out again.

Overall I think it is a pretty darned good paint job.

The only place I see starkness in the highlighting of the skin is on the backs of the legs and on his buttocks.

There is a weird line on his left arm between his elbow and his armband, both on the front and back.  The one on the back is a straight dark line while the one on the front looks more like a patch that may have been missed by the wash?

Good job all around though.

HUNGRY GIANT

I concentrated on the arm with the stone this time around. After taking the pictures, I think the stone needs more work, some more washes to mix more color into them maybe. I like the skin tone on the arm now, fairly happy with it. Will have to spend some time on the other skin parts to get it just right, particularly the areas that chaoshead pointed out (thank you). Worked up the green scales a little more, I think they are good now? He really is close to being done, just so much detail on him that I don't want to rush it.

@Chaoshead: I see exactly where you mean, I will spend some time fixing this. Thank you!

@Xherman: Thanks! I will try to do just that!

Well, time to actually finish this guy.  This has been a project on the table for many years.  I have never quite been happy with the skin.  Going back in and have applied some pink to tone down some of the washes I have applied over the years, then I am going to systematically work my way through him to make sure every piece gets the attention it deserves.  It is going to get done this month, hold me to it.

The Hungry Giant

Having been "rescued" from a travelling Empire circus, Skarsnik has put this lumbering brute to use in many battles. When not marching to war, the Hungry Giant resides in a deep hole located within Skarsniks own throne room. The giant is kept well fed, as Skarsnik often amuses himself by throwing the captured enemy, random animals, and even a gobbo or two that displease him into the hole.
