Several factors are in play here.

First is the license. We sold CAV 100% to Talon Games, and now it is a licensed range, similar to Pathfinder and Savage Worlds. As such, we can make no product range decisions without the permission of our licensor. Talon Games has the final authority over the offered material.

Second is the costs to Reaper of that portion of the license. The metal miniatures on-shelf value was well over $10,000 in simply metal weight, not to mention the value of the storage areas for the metal, the packaged product, and the molds - with over 150 items averaging 4 parts each, this was a significant chunk of real estate. sales for metal CAV over the last 24 months were less than half of the value of the inventory on hand, meaning we could choose to not produce another CAV part for approximately 4 more years and the odds are good we wouldn't run out. That's an extravagant amount of inventory.

Third is Talon Games's plan to introduce CAV models to plastic. I do not have myself (because I am not on the board of Talon Games) timelines, but I understand that eventually the plan is to adapt all models which have rules, although I freely admit exceptions may exist (infantry?).

When combined, these factors led to a discussion in which Reaper was asked to remove the metal product, and tasked with reducing our storage and inventory costs of this product, which our licensor pays a portion of.

Thank you for the clarification, Bryan.

I would then like to repeat my question for CAVBoss from the KS thread. Does this mean the Spider, Scorpion, Recluse, Badger, Baron, Czar, Hedgehog, Dictator '60/A, Starhawk V, and Vanquisher OEM/A are permanently out of production?

Thanks for the heads-up, Bryan...that explains why they're gone gone, rather than in the 'present for historical purposes' pile.  I was hoping for the scenario of discontinuing the metals when the plastics hit the store, but I can't exactly fault you for having that much material dying on the shelves.  Still, it's a shame...since it's a pretty safe assumption now that there are models in-game that simply can't be purchased (and as Vil fears, some are gone for good).  I imagine a lot of that low volume was the pricing fiasco...big chunks of metal aren't cheap and we as forumites know that better than anyone, but close to $20 for a pair of scaled-down planes was just outrageous...as much as I wanted some of those models, I simply couldn't justify that kind of cost.

Will be kind of annoying if I have to wait 5+ years for some of that stuff to be available again (slowly chipping away at the model list in plastic, over successive kickstarter), but such is life.

In metal yes. That's not to say they wont see life in the future as Bones model.

Glad I still have my Starhawk's in metal. :) Could never give up those beautiful beasts, even without the game I'll have a use for them. lol

The Starhawk V is the first CAV I ever bought, and I still have it - easily one of my favorite models!  I'd mention that I've always thought that the missile launcher looked a bit at odds with the rest of the design (same goes for the Talon) and the cockpit is a bit small, but I love it all the same.

Yep, Starhawk's were phenomenal. Mine will be getting used again 'soon' now that there's been work done to consolidate and update the CAV 2 rules, I may pull my models out of mothballs and play again. :)
