Brown liner by the bucket?

It's well known the brown liner is a good "base" coat on bones.  It makes the details pop and paint adhere better.

 

But looking at the terrain from DDS2, then the 1/2oz bottle of brown liner, i'm pretty certain that my air brush is going to need more than a 1/2oz.

 

So, if it'd be economical to produce, I'd like to go on the record as someone who'd buy a larger size bottle of the brown liner.  4oz?  8oz?

This was brought up numerous times in the bones KS 3 thread and a lot of us chirped in that we wanted it as a stretch goal and/or a product to have in the future, I'm pretty sure Bryan is well aware of it and has passed it on to the other powers that be.

The information that larger sizes might be desired has been heard, no plan exists to implement that.

 

I believe it is approx $900 per gallon, if I remember correctly from someone who asked to paint their house with MSPs.

I think I used maybe 1/2 a bottle of Grey Liner when I I did my DDS2....

But if they did a proper job of removing mold lines and such, maybe a gallon of liquid green for filling small cracks, a few pounds of Greenstuff to fill the bigger gaps, and a bucketload of #4 brushes, and I'd imagine that the result would be pretty decent...

There's no way I can imagine Reaper making just one paint/liner/whatever available in a 'non-standard'(for them) bottle size.

Unless there's a whole set of paints and stuff that it would make sense to package in that size, it'll never happen.

 

And how many here would be willing to buy triads of liners in large bottle sizes?

 

Maybe the 'Add on' Triads could be 'supersized', (white and black primers, sealer, flow improver and drying retarder), but they're really all you'd 'need' in larger sizes, and really, the drying retarder and the flow improver aren't high-volume consumables, either, so that leaves us with 4 liquids:

White Primer, Black Primer, Sealer, Brown Liner.

That's not all that many liquids for a separate set of bottles. 

 

I already get 60ml White/Grey/Black primers from Vallejo, and those I can order here in Norway, so I get them in 2 days.(I have yet to find anyone reselling Reaper Paints here, unfortunately. All my Reaper Paints have come directly from the source) Others have their own preference for Primer and varnishes, also. A certain Dullcote spray comes to mind. 

 

So, a costly setup on one side, and a limited market on the other side... I can understand that Reaper isn't going to commit to something like this.

 

We'll just have to buy more than one bottle at a time, I guess.

If purchased in 1/2 oz. bottles at full retail price, MSP would be $842.24 per gallon.

 

But let's look at several things, here:

• "By the bucket" is hyperbole. What people really want is larger bottles in the 2 oz. to 8 oz. range. (AFAICT, anyway.)
• That per gallon price includes 256 1/2 oz. bottles, that run $0.34 ea. in singles. (US Plastics price for single bottles.) Reaper buys in bulk for resale, but I suspect that the bulk price isn't all that much lower than the single price. For the sake of argument, I'll go with $0.25/bottle.
• 2 oz. (30ml) bottles run pretty nearly exactly twice the price.
• Reaper sells into three-tier distribution. Standard terms for sales to distributors are 50/10/10, which is a 59.5% discount from retail. This often becomes a 60% discount, since distributors will take the "prompt payment" discounts regardless of how long they take to pay. And Reaper needs to make money at that price (40% of retail).
• Because of the above, competently run companies, and Reaper's longevity argues that it is competently run, typically set their retail prices at 5-10 times the total cost of production. Using the higher number, that would mean that the total cost of production for a $3.29 bottle of paint would be $0.658. (I suspect lower, but I'm being conservative here.)
• I don't know the labor cost of filling bottles of paint, but I'll assume something like 200 bottles per hour (3/minute plus an averaged paint color changeover) and $16/hr. You also need to add in the cost of printing and applying labels; let's call it $0.10 per bottle. This is a WAG, btw, and could vary by 100% in either direction pretty easily.

Given those assumptions, cost for the paint in a 1/2 oz. bottle would run no more than $0.31. (I suspect it's closer to $0.20 and might be quite a lot lower than that, but remember I'm being conservative.)

 

Now let's extrapolate this to a 60ml bottle:

• Cost of filling would stay almost exactly the same ($0.10/bottle).
• Cost of bottles doubles (we'll call it $0.50, using the same discount)
• Cost of paint goes to $1.24

Total cost of production per bottle would be $1.84. Using the same markup, the cost of a 2 oz. bottle would run $9.20.

 

As a check, compare to Golden Fluid Acrylics 4 oz. bottles, which run $12.87 - $19.03 at Blick. (The higher prices are for paints using especially expensive pigments.) Seems reasonably close to me.

 

Note that this is using conservative numbers in all cases. If the labor and miscellaneous cost is higher, the paint cost goes down. If the bottle cost is higher, the paint cost goes down. If Reaper's markup is higher, the cost goes way down. And larger bottles still would have yet lower price per volume.

 

The level of demand might be low enough that it would not make business sense for Reaper to sell a larger bottle, but citing $900/gallon is not reasonable.

Actually, double-size bottles doesn't cost twice as much.

 

One example; I bought a 100pack of 15ml bottles(with 'child-proof' caps) from china, which translates to $0.21/each. But a 100pack of 30ml costs $27.49 from the same seller. Granted, these aren't the same quality as Reaper's bottles, but it still shows the fact that machine-time is a factor of the price, and these bottles take about the same time to produce independent of size. Also, some parts such as the cap and the removable tip is the same so have the same cost no matter the size of the bottle. 

Whether or not Reaper should use the same caps for a larger bottle is another issue, really.

 

With Reaper's massive array of goods, I hate to think about their warehousing costs and depreciation losses, which must all be covered somehow.

(My sister runs a small online store selling beads, tools and related stuff. Her budgeted expenses to handle goods containing nickel alone is kind of frightening.)

True, but I was referring to 60ml bottles, which are not double-size, but rather quadruple-size, and using prices from the same US Plastics site.

 

 

And I agree about the warehousing and SKU-creep costs. As I said, it might not make business sense to do larger bottles, but $900/gallon ain't the reason.

On the topic at hand, I've seen that GW has put out bigger paint pots of their more popular washes/shades. Like Nuln Oil, I actually have a big one of these sitting on my desk and it's very useful stuff. Going to have to order some more brown liner myself pretty soon as I'm down to 1 1/4 bottles and like to always have one full one in reserve.

Hey, I'm just happy when it's in stock.  Have to buy more soon.  If Reaper ever discontinues it, I may literally just up and die.
