OneBoot is Crazy Too! Kaladrax in 7 Days! WIP

All done? Okay, so, being not entirely sane myself, I've decided to give it a go. I will be following the same rules buglips followed in his challenge, namely:

 

1) No using a brush larger than a standard Size 0 (no getting around it by using, say, a size 0 brush meant for house painting, for example)

2) I will work on Kaladrax for no more than 168 consecutive hours (7 full days)

3) The only prep time allowed before the timer starts is boiling and cleaning to remove casting residue. Removing (or not) mold lines is part of the challenge!

4) When I begin, I will post a picture of Kaladrax with my phone displaying the date and time (I don't get the newspaper)

 

...That's it, really. Pretty simple. I will endeavor to make semi-regular updates, but when I get deep into PaintingLand, I can lose track of time. I will, however, be very good about taking awful WIP pictures as I go, then at least doing a batch picture post each day. I've timed this so Mr. Boot is gone at a work conference about half of the 7 days, so I will have a little more free time than usual.

 

So! Feel free to come along for the ride. I can't promise to be on here super often (or maybe I will be, who knows), but I can promise that the trip will at least be entertaining.

Kaladrax, dry-fitted (remarkably well, too) and doing his best Vanna White impression, showing off the brush size I will be using.

 

 

Today is prep day, for tomorrow, I paint!

 

He's already been boiled back into position, but given that he's been handled a fair amount since then, I'll be giving him a good scrub-down before I get started. I'm also going back over buglips' thread and making a plan of attack.

 

Here's an extremely rough estimate of how I'll be tackling this:

 

1) Brown Liner ALL THE THINGS. I'll do the base first, then Kally, so that it will have time to dry fully before I start working on it.

2) Have fun using several different stone-ish colored paints to drybrush the heck out of the base. I anticipate this will be my favorite part of working on this, aside from the detail work at the end (drybrushing is fun!)

3) Pick out the skulls (the locations of which are helpfully noted in buglips' thread already) with bone-colored paints (I'm so specific here guys, it's ridiculous)

4)???

 

...Now this is where I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I'm very torn between the two follow schemes:

 

A) Jungle Kaladrax, with lots of moss and vines and such. This is the easier option, but is basically just what buglips did. I also like green, so there's that too.

B) Volcanic Kaladrax, with lots of volcanic rock and bits of red and orange and yellow all over. Also, this scheme would be reflected on Kally himself, with me going for blackened bones and reddish guts/wings.

 

The second option is by FAR the more difficult of the two, and I'm not entirely certain I'd be able to pull it off in the time allotment. My biggest concern would be the bones of Kally himself; I have in my head to paint them black like obsidian, BUT I have next to no experience with highlighting/shading black, and I'm worried that it would come off as gray and will turn into a huge time-sucker as I try and fiddle with it.

Wow. Good luck to you.

 

My thoughts about black are if it goes too grey you can wash over it with a darker color. I would use some sort of brown wash if I wanted the look of gnarled scorched old bones.

I checked bristle-length from the photo, so those brushes are indeed "regulation" if you were curious.

As cool as the Volcanic Kaladrax would be, I would go for the first option.  It is faster, and you stated you have little experience highlighting/shading black.  I can't help but think that the volcanic version would be a lot of highlighting/shading black.  On the other hand, if you do choose volcanic I bet you will be a lot more comfortable with it by the end .  Good luck!

Best of luck with whichever scheme you pick! I think the deep jungle one sounds more interesting, but its not my undead dragon that's getting painted.

Speed is the key, trust your instincts to reveal the "best quickest" path.  Worry eats time, perfect is the enemy of good.  You'll know the zen when you get there, and this will push you past fatigue and doubt.

That's a good-looking brush to battle with.  If it handles as good as it looks it would be a good recommendation for The Big One.

Well, given that 24 hours ago, that particular brush looked like this:

 

 

after I had fun dry-mashing the heck out of it against my desk (for SCIENCE!), I'm inclined to agree.

 

Granted, the previous brush pic is after I gave it a good brush soap treatment, and the picture is of it wet. It no longer has a point, sure, and it has a few wayward bristles, but it is still a perfectly serviceable brush. Very promising indeed!

Hm, while that sounds intriguing, I doubt I'd be able to acquire india ink and floor polish before tomorrow. Also, I'd be hesitant to try out such a radically different technique for the first time on this challenge. It could speed things up a ton, or go horribly wrong and end up costing me the (non-existent) prize. It's an interesting idea, though, for sure!

 

Augh, I keep going back and forth! With the Jungle theme, I could do bits of green drybrushing on him to make him look mossy too, but with the Lava theme, I could make his innards and wing membranes magma. I know that either one will end up looking super cool, it's just that the realistic part of my brain is currently fighting with the artistic part, with no clear winner as of yet. I do have several hours to finish contemplating it, though.

 

Hey...actually, that even gives me enough time to do a quick test on two random Bones. Why didn't I think of that sooner?
