Converting a New Bones Female Wizard's Apprentice for Frostgrave

    For those of you who have been following along with my Frostgrave Campaign (See:Frostgrave Game Four); you'll know that in the last game my Illusionist Apprentice was killed.  I like whenever possible to actually use new figures to replace those killed, or promoted; but as I pawed through my Bones stash I became aware that I had no female wizard figures suitably attired for exploring a frozen ruined city.  Most of them wear very skimpy, drapey, outfits.  So, when I came across the Highland Heroine figure in her nice warm-looking layered outfit, I thought that perhaps she would make a good wizard's apprentice.  So, I then looked for a suitable sorceress who's staff I could borrow, and I found the Sarah, the Seeress, figure.

 

 

I washed the two figures.   Then, as I studied them, the immediate problem I found was that the Highland Heroine has very small delicate hands and I wasn't sure I would be able to drill them out to insert the staff.  So I decided to leave Sarah's hand attached to the staff, and use that to replace the Heroine's right hand, and then cut the staff in two, and glue the lower section to the Heroine's other hand.  I cut away the sword and the Heroine's right hand, and then ended up having to cut away a bit of the underside of the Heroine's left forearm to get the lower half of the staff to fit, and it still is almost as round as her clenched hand.  I used Gorilla Superglue to glue all the parts together.    I'm pleased with how the conversion turned out.

 I like that she looks like a tough-as-nails wizard who isn't afraid to use either end of her staff when the fighting gets close-quarters.

Wow!  I actually thought it would be an arm swap and I instantly started picturing how you would make that work, but the two-handed staff smashing wizard is pretty nifty!  Now I suppose you can give Sarah the Seeress a nice big sword to go with her crystal ball?

Looking forward to seeing the new apprentice all painted up, though you know I'll miss Cherowyn.

Wow!  I actually thought it would be an arm swap and I instantly started picturing how you would make that work, but the two-handed staff smashing wizard is pretty nifty!  Now I suppose you can give Sarah the Seeress a nice big sword to go with her crystal ball?

Looking forward to seeing the new apprentice all painted up, though you know I'll miss Cherowyn.

Thanks, Pippin! I don't know how a sword would look with just the crystal ball. I'm not sure what I'll do with her yet. Part of me wants to give her a baseball bat like she's hitting fly balls to some rookie dwarf in center field who need some practice. :)

 

I know you liked Cherowyn. Hopefully you'll grow to like this apprentice as well. I think Kodak is looking for someone a little tougher than Cherowyn was, who can look out for herself better. :)

One minor nit to pick---I'm not certain if it's the angle of the picture, but the bottom end of her staff ( the end on the figures left, up in the air) looks wonky; maybe trim it flat?

If it's just the angle, feel free to ignore me of course. Heck, feel free to ignore me anyway; it's your figure after all.

Yeah, it's wonky. It's interesting you mentioned it, as I've been going back and forth with myself whether to leave it be or not. One part of me says it should be flat and smooth like you suggest, but the other side wonders whether it is more realistic to be a bit worn and chipped after repeatedly being thwacked upside of various foul denizens' heads. :)

Actually, with a bit of paperclip and some Green Stuff, you could probably fashion a staff for Sarah pretty easily. I know sculpting isn't really your thing, but I'm rather certain you could manage it.

As other options, find another mini with a knife in the right hand and swap that for the sword and give Sarah a dagger as that's perhaps a bit more accurate for a lithe sorceress. Or perhaps she's an evil cultist and it's a knife for sacrifices?

You're right, Pippin, I probably could fashion some sort of staff from a bit of wire.  A dagger's not a bad idea either.  I have to say though, that baseball idea is got a certain appeal too.  No one makes fantasy baseball figures, do they?  I know there's fantasy football, but as far as I know no baseball.  There's a figure range idea for you Reaper, make a line of fantasy-themed baseball players, and do some rules up to go with them.  It could be lots of fun. :)
