How fast do you paint?

Recommended Posts

Those are nice.  I like the Crusader, although your five hour paint job looks really nice to me.  Kind of jealous at that speed. your nurse is phenomenal.  I almost want to see a happy/terrified Yakko Warner saying "hello Nurse!".

I think I spend 1-3 hours on a fast paint job, and 4-10 hours on a mini where I want to push myself. I don't really paint for display or competition, even though I do enter some contents. I paint for fun and to be happy. I hope every mini I paint get some time being used in a game.

Frankly, I paint weird. I have about 60 miniatures going at once, and my paint sessions are often: look at my paints, look at the minis. Decide on one paint or blend where multiple minis seem to need that color. Grab 6-10 minis that need that color and decide if they really do. Paint said color on 4-8 minis. Elapsed time: 15 minutes. Process repeats if no kids are crying, I am still not needed elsewhere, and I am not too tired. Most of my paint sessions max out at 30 minutes. All in all I am pretty sure I get one tabletop paint job for about every 45 minutes, if you look at the average, and can keep track despite my getting bored of a group of sculpts and cycling them off the paint table every couple of weeks and replacing them.

My paint table is at once madness and Sparta.

Honestly not 100% sure, I doubt I'd be considered quick, although in the last two years since I've taken up painting again, I've definitely improved. Mostly due to the internet and the information available on it, as well as simply practicing. I'm more sure of myself and how to do what I want to do (mostly) so I don't tend to spend as long dithering about how to do something as I used to do.

I know I've spent over 15 hours on some minis, and roughly 40 on a large model. In 2015, I painted most of my Skaven army (some was painted in 2014) - which is something like 179 infantry sized models, 6 warmachines or large models and 2 or so medium models. I also painted my son's Vampire Counts army, which was one largish model, and about 90 or so infantry sized models. Of course this is all to table top standard - I may try to get better than that, but I only ever claim to paint to about that standard.

I also painted a bunch of our reaper figures up for our RP games, but I really don't know how many I did.

So anyway, whatever that works out to time wise I guess. Sometimes I do paint very quickly, when motivated, and I like the models, sometimes I take forever, set the model aside and get back to in spurts. It just seems to depend. I tend to have a lot of model ADHD and move between projects, as well as terrain projects, a *lot*. Like, right now I have 10 rats on my desk, a bunch of unfinished luna wolf space marines, 5 hex wraiths from my son's VC army, and I just started putting some Orks together... and that's just pretty much what I notice immediately, there are a bunch of older things hanging about waiting their turn too lol

Wow I'm a little shocked at the amount of responses stating "slow". I kinda wondered if perhaps I was the only one. I think if I were going for tabletop quality I could paint a little faster but even then I'm not sure. I can't honestly imagine painting whole armies right now. I don't really get the chance to play the games I'd want to so most of my painting is display and I generally focus on one piece at a time.

For a normal 28mm mini, I can do an OK job in one evening. Not sure of the exact hours, because it's usually done in little bursts of a half hour or so and then a break. A good job takes a week or so. going for the best I can possibly do will take about a month.

For anything larger, a minimum of a week.

Aku: Basic? ...BASIC!?   Dude, I've seen your Kingdom Death stuff you paint, it's fantastic.

What NomadZeke said.  You paint to a much higher standard than tabletop.  You could stop about halfway and run a highlight only and that MIGHT be tabletop+, but not low tabletop.

After reading everyone's comments on what tabletop quality is. I now believe I'm much faster than I originally thought. It's just that my normal paint job level is above "basic" tabletop.

All the details will be visible, even the buckles. You will see the whites of the eyes (though the irises/pupils will likely be blurred together). There will be layering. And depending on the model, even some freehand.

It's nice of you to say so guys, but I paint with lots of heart and very little technique, it's all basecoat, wash and highlight.

Aku-chan,  You are YOUR WORST critic..

You paint extremely well, and those of us that have seen it just shake our heads and go DANG!

Look at how he pulled that together.  You have a fan base, enjoy it,

and please... We love what you do.

I get inspiration from you on many visits to your show off postings !

Just paint, and show us what you are doing.  I'm in awe of some of the pieces you have painted.

The Kingdom Death's are incredible, and I have been given two, and I won't paint them yet..

(The Children of the Sun).

Again, Jasonator speaks the truth.  I'm also going to point out that I really dislike the Kingdom Death line for a couple of reasons that are ENTIRELY personal.  I look at your Kingdom Death models and think that the technique or how the colors went together would work somewhere else.  I appreciate that you have skill with slinging the paints.
