77389: Highland Heroine - WIP

Recommended Posts

I saw this figure a bit ago at my LGS and finally got around to picking it up.  This is one that I really wish came in metal, as cleaning off the mold lines was a challenge with my exacto knife.

i just finished the green stuff rocks on the base.  I'll probably start laying some base coats down tomorrow or Thursday.  Still uncertain what color scheme to go with.  The easy route would be to take a cue from Game of Thrones and paint her like either a wildling, a Stark soldier, or a member of the Night's Watch.  I'm tempted to try out a tartan pattern over her entire cloak, but that's probably crazy.

I believe someone already did that with a tartan..wasn't it Pingo?

I recall it looks great, so go for it!

Yyeahh ... It got away from me a bit.

I look forward to seeing what someone else can do with her.

Decided against the tartan color on the cloak for a couple reasons.  First one is that I am basing this figure off of my alma mater's colors (black and gold with Macleod of Lewis plaid: gold base with black and red lines).  Second is that the cloak looks too coarse and heavy to be plaid.  Instead, I am going to paint the tartan pattern on her tabard with the black cloak in the background, with gold trim.

I laid down a quick base for the cloak tonight.  I still need to go back and sharpen the lines before building up both the gold trim and dark highlights.

A bit more toying around.  The face needs smoothed out some, which might be tricky - the mold was a little lumpy on her cheek.

The black horizontal lines on the tartan are done - these were a 1:1 mix of Reaper's Pure Black and Pale Saffron.  Once I do the verticals, I'll go back over the intersections with nine pints of pure black each to complete the look of the plaid pattern.  Next will come the thin red lines.

Half an hour later, the rest of the tartan's done!

I finished the black vertical lines (quick job, most of them were hidden in folds) and then crossed the thin red lines so they intersected over the gold.  After the red, I did a thinned down touch to each gold square with Pale Saffron to soften the red lines a bit there.

On to the rest of the mini!

I painted most of these figures quickly or experiment when I did so. The exception is the reaper figure. I didn't really paint his face with too much detail, you can't see it due to the hat and what I did paint is sufficient (white eyes, basic colour variation on skin).

      Duelists
They look better in person (I swear, the light makes the skin look washed out more than it is, plus the hair has darker shadows.)

The dire crocodile, dire boar, and dire crab were one of the Bones 4 addons, and it doesn't look like they've hit retail just yet. Which is a shame, because we need more giant crabs.

The mud on the dire crocodile's base is just some water effect goo dribbled on that half of the base. The barnacles attached to the rocks on the dire crab's base were sculpted with green stuff. The rocks... those are just rocks.

I'm looking for something to stick Bones, specifically Ma'al Drakar's terrain, to a wooden base. It's not thick enough, at the area I want to place it, to pin effectively.

What kind of adhesives would work? I'm thinking epoxy, maybe? I just /really/ don't want to melt it accidentally and have to buy a new one.

This is my first mini painting, just finished it tonight. I have a lot to learn, especially the correct way to dry brush. But I followed a Reaper paint kit on the steps for their minis and this is what I came up with.

Once I get the hang of the minis themselves I'd like to learn to make custom bases, this one just looks awful as is.

For some reason I can't get the picture to show the color true either, it's a much more grayish blue than this bright color that is shown.

All in all, I'm pleased with its turn out.

I just like the way the blue/black wings look.  - I did the same with the Librarian Sophie. (last month)
I really need to paint up one of the metal versions for contrast.
I'm not sure what she is serving - Meat, bread and salad is the way I painted it, but that could be cake instead.
