HobbyPrincess
On Monday of this week @chaoshead dragged the Boy-Child out to run errands with him ... that lead them to Michael's. I have to admit as a not crafty, handy or artistic person ... EVERYTIME I go in that store I think I am Martha Stewart & can craft ANYTHING! Anyway ... chaoshead & the Boy-Child were there procuring Hobby supplies when the Boy-Child decided he had the PERFECT Hobby project for me. The Boy-Child told chaoshead that Dice Boxes would be perfect for me. Chaoshead had seen some in use in a Battle report online somewhere & thought that would be a good way to keep the dice under control & the table from getting dinged up. So long story short ... when I came home from work that day the Boy-Child proudly proclaimed he had found me a Hobby Project of my very own! I am curious by nature so I asked what that could possibly be. He busts out 2 shadow boxes & pieces of leather then tells me "You can make dice boxes." I was surprised and honestly excited! I truly enjoyed sanding, staining & poly coating the table with chaoshead and my son may have actually found the perfect Hobby Project for me. There is still a good amount of work to do before I am willing to call them finished ... I am a little OCD & a bit of a perfectionist so we will see how long this takes me, lol! I LOVE that my boys want to include me in THEIR hobby so like the Princess I am I humbly accepted this Challenge and set out on my first (mostly) Solo Hobby Project! I will post pics for anyone interested in following my Hobby project journey. As with anything Feedback is a gift ... good, bad or indifferent it will help me improve ... so lay it on me! Chris Palmer
Very cool project! I wonder if there's someway you could emboss or stamp a monogram or gameroom logo into the bottom piece of leather to personalize them a bit.
HobbyPrincess
@Chris Palmer ... that is something to think about & I will run it by my prince Choashead to see what he thinks & how or what we should do. Thanks for the idea!

malefactus
AN EXCELLENT START! Be warned though, crafting of any sort is an addictive activity. You may get hook & find yourself happily looking forward to each new project &, each new day that that project brightens. HAVE FUN! The keeping-the-dice-under-control conjured up memories of erstwhile friend, Buddy, fishing his enthusiastically thrown dice from out of the onion dip. Guildenstern
Wonderful!! So exciting to see new projects, and to hear your spawnling was thinking of you =D (I have three boys that is NOT a common occurrence lol) Some suggestions of things you can do with the boxes: - wood burning tips, you can make a lot of fun inlaid type patterns and designs! My #2 son did celtic designs all over his toiletries box (one of the "treasure" type chests from Michael's) - tole painting! well, sort of. It's just painting either with stencils, which *you* can design and make, or pre-made ones, of which there are quite a lot. You use regular craft paint and something like modge podge to seal it on. You can also use decals for instance, or scraps of interesting pictures and use the modge podge to varnish it on as well. Anyway, looking forward to watching this with interest :D have FUN!!
HobbyPrincess
@Xherman1964 ... Thanks for the warm welcome! I do intend on having a ton of fun with this! @malfactus ... Who knows ... in a couple of month's I may actually be the crafter I "think" I am every time I go into Michael's. I guess we will just have to wait and see. On a side note I looked through a post or two of yours last night and WOW! You are quite a talent! @Guildenstern ... I will think about your suggestions and run the by my Prince and craft instructor @chaoshead and see what he thinks. In the end they will be his boxes ... I'm just the unskilled labor, lol! I have to say in regards to my youngest spawn ... he is far more likely to do this than his sister. He is a thoughtful (not so little) spawnling.

I had a pretty good little laugh at your little tale sir, thank you! While these are "my" dice boxes I have told her that if she wants the project she can pretty much do whatever she would like with them. Wood burning or engraving would be cool if we could find something that we could all agree on. I was originally thinking just a dark stain for the frame, to match the new game table, with the lighter colored leather on the inside bottom to also match the new game table. We shall see what she comes up with!
chaoshead
Very cool project! I wonder if there's someway you could emboss or stamp a monogram or gameroom logo into the bottom piece of leather to personalize them a bit. I did think about this briefly while buying the supplies to do the project, well sort of. My original idea was to buy a few different colors of the leather and cutting a shape or pattern out of the larger piece and using the other colors to fill it back in. The selection of colors at Michael's was less than thrilling so I just sort of threw the idea out the window. I am not sure what I would want the design to be either, that is the other problem.

Or how about a pair of flaming d6! :)
Dr.Bedlam
I made something similar once with an unfinished wooden cigar box from JoAnn's, using green flock paper to simulate green baize inside. This looks most interesting; leather never occurred to me. Try sanding the inner and outer surface of the box; you'll be amazed at the finish you get with very little effort.
HobbyPrincess
@Dr.Bedlam ... I am definitely sanding the box! I want a nice smooth surface when I stain & poly coat it. Plus I just like to sand, something cathartic about it. Also a nice vehicle for my OCD tendencies, lol.
