The HobbyPrincess's first (mostly) Solo Hobby Project

Recommended Posts

Looks like a fun project with a lot of room to just play around and have fun... if you end up not liking the final result, you could always change plans and go with something painted for the wood, right? :;):

One thing I'd suggest: If you're using leather for the rolling surface, make sure you get it really flat, otherwise you're going to end up with a lot of debate over which number is facing up when a d20 lands slightly tilted... ::):

@vegascat ... I had to have this explained to me by @chaoshead  ...  seems like a cool concept ... who knows where this will lead ...

We are debating on any sort of design that we may or may not add to the leather.  I am pretty sure we are still completely undecided on this.  Even brought it up to part of our gaming group, while some liked the idea none of them had anymore suggestions on what if anything we should put into the leather.

We are also debating on rounding off the top edges or not, I think we have both come to a decision on this one and it is a yes.

That discussion lead to the discussion of possibly adding a design to the outside of the box as well, which of course just lead to more discussion and indecision as to what if anything we would add.

I am also still trying to figure out which type of adhesive to use to attach the leather to the boxes.  The one that was suggested in a leather working forum is SOOOOO flammable that the package advises to shut off ALL pilot lights, open flames and heat sources in your entire house!!!  Needless to say that will not be the adhesive of choice for this or any other project that I ever do.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what type of adhesive I should use please let me know.

UPDATE: I know this is not the time or the place but this week/weekend has been VERY busy! I was enjoying my other hobbies/passions.

I spent Friday night playing nerdy (but OH SO fun) Board Games with @chaoshead & The Boy Child as well as a friend & fellow nerd!

Then Saturday from 7 am - 5 pm I was either prepping to go to or at my American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. (I'm the brunette) I was SO tired I was in bed by 8 pm (it was still daylight for Pete's sake, lol!)

Sunday was spent running the MUI's Run for the Ribbon 5K around the neighborhoods surrounding our Local Zoo to support Men's Health & Men's Cancers awareness. Then we got to go to the Zoo for free! That was a 6:30 am - 1 pm day in the HOT Midwestern sun, lol! (this is me & my running buddy & best friend  ...  How about that Team Name! LOL!)

Also ... in regards to this project we are still making design decisions and trying to finish up other projects to make room to work on this one!

Thanks for all the suggestions, ideas & interest!

You should check out the website This to That. It is all about gluing things together. They recommend Barge for leather to wood which is a shoe glue that I am entirely unfamiliar with.

Thanks, I saw that listed on one of the woodworking sites but I am having a hard time finding that adhesive locally so I can read all the warnings and hazards and instructions before buying.

I may just end up getting some spray-on contact type adhesive in the end.

Although I am considering using just rubber cement as well.

If you go with a spray adhesive, Super 77 from 3M is good. Just be sure you carefully mask off any areas where you don't want the adhesive, and cover furniture, and do it outside if at all possible.

As for putting a mark on the leather, you could get a wax seal (they probably have these at Michael's too) and heat it over an alcohol flame to use as a brand. A bit dangerous, but who wants to live forever without burning a house down? You could also freehand it with a woodburning tool, which might be slightly safer, if you have the confidence for that. If you really want to splurge and intend on a large amount of future leather and/or wood craft, you could have a branding iron made for you though that starts at about a $150 investment and up from there.

@ultrasquid  --  That is actually the adhesive I finally decided to go with, thanks.  We are still discussing whether or not to mark the leather and the boxes themselves.  I think we are both sort of leaning toward just plain old boring plain boxes and leather.

Sorry to disappoint everyone.

Who knows though, we could both change our minds, find inspiration and make something a little less boring....
