A Pair of Xorn. Otherworld DM33 & Ral Partha 11-497

Recommended Posts

***Since I wasn't doing anything else....****

from Wiki

Xorn devour earthen and silicate materials, and have a taste for gems, precious metals, and magical items. Xorns sometimes attack wealthy adventurers, especially on the Prime Material Plane, where it is much harder for the xorn to find its normal sustenance.

A xorn is described as having a barrel-shaped body with trilateral radial symmetry; three arms, legs and eyes spaced around its torso. The mouth is located at the top of the body.
Because a xorn can move through earth as easily as a fish moves through water, when they choose to attack they often use ambushes, hiding just below or above a potential victim. In fact, they often move around with the lower part of their body inside the earth.
Xorn come in three categories: minor, average, and elder.
Another creature related to the xorn is the xaren. They are slightly smaller with shinier, metallic hides. While xorn feed on minerals and stone, xaren prefer enchanted metal, such as magic weapons and armor.

I started on these 2 last night during the hangout...

I am wondering if I shouldn't paint this one as a Xaren, as it is a little smaller....

This is the first figure I work on from Otherworld, and it is a nice piece with good casting and minimal mold lines. The 7(!) pieces fit together pretty well, but I needed to drill out 2 of the arm holes, and do a little crack filling...

Something like Magma, it will melt the rocks so he can digest it.

So listening to ideas, and having a thought or 2 of my own, I worked on these 2 guys....

I decided that indeed, the inside of these things needs to be lava like, (thanks Xherman!) so I am trying to paint their gullets that way...

I also decided that their lips and teeth better be pretty tough, so the teeth are Black Metal, while the lips are GW Tin Bitz...

The eyes are a mix of Citrine Alchemy and GX Yellow Ink, figuring the eyes needed to look a little 'otherworldly',,,,

The white that you see on the eyes is just reflected light, not paint....

So I did some more work on these 2 over the weekend...

I added some orange ink around the eyes, then did the Irises witha Reaper Sample metallic blue with some Inktensity Blue mixed in, then the slit pupils with Garnet Alchemy mixed with Mayhem Red.

The Claws were done with a mix of Iroku, Moonstone Alchemy and Amber Alchemy, then I mixed some Mohave white and white alchemy into that, and then a bit more white alchemy and some reaper leather white. Then a wash of dilute Agrax Earthshade.

The 'Partha base is different greys and blues then a wash of black magic wash.

The Gem is Cantabric Blue for a base, with Tesla and Mediterranean blues highlighting up.

Great Work!  I like your choice of colors for the mouth.

Moar work!

These 2 are pretty much finished...

I decided not to do 'eye spot reflections', as it would be hard to do on a trilaterally symmetrical creature with any kind of 'reality'....

(Thanks Dilvish!)

The Ral Partha is done, but I may do a little more to the base, maybe a touch of flock, or some other color of sand / stone to break it up a bit....

The Otherworld mini is done, but now I need to do a base....

I have a base from RAFM, (91) that I thought might work, but it is just a tad small...

But maybe I could do my own with some green stuff?

Not sure how good these look, may have to skin coat them and do some better texturing..... as well as adding more...

But I need to make sure the Mini fits as well!

And when I said 'Done' I did mean subject to people saying "HEY STOOPID, you need to XXXXX"  ::P:

So let me know what you think!

Cinder didn't work out for my return to hobbying, so I decided to try something a bit less ambitious....
Reading back through past projects, I saw one of the hangout minis of the month was Blacktounge, Gnoll Ranger from Reaper, and remembered that I had picked up this set at a paint day with the New England Miniatures folks at the Citadel games store....
I figure if I can follow my old WIP, I won't be stressing to much, and I will have another figure to add to the Frostgrave warband that was started so long ago,,,,
So the 2 got assembled and puttied, and now the never ending search for minor mold lines can begin when the putty is dry...
      thanks for taking a look!
      Wish me luck!!!!

Finished my first mini this year, and oddly enough it was a speedpaint, taking just over an hour...

On the flipside, some of those colours work together really, REALLY well, like Sunrise Orange and Heart Throb Paint.

Due to Brain Weasels and other Real Life Issues, I haven't been doing much, really almost no, fantasy painting...
One of the things I have been doing is looking at old WIPs, and suddenly the desire to paint a DRAGON, came over me....
So here is the start of my new work on Cinder, #10014, in METAL...
Hopefully, I can keep up the sudden burst of enthusiasm....
So planning on mold line hunting, and trying to decide what color to paint this dragon...
As I am old school, the webbing between the back spines is leading me to green, but need to check the books to see which way to go....
About time you returned from the place I couldn't reach you minion......
      OMG, please not again....

any and all comments gratefully ignored....

This year has really limited my leisure time, so I have been absent around the forums. I have been unwilling to give up my painting time, though, as it has been keeping me sane. Fortunately I had been working on speed-painting in previous years, and it has served me well of late, allowing me to complete pieces in just a session or two every other week.
As a result I have built up a nice backlog of miniatures in my collection that no one has ever seen. I had a free moment today, and the weather was cooperative, so I dusted them off (literally), and snapped some photos. The rockmaws are the fist to be shared! I love having multiple variants of monsters, even more so when there are young. I like a touch of realism in my high fantasy, and it is nice to have miniatures reflect that these creatures have an ecology and lifecycle of sorts (even if completely fantastical).
