Storytime, it's been a while, let's find out what's happening.

MESSENGERS.

Achik, Leon and Luna raced through the Jungle, their raptor mounts where fast and agile.

Other creatures swiftly got out of their way when they saw these predators approaching.

I hope we will get there in time, Achik said, I have a bad feeling about it.

Why? Leon asked, the caverns are hidden, Xolotl and his people have been safe there for decades.

I don't know, Achik replied, I have a feeling, I hope I'm wrong!

Luna warned Leon, big predator ahead! Maybe you can scare it off with that thunderstick of yours!

Leon noticed a large reptile a few yards further, it had just noticed them and tried to decide if they were food or a threat.

He fired his pistol, the bullet bounced off the creature's thick hide, but it did have the desired effect.

The monster turned around and ran into the Jungle.

Faster and faster the raptors ran, if they keep this up we will be back in a few days, Achik said.

We're making good time, Leon agreed.

Let's hope your feelings are off and we will find everyone safe and sound.

Xolotl will be pleased to learn of Kataa's people and their invitation!

Unpleasant Surprise

Sssllthr arrived at the Citadel, eager to bring the good news to the Frogking he hurried to the Palace.

The guards let him in, the doors of the Throneroom opened and he approached the throne.

His Majesty sat upon his throne and before him stood Cantor, a few priests and then he noticed Neith and Bonita.

His heart pounded in his chest, they had captured the Spider Queen!

Finally she would pay for the death of his brother!

He approached the throne, Your Majesty! I bring good news, he said.

The King looked at his Royal Assassin, AH! Sssllthr! Good to see you!

I as well have good news, meet our new allies!

We have made peace and Neith will aid us when we need her.

For a moment Sssllthr's heart froze, his vision blurred and his hand slowly grabbed the sliver flute he wore around his neck.

NO! The Frogking yelled with a booming voice.

Sssllthr snapped out of his trance, letting go of the flute.

She's our ally now, there will be no hostilities, His Majesty said.

Sssllthr looked up to his King, She killed my brother!

The King nodded, I understand my friend, but such are the ways of War.

You have killed many and later some of their kin became our allies or servants as well.

Set aside your personal feelings, you're a Royal Assassin!

Sssllthr looked at the Spider Queen, one day, he thought he would relish in killing her.

But he knew well this was not the time and place.

He bowed to the King.

As you wish Majesty! He uttered.

Good, now what did you want to tell me? The King asked.

I've found the Rebel's hiding place! Sssllthr said.

They have allied themselves with the last survivors of the Paleskin Army and there are dragons there!

The King leaned back in his throne.

Great news my friend, dragons you say?

Sssllthr gave a full report of what he had seen.

We can wipe them out once and for all, their hiding place will become their grave he said.

The King nodded, he turned to Cantor. My General, what do you propose?

Cantor stepped forward, so we're dealing with dragons, flying firebreathers, the Paleskins have firepower, the Rebels are pretty safe in their caverns, so we need something that can handle that.

I want to bring Kroq-Gar! His hide is so thick he will not be harmed by bullets, arrows or fire, he will break through their lines and he can burrow into the caverns devouring all.

We need an army to escort him!

The Frogking agreed.

Kroq-Gar is a good choice, Taloc is his Master, He will be at your command!

Since the fight might extend to the caverns I think this will be a great opportunity for Neith to show her allegiance, he continued.

He turned to Neith, will you aid us?

Neith nodded, as we agreed.

I will command the burrowing insects and monsters, they will drive the Rebels out.

As promised by you, I will then rule the caverns and underworld till you need me again, she added.

Of course, the King said

He looked at Sssllthr, and you my Royal Assassin?

Are you ready to accept Neith as our ally or do we have a problem?

I sense your anger and I can understand, but I need you to comply, do not fail me!

Sssllthr bowed again.

Yes Your Majesty!

I will accept.

Neith turned to Sssllthr.

I know you hate me for killing your brother, but at that time we were enemies and at War, I have no personal grudge against you and you almost killed me when you summoned that giant worm.

You made me suffer more than you know, maybe that will somewhat satisfy you I hope we can put this behind us.

Sssllthr looked at the King and then at Neith.

I will accept you as an ally, I will set aside my feelings, but know this, at the first glance of betrayal, if I suspect you to turn against us again, I WILL kill you, no matter what happens to me.

GOOD! The King bellowed, we're all friends now it seems he said with a faint smile directed at Sssllthr.

Now go!

Prepare the Army!

Bring me the heads of my enemies!

Foraging.

Admiral Pargo had ordered the fleet to a halt, they had discovered some smaller islands and he decided that they would send out a foraging expedition.

There was plenty of dried food and livestock aboard for the remaining journey, but he wouldn't let an opportunity to get fresh water and more variety of food go to waste.

One might never know what happened and he rather be prepared for anything.

Besides the men could use a little distraction.

Since they had spotted some ships that seemed to be following them, he had ordered the ships in the rear to change position so they could fire their guns at anyone who dared to attack them.

He looked through his spyglass at the nearest islands and gave orders to prepare the expedition, he would send a party to two of those islands each.

Hidalgo and Andres had volunteered to be part of one of those and he had given permission.

A little later two barges rowed to the islands.

One party landed on the island to their starboard side the other on the island to their portside.

Hidalgo Alcudia  and Andres Segova were with the latter party.

Excited they helped row the barge.

The other party arrived on their island first, led by Manuel de Pinto a reliable young Officer, the men set foot on the beach.

A few men stayed with the barge to guard it and the others took bags, barrels and crates with them to gather food and fresh water.

After a while they discovered a small lake and Manuel was pleased to see that this was fresh drinkable water.

A few men were collecting fresh fruit from trees nearby and when one of them spotted some sort of pig a hunting party was formed to get fresh meat.

This was going well, Manuel thought.

Hidalgo's  boat also reached it's destination, this was the largest of the two islands.

Andres almost fell when he stepped out of the boat, being used to the movement of the Sea, his legs needed to adapt to walking on Land again.

Hidalgo laughed when he saw his friend struggling to walk for a moment.

It will pass, he laughed, come on, let's see what this island has to offer.

Andres had brought his journal, always eager to find new species  he wanted to make sure he could record anything he would find.

The men followed the same procedure as the other party.

Soon they as well found some fresh water, this time it was a river.

Andres already spotted some birds he had never seen before,  one of the sailors had a crossbow and shot one, bringing it to Andres.

Here, so you can study it when we're back on the ship, he said.

Thank you! Andres said, I appreciate it.

He looked at the river and upon coming closer a few fish swam away from the riverbanks.

Trying to see how they looked Andres stepped closer.

Suddenly a larger creature broke surface and stared at him, Andres was in awe, it was a big mammal with a large almost square mouth, he stepped back and warned the others.

Seeing the men, the creature decided to play it safe and went under again, swimming away.

What was that? Hidalgo asked.

I have never seen such a species before, Andres replied excited, who knows what we will find here let alone when we reach our destination!

Better keep your distance though, Hidalgo replied, we don't know if it's dangerous.

They followed the river upstream and after a while they saw a small village in the distance.

Hidalgo took his spyglass, what do you see? Andres asked.

A wooden pallisade, some wooden huts it seems, I don't see people yet though, it seems abandoned, there's no smoke from fires or anything.

Shall we investigate? a sailor asked, grasping his crossbow.

Hidalgo thought about it, we will have to be careful, but it might be wise to see who lives here.

The group advanced slowly, weapons ready.

Every few yard they stopped so Hidalgo could take another look, when they came closer he noticed that the walls were breached.

That doesn't look good, he said.

It looks like someone attacked them.

Even more careful they walked further, suddenly they found a corpse.

A young man in his twenties from the look of it, he had a dark skin and only wore a loincloth, a large wound in his chest showed that he was killed.

No weapons or belongings, the attacker must have taken those, Hidalgo concluded.

Nervous the men looked around but they saw nobody.

Again they moved forward.

A few more corpses were found all had terrible wounds and all were stripped of their belongings.

Finally they reached the gate.

It was breached as Hidalgo had seen, they entered the village, there was nobody there, only corpses, huts were all intact, but the doors were bashed in.

A sailor turned to Hidalgo, SIR!, all the dead are men, where are the women and children?

Hidalgo looked around, you're right, he said, someone has raided this village, killed the men and took the women and children with them.

We have to save them Andres said.

Are you mad? Hidalgo replied.

We have no idea who these people are, why this has happened or where they took the women and children.

There are only a few of us, we need to be careful.

You're right, Andres said, it's just...it's terrible, right?

I know, Hidalgo said.

Come on, he said, we can't do anything more here, let's go back to the ship.

We have water and fruit, this is not our business.

Let's report this to the Admiral, he can decide what to do.

The group followed the river back to where they came from.

After a while they reached the beach where the barge was waiting.

They started loading it when suddenly they heard roars from the Jungle, a few seconds later a sailor fell down with a spear in his chest.

We're under attack! Hidalgo yelled, into the boat!

Quickly they got into the boat, two men with crossbows fired at the treeline and the others rowed for their lives.

From the Jungle the attackers appeared, Andres blood froze in his veins, those were giant apes!

Looking again he noticed they looked like large apes, but they had four arms and they wore clothes and weapons.

A few of them came running to the beach wielding huge axes and spears.

FASTER! Hidalgo yelled to the rowers, firing his pistol at the beastmen.

He missed, but for a moment the apes were startled by the loud noise, one of them threw a spear which landed in the water just in front of the boat.

They were lucky, the apes stayed on the beach, maybe they can't swim? Andres said.

I don't care, Hidalgo said,we need to get back to the ship.

Upon returning they sought out the Admiral and told him their story.

Amaro Pargo listened to them.

Right! He said, what happened there is none of our business, I will not risk any men for natives we never met.

Who knows how many of those apemonsters live there?

Let's be grateful that you made it out alive and that you brought water and fruit.

He was interrupted by the Bosun.

SIR! Manuel's party hasn't returned yet and it's getting dark!

Amaro looked worried, what if there were apemen there as well?

They got on deck and the Admiral took out his spyglass, he let out a sigh of relief when he saw the barge with Manuel and his men approaching.

Apparently they had taken their time, unaware of what happened on the other island.

Good, the Admiral said, let's get them aboard and continue our journey.

And those Apemen? Andres asked.

What are they?

Amaro shrugged, I rather not know, maybe the ones who are following us will find out, that might solve one problem, he grinned.

There are many strange things out there in the undiscovered lands and waters my friend, he continued, sometimes it's wiser to let it be.

We need to follow our own path, we have a destination, let's not stray!

The fleet continued it's journey, Andres stood at the railing looking at the islands, what else would they find when they reached the New World?

Does anyone else remember Dino-Riders?  Did anyone else have any that they played with as a (ahem) child?

I remember the show, but I was already in my twenties when the show aired.

They were not the first with the idea of mounted dinos.

I've read lots of comics and books in my youth and I'm sure I've read stuff like Tarzan who found a Lost Valley where Dinosaurs still existed.

Not sure in which comic or book i've seen/read about mounted dinos before, but I'm sure I did.

of course, <Cough, Cough> I just had them to save them for my future kits <cough> never played with them myself(*ahem, hrmm*) nope, only took them out of the package to inspect them.  Yea, that it, inspect them for damage... and fit...yes. YES

The big question I always had was How did these not succeed?!?!? they should have been like plastic crack to every boy under the age of.... well every boy and a lot of girls.

too the point, I am enjoying the stories and look forward to seeing minis aligned with them!  written story telling is a skill I have never really mastered (or even gotten a decent grasp on, truth to tell).  I can tell a good story but when I write I tend to be very bare bones and no filler so my work usually is short (which most people consider a mercy) and about as exciting as a history book on american civics written for 7th graders.

I have always loved Dinos and Fantasy and that will never stop.

As for the stories, I hope people like them, I like to write them , but I'm not a real author, so it may not be the best story, but it fits my project(s) and I just like doing it.

I'm trying to paint minis for all of the characters/monsters, but since I'm a slow painter and have several projects, it may take a while.

Currently printing the Kroq-Gar that I mentioned above.

It will be a while before it is printed/assembled and painted but I'm excited about the model.

From my understanding and experience, a lot of it as a mix of other lines available at the time it launched, the series being bounced around times like crazy, the action features of the majority of the line being prone to breaking (Even some of the non-action features were prone to breaking such as the straps for gear...and the legs of deinonychus and gallymimus were prone to snapping) and expensive, and that it was a dinosaur line...which meant that a lot of people viewed dinosaurs as, well, dinosaurs and if you asked for one as a present, you were more likely to end up getting some random dinosaur from other lines. The dinosaurs of the line were stripped of action features and resold as at least 2 other lines afterwards (First with the Smithsonian collection ones which didn't even get new art and they didn't bother with more than flat plastic where they covered battery compartments...though the copyright markings were changed. The second was part of the Catilacs and Dinosaurs line). I remember being promised the T-Rex (Because I'd saved up for one and was going to buy it when my mother told me that my aunt was getting me it for my birthday...) and ended up with one of the giant playschool Rexes instead...I wasn't happy about that.

Jurassic Park is the line that created the JP mark on all of their dinosaurs so you knew what it was easily identifiable as a Jurassic Park toy.

Saddle decorations

Top Floor of the pyramid.

There is a little warp.

I can handle that later when assembling and adding more stuff like vegetation/skulls/critters.

      Another one bites the dust….😆

One of my favorite sculpt…but in the old Bones plastic. I put a little extra into the base, otherwise it was a pretty straight forward zen of Bones quick paint job. Overall I like the scheme and it has given me ideas for when I paint my metal version. Not sure about the green face and the blue glow under the rib cage is too subtle.

And as an aside …..the quality of Testors Dullcoat is not nearly as good as it was a decade ago. The newer formulation continues to give me a semi gloss finish.  Oh well.

      My stash will arrive today!
I haven't done a WIP in a very long time , something I intend to remedy.
I am extremely excited to get my hands on my contribution to Bones 5, the Whispering Ghoulsbane. Maybe more so than any prior piece I have made. Seeing as how I don't actually have the mini in had at this moment, Id thought I'd fill this space with some history about the concept.

I like to watch reviews for feedback on pieces I've made (and learned a lot).  A few review waffled on what the thing was, exactly. Part of me revels in this ambiguity -it is what you want it to be. That said it does have a mundane monster  origin story.......wait, say, lets make a game of it!

Which "old school" monster served as the primary inspiration for the Whispering Ghoulsbane? take a guess.

Wait wait wait! it's here, at this very moment! Delivery! let the prepping begin.
      Step 1: Open the bag.

      That is all for now.

My 8 year old son painted these shortly after his birthday last spring. I actually liked his colors and the pattern on the Carnotaurus. Mostly I was over joyed that he didn’t glob the paint on for once. A few weeks ago I decided to paint the eyes, teeth, claws, and base for him. Them a coat of sealer.  I think they look great for the toy box. Here are my crappy before and after.

Wasn't totally happy with how this came out. I wanted a reptilian version of a tiger pattern for stalking in the jungle. Colour scheme worked I think and overall it's a great model but it has some issues I struggled with.

It's not symmetrical, the ridges and scales on each side are in different places and don't align making the patterning problematic. That coupled with the fact that some of the larger scales fade out and a lot of the smaller scales are almost indistinct took some of the fun out if it. Normally I enjoy doing scales and applying washes and dry rushing as well as picking out patterns on individual scales but this was hard work.

Will still make the kids worry when it hits the tabletop though 🙂
