7-Day Goblin Challenge Official Rules

Recommended Posts

Don't supposed we could add...

Oyez! Oyez! All witnesses, members of the cheering section, and all other lingerers who wander by...

Let it be known from now and henceforth that any who doth proclaim they might be inclined to take up a Goblin 7 Day Challenge are henceforth, from the time of said proclamation, sworn under profound oath to take up said challenge within the course of the next twelve months, barring any medical or financial disability.

Those who fail in delivery shall be teased mercilessly by being called a Pootwaddle.

So it is, and so shall it be!

Huzzah!

Edit: A Pootwaddle is the stankiest of creatures, known to lay a fart so foul that rather than dissipating it hovers on the ground until some hapless creature steps in it, upon which the stank clings to the victim. No soap can remove this vile stank.

Because well... ::D:  :devil:

And it's how we roped ub3r into doing it...

Though I can see the appeal of the challenge, and I could make the time to do it, I currently have several restrictions:

- I disqualified myself from Kaladrax over two years ago as I already cleaned up the mold lines.

- I only have the dragon from DDS2 as I didn't have the budget for the whole set when Bones 2 was still active.

- I don't own a Khanjira.

fun to watch people do the challenged, but I myself will never do one

Namely:

- I have no size 0 brushes and if I did get some, I wouldn't want to basically throw it away on one large figure because I don't have many/any

- large figures do not come to me often so when they do I want to do a good job on them

But good luck to all those that want to do it!

Cheap, sturdy size 0s are actually really easy to come by

not at the cheapo store i shop at =P if it's not a couple of bucks per brush then it's outta my pricing range

but still, it's fun to watch people do these challenges

For the Maal challenges will everyone who has completed a challenge need to use smaller brushes, or just for the "official" competition?

For people watching events unfold, remember that this operates on the honor system. We have no way of verifying if the participants are strictly adhering to the tool use rules, and my assumption will be that everyone is. While it might seem amusing to joke that people are not, please be aware that whatever the intent of the joke this will be seriously disruptive to concentration and enjoyment. Please exercise discretion, the event will be stressful.

Remember, you have to add an extra 0 onto your paintbrush for every challenge you've done before! So for buglips, master of no sleep, he must use a 000!

No to both, because that is not one of my rules.  It is and will always be 0, 10mm x 1mm.

Please also note that every time somebody decides to be funny on a rules thread it compels me to address it and clarify to avoid confusion, so please don't do it.  Else I'll have to enlist a mod for pruning.

Hey look, yet another Jasper topic.....

But this one is different (I hope).  I actually have a time frame in mind, to get this finished before the end of 2020, and submitted for the annual diorama contest.

I love dioramas, and I've been pretty happy with the few I've made. BUT I always put off getting started and then end up rushing over Christmas to get everything done.
So this year I'm starting in January (if just barely) so that I will hopefully get some stuff done before December.

I've had the idea for this diorama since the very first moment I saw my first "sneak preview" of Khanjira (that would have been approximately Fri, Oct 25, 2013, 7:57 PM ADT, according to when I got the email from Kickstarter).
My first though was something like "What a beast! Imagine if he was fighting something from a smaller scale, like CAV...."
So that has been bouncing around in my head ever since.
Then I was messaging with @Pochi a few weeks ago about the contests and got talking about dioramas, and I mentioned this idea, and she said I HAD to do it.....so here we are.

Basic concept is the classic Kaiju attacking a future city harbour. CAVs (any or all of tanks, vehicles, mechs, infantry, maybe even aircraft) defending. (I briefly considered going even smaller scale as I have quite a bit of 6mm stuff too, but CAVs are easier to work with,  I have about a billion of them, and they are awesome).

Today was a beginning.  I grabbed some stuff and laid it out just to get an idea of a size I'm going to want.

Obviously I just grabbed what was handy to get some scale. Khanjira is represented by my 7 days Khanjira (handy, that ). I plan to try to get him a little more upright, since he won't be on his base and at least his front foot will be "under water". With his pose (which I don't think I have the skill or know how to adjust too much) I'm thinking maybe an elevated highway that he has just crushed to be what his right leg is on.  That or a boat of some sort....we'll see.
The box is just a reference for the land, glasses are just some buildings.  I'm picturing something similar to the Halifax waterfront with boardwalks or something and docks/jetties (the grey upside down drawer represents) and then big buildings. Army will be in place along the waterfront, so some barricades and stuff. Possibly a trench of energy blasted ruin from the "breath weapon" if I think I can pull that off.  Again, we'll see.
So just from the mock up, this is going to be fairly massive...like approaching 2 foot kind of dimensions
Not something I would do if I was following advice on building award winning dioramas, but then that's not what I'm focusing on.  I just want to make the image in my mind a reality, and I'm using the contest deadline to hopefully focus me.
I'm also going to have to learn to do a bunch of new stuff for this, which should be fun!

Step one will be to dig out my other Khanjira and start cleaning up up.  And decide on what I'm going to use for a base for this thing.....

Now that I've completed Domog, high priest of Rovagug, it's time to move on to the lesser threat: the Tarrasque, Herald of Rovagug.

I got Khanjira the world breaker with the Kickstarter ages ago, and dusted off the box recently while working on Domog.  I was saddened to discover the big guy's left leg was missing.  Fortunately, Reaper is awesome and they shipped me a replacement leg!  With a nice bottle of paint to boot. :-)

I say attempted because of two reasons...  First is this is the show off thread, and secondly, no official confirmation yet on the dates since @buglips*the*goblin has been occupied with other things, although a part of me suspects that @OneBoot might vouch.  At least on the times

      WIP Thread: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/83285-whitewulfe-attemps-the-seven-day-goblin-challenge-dragons-dont-share-2014-edition/

This post may or may not be wordy, I haven't decided yet.  I'm tired, I'm sore, my eyes burn, but...  It. Is. DONE!  At least in my eyes.  A lot of things aren't as well done as I'd like, but that's what happens when you lose the equivalent of almost two full days to surprise contractors.  Thankfully I had terrain to work on while they took up most of that time!

      Rules thread: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69639-7-day-goblin-challenge-official-rules/

      Just what is the 7-Day Goblin Challenge?  Well, I summarize it as follows: Stupidly large mini, comically small brush.  Right now, it's four different minis you can choose from, you can only use up to a size 0 brush, aaaaand you have all of seven days to finish it.  That's it.  No airbrushes, no fancy paper towel tricks, no smearing paint with your fingers (as that's a "brush" that's bigger than size 0!), no direct application of paint, no aerosol cans... You get the idea. ^_^;;;

Start time: October 27th, at 09:05 MST/MDT (aka -07:00 GMT)
      End time: Nov 3rd, at 02:02 MST/MDT

Getting all of this to fit in my mock lighting setup was an absolute pain, doubly so since I had to steal hubby's painting light to try and get even lighting across things. o_O

      ^Starting setup, with time displayed

^Ending setup, with time displayed.  At this point, I technically had 7 hours and 3 minutes left in my seven days, and by the time I'm done writing this it'll probably be a full hour later (something about editing down over forty pictures, and that's AFTER I filtered redundant pics out of the equation o_O)

In order to not make this an absolute pain to scroll through, I'll showcase key pictures, with additional detail pics being hidden behind spoiler tags.

^Obviously the main attraction is first.

      Additional dragon pictures:

      Terrain details:

First hero is apparently the dwarf cleric...  At least with the order I took pics!

      Additional pics:

      ^The sorceress~

      Additional pics:

      ^The thief/rogue/sneaky one!

      Additional pics:

      The... Ranger/archer guy!

      Additional pics:

^And last, but not least...  Sir Purple of Shiny, as more or less named by OneBoot...  Well, inspired by due to purple and how shiny his armour was for quite some time...

      Additional pics!

Now, comes the slightly... I dunno, philisophical part of it all.  Would I do things differently next time?  Most definitely.  I'd prefer to give my heroes more time, and also make sure I have brushes that I trust well enough to do eyes.  I had to pull out my 000 Reaper brush to try the eyes....  I also wouldn't wait until after 1am  in the final hours of the challenge to do said eyes either.  I'd also not recommend losing a good chunk of time to surprise contractors either, or at least keep painting as best one can - although that first day of surprise contractors, uhm....  Yeah, anything other than priming would have been impossible while they were doing work, the entire building was vibrating.

Would I recommend this kind of thing to others?  Sure, why not...  If you're willing to do a reasonable amount of planning ahead of time.  I'd also strongly recommend having time off while you do this, AND not being the person who cooks.  Assigning cooking duties to someone else (or, y'know, having a freezer/fridge full of ready to make meals) would probably also be rather handy.  If you're in a relationship, or living with others (be they roommates, or parents, or whatever), DEFINITELY make sure to talk it over with them.  I'm lucky, I'm married to an enabler, and by that he's the main reason I was able to do the challenge.  That and he was quite happy to work on relic quests in FF XIV:ARR while I painted

Oh, and make sure you've actually GOT groceries to cook with if you are going to be the cook!  Don't have to run out a few times during said challenge, DOUBLY SO if you happen to have to WALK everywhere when you do said errands.  No, not even to go and get your package of big stompy robots, you silly fox!

I went into this with a rather basic plan...  Colours picked out for the heroes (but apparently only their capes/cloaks), and a basic colour pattern idea on the dragon.  I'd recommend not winging it like I did, because it brings up some rather interesting (and annoying!) problems as you go, like how on earth you're going to make it work, and blend it all together.

Will I give another one a shot?  We shall see.  Obviously there's recovering from this one, but most importantly is this - hubby would have to say yes again

...I'm going to go get sleep now!
