CAV SO Bones - Terran Force : Raptor, Falcon, Ryoshi, Tsukai and more

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

With the new CAV2 Kickstarter ongoing, this motivated me to start painting my Terran force from the 1st Kickstarter.
Paint job is my regular army "speed paint" quality, where I'm looking for the best look requiring the least amount of work.

I decided to go with a more "desert" look to get these miniatures to look somewhat like GDI unit, so they will look nice when pitted against my Nod-like Rach force.
(Rach Force: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/68610-cav-so-bones-rach-force-completed-reaper-voodoo-more).

I still have a lot to paint, but I'm happy how they turned out so far.

To be Continued...

Some time in the late 1990s I did an entire lizardman army for the fantasy wargame Raven by Harlequin miniatures. I am thinking of rebasing and touching up this army as a generic, system agnostic one. That army had some smaller raptors and also raptor riders.  The paint scheme here is similar to how I painted those lizardmen back in the day, so these raptors should fit right in with this army.

      44081: Raptor Hunting Pack (5)

The paint scheme is rather simple and quick to paint and does not really require much precision:
Deep green over black undercoat, followed by a heavy drybrush with a bottle green, such as Dark Angels Green or similar. Over this a lighter drybrush on the legs/arms and very very lightly on the belly and underside in general with an olive green such as 70.967 Vallejo Model Color Olive Green or the old citadel goblin green.

The back gets some reddish brown or terracotta, followed by a sandy yellow/ochre that leaves some of the reddish brown visible around the edges. On this a light drybrush with 70.976 Vallejo Model Color Buff or similar bone yellow colour.  Mix in some white for a final highlight if desired. Gloss black on claws, paint in the eyes as follows: the entire eyeball and eyesocket in black or something very dark. The eyeball in buff, then some transparent yellow (or citadel cassandora yellow shade) with some thinned transparent orange in the middle. When dry, a thin vertical line of black, followed by gloss varnish on only the eyeballs. Teeth in a light beige or whatever you like.
I made 45x30 oval bases for them.
I need to say that the Bones Black material is very good for PVC minis, and far superior to the regular white Bones material. But these minis have some questionable detailing around the hands and feet. Or should I say lumpy bits at the end of the legs? It would seem that the factory has maybe pulled a fast one on Reaper and the QC has let us all down on these specific minis by not spotting this and having it fixed before signing off on them.
I don't really mind all that much as the bits in question are for the most part hidden in the basing flockmix, but it is a bit frustrating knowing that they both could and should have had crisper details on the feet and hand claws.

Oi you lot! Gerroff my lawn!

Brief word of introduction. I know next to nil about CAV. My current interest in it is solely from a painting perspective. With that in mind, please excuse any blunders I make.

So, I'm a painter looking for some cool stuff to paint. I see CAV's mechs. I think "I like mechs, those look cool, I think I'll grab some". Then my eyes flicker upwards towards where it says "10mm scale". I think you can see where this is going.

Long story short, how big are these? It looks like they come on 1" hexes, and $4.99-$6.99 is quite a lot to charge for a small mini (in my opinion, of course).

      Many thanks, all!

I had painted a flail as a test model, and then decided to do a group since it was an easy color scheme.
had too many tags, but it's a pillager, wolverine, flail, outlaw, and poltergeist

So I finally fell into the temptation and got my first ground based sci fi minis!(I do have spaceships.)
A Cataphract, conquerer , and a halberd by Reaper minis came in with my horsman today! Sadly the halberd is missing a piece so it may in end up being returned.
So my first order of business was a small conversion to the cataphract
      Before conversion

And the conquerer has donated the necessary parts for said conversion, specifically his smaller missile pods.

A bit of work with an exacto knife removed said weapons.

And a bit more exacto work to make a spot for the pods on the Cataphract.

Some super glue to assemble the cataphract and voila! It is time for paint!

And don’t worry about the Conquerer, I have a conversion in mind for it too. It just might not be a true mech when I’m done.......

More sci-fi stuff to come soon I hope!
And maybe just maybe I’ll try to make a backstory for these guys.
      Thankyou for looking!
