This is such a cool idea!! Going through all of these is a real treat. I  just recently started to paint (Got the reaper LTP kit last Christmas) but I think I've improved since then. It's so cool to see how much I've improved and to know that I can only get better.

This was my first mini from the reaper learn to paint kit.

And finally these are my favorite figures so far. They're from the board game Arcadia Quest.

Battlemasters and HeroQuest were my gateway drugs in 1991. My weapons of availibility were testors and craft paints applied with secondhand cheap brushes and the tip of a sewing needle for eyes.

The ideas of washes, shading and highlighting were unknown mysteries.

The wizard was my first attempt at freehand.  I painted in spurts from this point to around 2004 when life interupted. The Mordheim Freelance Knight was one of the last minis I would paint until 2015.

I was using Citadel paints and brushes at this time and relied heavily on washes and drybrushing. My only thought to highlighting was to maybe hit the high points with the base color. Black wash was used on everything that wasn't skin.

In October of 2015, I was battling against a brain weasel attack and it dawned on me that I had reached a certain amount of stability and that getting back into painting was possible. So I raided the flgs for a couple boxes of Zombicide VIPS, a box of GW skeletons to harken back to my roots, and discovered something called Reaper Bones. Not only was I pleasently suprised that Reaper was still around, but that the Bones were well within my discretionary income. So I got a fistful of them, which I then proceeded to ruin due to the fact that I got impatient and once again resorted to priming them with Testors. (such is the cycle of life) I did eventually get them cleaned up and properly painted and they were gifted out to various coworkers.

I had gotten ahold of more citadel paints and some Reaper MSP but life and work kept interupting and it took me over a year to finish the skeletons and zombies. I had also discovered the forums during that time as whenever I googled the figure names looking for paint schemes it would lead me here, so I lurked until December 2016. Since then I've been able to meet or exceed the skill level I had in 2004 largely due to hanging around here and with the instructions from the Layer Up kit.

These are two of the Coffee Dwarves I've finished this week, who apparently don't like to be photographed. (perhaps they're camera shy due to unfinished bases)

Today marks the one year point for me of starting this Hobby.  Here is the very first thing I painted, the Skeleton from the Learn to Paint kits.

After completing the two Learn to Paint kits I painted this.  It's Rita Young from the Mansions of Madness board game.  This is the first thing I painted fully on my own, ie, no instructions to follow from the learn to paint books.

Fast forward a year and these are the most recent ones.  They are monsters from the Mansions of Madness game expansions and are what I'm currently most proud of.

I love this idea....here are mine.

First mini from early 2010. I picked up a box of Games Workshop Dwarf Rangers and some basic paints. I was too scared to do the eyes.

This mini is probably my favorite of all the minis I have ever done. I finished it in August 2013 I believe, shortly after my daughter started becoming more mobile and I quit painting for a good while.

This is one of my most recent minis since I started painting again in November 2019. I think I finished this guy up just before Christmas 2019.

Quite the journeys. Really love seeing how you guys improved over time. My first minis (lizardmen by GW) are lost in time and I don't own them anymore. Pictures sadly do not exist.

One of  my earliest photographed finished miniatures was this Rackham guardsman. I tried NMM the first time and it took ages to layer the shield. No wet pallette, just single wells and mixing every intermediary tone.  img40047c9d00019.jpg.8c18f3bbaf9c2c5d6ec6a78ab9972763.jpgimg40047d6aa6059.jpg.1a2720aaae8833df7ab5112520f1eb38.jpg

I think this must have been around 2005. I used a Scanner to take a pic of the mini...

Fast forward to today. I had a few breaks or focused on 15mm historicals. Only recently did I refocus on 28mm fantasy. With a baby in the house I got more motivation to finish stuff,  as I can't put it of anymore "Oh,  I will do it later". Nope,  either this evening or I have to wait for a cycle to complete.

Vlad is my current favourite and I believe I started the sculpting etc in 2016. Well,  he is undead so he won't mind a few years.

Since I started again I focus on contrast, speed and colour composition. Textures are also a thing I am working on.

And the most current project is Elladan Elven ranger,  pretty much a study in leather. My new mantra is: something new with each mini. IMG_20200222_010219.thumb.jpg.8159edd79a065d5ddefec7faf3baa5bf.jpg

He is almost finished. Mainly the base and some matte varnish.

Athak, Undead Knight is what I would consider my first finished project (finished him January 2019, after a few months of experimenting and watching vids).

This Tortle Adventurer I did for a local competition is probably the best indicator of my “progress”. Or maybe Juggs, who is my pride and joy.

I'm depressed I can't enter - my first figure was in 1984, and I have no clue whatever happened to it.

On the other hand, there is some seriously impressive growth and improvements throughout this thread!

But you could always tell us about it, show us your newer picture, and we’ll assume you’ve improved!

I can't find that I posted this picture in the thread, but as far as I know this giant was the first mini ever painted.  Painted him again in 2018  after finding a fresh version at reapercon.  1986 (ish)  vs 2018   there was at least 20 year break between my two phases of painting.  Although I cant call my self a new painter anymore either.

I tried painting the new guy in a red cloak, but my mind rebelled.

The original guy needs some help standing up - his base is severely battered.

the last is my latest giant.

Wow a very nice old historic repaint! The new one is great and the old one is slightly handicapable.
