So, my love affair with Star Wars died when I was a teenager and the prequels came out. It was a slow death, not fully happening until after Episode III and the Hayden Christiansen Replacement Special Editions,  but it happened. But I just saw a commercial on TV for Rogue One and my heart skipped a beat. I've been intentionally ignoring it up until now. I thought Force Awakens was just an okay movie, that was largely A New Hope all over again, rather than being the super-awesome-omg movie that so many people were saying it was. It served its purpose of rekindling a bit of the Star Wars love I used to have, but it didn't bring it to a full blaze or really inspire all that much hope that the future movies will be amazing. But the commercial I just saw stoked the flames pretty hard. It was helped by the fact that I'm starting to get into the X-Wing miniatures game, but it punched me right in the nostalgia so hard. AT-ATs. AT-STs. Space fights with X-Wings and TIE Fighters darting around Star Destroyers. REAL Stormtroopers. Grand Moff Tarkin. Mon Mothma. Darth Vader. Everything was aimed right for my nostalgia sack. So I went and watched the trailers finally, and I'm a bit pumped.

Also, kinda bummed that seemingly everyone has British/Australian accents. Not a big deal, I know, but not everyone has to have one. Most of the speaking roles in the OG trilogy didn't.

Ok... so oddities begin to unfold on Rogue One... or at least some firsts in the Star Wars saga...

First Star Wars movie without a John Williams soundtrack - Alexandre Desplat has composed this one

First Star Wars movie without an opening crawl.

Stay tuned for more...

You forget Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and its much-beloved sequel Ewoks: Battle for Endor.  Both of which had theatrical releases.

I clicked on this thread by accident but still managed to ruin it.  Behold my power.

That's it - we are locking you in a room, with nothing to watch except the Star Wars Holiday Special....

The Auld Grump - behold the power of the Dark Side....

I... I saw all of these in my youth. Though I only recall seeing the Ewok movies on television.

Until YouTube resurrected it, I wasn't sure the Holiday Special really existed or not. As a grown up, I haven't been able to watch all of it in one go.

Now the Star Wars cameos on Sesame Street or the Muppet Show, *that* was good entertainment.

Back to Rogue One. If the local theater follows last year's pattern with Ep. VII, there'll be an IMAX matinee showing, and I *might* be there. ^_^

Please, for the mercy of the goddess, no!

You made me sit through that once - locking somebody in with it would be cruel and unusual punishment!

It was worse than the prequels.

Chirrut Imwe still practiced the Jedi code to the best of his knowledge though.  I think it would be safe to say he would be a Jedi if he could, they just have been gone for so long at this point in the story.  Whether it was general knowledge that the Empire was destroying them, I don't know, but we do know that Jedi were far and few between even in the olden days.  And, wasn't he near the ruins of the Jedi temple when we meet him in the story?

Regardless, he was my favorite and completely unexpected character in the movie.

One thing I did find interesting about this movie was that when I bought the ticket on Fandango (cause, you don't take chances on Star Wars movies!!!), there was an option to show the mobile ticket at the door.  Being paranoid, I printed out a confirmation, but then showed them the mobile ticket at the concession stand (where we now usually buy tickets) and was told I just had to show it at the door.  Got to the door and showed the phone and she swiped to verify that it was in the app (I guess you could do a screenshot) to show the confirmation and we walked in.  For our backwoods theatre, that was pretty high tech!  Definitely the way to buy tickets in the future!  Plus, being able to use PayPal is a bonus.

I enjoyed the story, but not so much the characters.  I just didn't feel attached to them at the end of the movie.  Otherwise though I thought it was a solid movie.  On first viewing I didn't see any glaring issues regarding the plot, it actually fixes one of the oldest plot issues, and the motivations for the characters seem reasonable for the most part.  The space battle scenes were FREAKIN' AWESOME, always my favorite parts of a Star Wars flick.  And so many easter eggs and in-universe references. It's going to take a while to unpack all of them.

Why must Alan keep dying in movies that I like his character the most in the cast? Is he becoming the new Sean Bean?

Well the Jedi were not gone that long, 19 years IIRC. Probably within that character's living memory, if not an actual servant of the Jedi in some capacity at the time!

From what I understand is that the temple was the base from which khyber crystals were stored/mined/created, and the pair were Temple Guardians -- not full fledged Jedi, but Chirrut at least must have been somehow Force sensitive. So perhaps a Force Sensitive that for whatever reason was declined training in the Order, but his abilities were still valuable as a Temple Guardian.

Damon.

Didn't realize Atlantis had a 'known' layout, but yeah, that's eerily similar.

Saw it last night, IMAX 3d, and it was amazing. Nice to have a force user character that isn't a jedi or a sith for once in the movies!

Description from Pluto. Pretty interesting read too.

I really hope they expand more on the Guardian of Whills
