Star Wars: Rogue One

I enjoyed the story, but not so much the characters.  I just didn't feel attached to them at the end of the movie.  Otherwise though I thought it was a solid movie.  On first viewing I didn't see any glaring issues regarding the plot, it actually fixes one of the oldest plot issues, and the motivations for the characters seem reasonable for the most part.  The space battle scenes were FREAKIN' AWESOME, always my favorite parts of a Star Wars flick.  And so many easter eggs and in-universe references. It's going to take a while to unpack all of them.

I think this depends on what you know of the backstory going in. I felt the same way, but I had a pretty good idea how things would be wrapped up. My daughter - not so much. She was verbally upset regarding how things ended on Scarif.

Why must Alan keep dying in movies that I like his character the most in the cast? Is he becoming the new Sean Bean?

He survives Moana

But he does death in such epically remembered ways!  He is awesome at dying!

Not that anyone had an exemption card in THIS movie!  But his was the best, IMHO.

I saw it on Saturday with my best mate, we both loved it.  I was more surprised by the outcome than he was.

I remember coming out of the Force Awakens on a real emotional high, the feeling after Rogue One was different - there was so much going on in the last 30 mins that I need to see it again to determine whether I liked it more or less than the Force Awakens.

So...

Wow, Vader at the height of his Sith Bad-Elf-ery is rather terrifying!

CGI Tarkin... didn't actually bother me that much. I think the tech is almost there to be seamless.

It was good seeing the Empire's callous disregard for life. Really firmly showing that they are the evil empire. And the deathstar destroying "just" a single city? I have to imagine that level of power would still cause MASSIVE problems around the rest of the world.

I kinda wish more any of the group that joins up with Jyn had been female, but it was nice to see all the female pilots.

'Just a single city' actually seemed like a rather large chunk of a continent. There would definitely be global repercussions, and probably cooling of the entire world. The debris was flying off into space, so there must have been a ridiculous amount of dust in the upper atmosphere.

(Do we really need spoilers in a thread dedicated to a movie? It should be an obvious thread to avoid if you're not looking for spoilers...)

Edited in spoiler tags.

Yes, because people use the "Next Unread Thread" button, and can spoil themselves accidentally.

As planned, I saw it last Friday in a matinee showing in IMAX.

I liked it, but don't know if I loved it. The first half felt more like a TV adaptation than a big screen one. Like Beagle, I'll need to see it again to absorb everything that I may have missed. I may develop a greater appreciation of it afterwards.

As for the Easter Eggs, there were oodles of 'em! One that surprised me was linked to the Star Wars: Rebels 3D CGI show.

At the rebel base, there was a call for *General* Syndulla, currently a captain in the TV series.

I saw this last night with my son. I really enjoyed it. I thought the characters were more interesting than Force Awakens. They were not Instantly bonded and it felt like they were more naturally interacting with each other than "hey we just met, Lets be best friends". Of course all of the tech and fight scenes were beautiful. I really liked that while we had cameos, but nothing rammed down the throat like look we have this... This was cool in the first one so its cool now right... right?

Anyway, this may be my favorite. Not Force heavy, multiple characters to like, without being too many to keep track of... Well done.

I would like to thank everyone for using spoiler tags.

The wife and I watched this earlier today.  While I had heard a little about some of the cameos, which I don't normally consider to be spoiler territory, it was great to be going in fresh.

It was a wild ride, and I've had to explain some of the Easter eggs, but we both really enjoyed it and felt it added a great deal to the universe and movies as they currently exist.
