Base Boss by Reaper

Yup, infinity madness here.

A lot of the larger minis have been officially moved to the 55mm bases sizes, I have 17 that need to be re-based in one army alone.

I also like to do some of my nicer minis/display pieces on a slightly larger than 40mm base and 55 is a nice size it seems.

I would be interested in clear bases, mostly to go with the flight pegs. The lettering doesn't bother me too much, but it does detract a little. I had been looking at the CAV ones, but they're a bit big for normal RPG purposes. Colored bases wouldn't really be my thing, but I'm interested in the display ones and the new shape.

My biggest peeve with the existing round gaming bases is that they're really quite deep so I keep needing to bulk up the bottom of whatever I try to put in there. Plus I have to smooth the rough edges with a knife since I pretty much am always using them upside down. I like the look of the new ones. ^_^

There's a lot of suggestions for new base sizes, shapes, and styles that aren't currently in the Pledge Manager, and our more enthusiastic fans are responding with comments along the lines of "This is just pre-launch, wait until the thing launches and Reaper showcases all of the awesome!".

We'd like to respond to both of those comments.

The BaseBoss project and product line is not like Bones. This project is being presented as much more of a "WSYWIG" (What You See Is What You Get) project. That is, we're introducing 17 new base styles/sizes/shapes. We're introducing them all at day one - because we've already invested most of the money needed to make this project happen up front. There's not really any stretch goals, and not really any new items (although this isn't entirely true, but more on that below the quotes). We're not going to be introducing 17 new bases and then at funding introduce a Stretch Goal for even more new styles, new shapes, or whatever.

Making the tools, and then freighting them to the US, would introduce time delays, and we really are trying to do this one in-house and on-time. New molds which haven't been already planned for just aren't truly in the cards.

What about a hex base bigger than 1inch? Or bases in other colors? like green or transparent purple?

Hmm.. If I could get clear 25mm Square bases I'd very likely switch over to Reaper for all of our basing needs.

Now, this is something we've been playing with. We've been experimenting with color and transparency options since we started making the clear and colored weapons for Bones 3 on-site.

74023_CLR.jpg

This is our standard 74023 base - the one that comes with our Chronoscope models. Mostly presented just to show you what I'm talking about.

So what we'd really like to know is; Among all of the base options in the BaseBoss Pledge Manager, which ones would you most like to see in clear? And if we made colors available, we believe the logistics of offering Clear, Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Purple and Black over ~40 SKUs would introduce over 250 new parts for us to have to store and track sales of individually - but which colors, exactly, in which sizes, exactly, would be worth it? Would a red 74035 be ok, but a red 74071 not be up your alley?

Whaddya say?

I'd want 25mm Square, without the slot, in clear.

With the slot (for flight stands) would be something I'd want in the future (when we do a flying model).

I'd also prefer it without any lettering/to be crystal clear, but its not a complete deal breaker.

I wonder how feasible it would be to sell the clear bases on sprues with the lettering on the sprues. That is basically how resin minis work, with the lettering on the base tab that is often removed anyway.

It would require very little work on the part of the purchaser, but seems like a fair trade for a more transparent final base. If they were small, like sets of four per sprue, they'd be small enough for most purchasers/package size. I think there is a market for the fully transparent base, the clearer the better.

just to put in my 2 cents.

I would be very interested in 74035 in clear. lettering would not be an issue, as my plan is to flip them upside down fill the bottom with a little sand, place the mini on the sand, then fill the rest of the base with water effects to the lip. that way the clear base provides a solid rim to hold in the water stuff, and protect it from damage

Not a huge deal, but it's a shame that out of all the new bases, there's no love for the RPG-style bases (flat, not angled side) that we had in the Bones kickstarters.

Check out

74035 Black Flat No Slot Round 25mm RPG x 12 $2

74036 Black Flat No Slot Round 50mm RPG x 8 $3

74037 Black Flat No Slot Round 75mm RPG x 22 $2

Aren't those just the existing 1"-3" RPG bases?

I think so. Either way I'll probably go after those. I'm not a fan of the Dark Age/Warmachine style base. Thou I may go after some slotted bases as I've acquired many pathfinder minis put of the Boneyard at ReaperCon over the years.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by mold on demand. Are you asking about the idea of os putting a stock number on the site and then producing it only when it is actually sold? Or producing the minimum viable amount and only restocking when sold?

There's a lot of factors, not the least of which are the time to change a mold, and the time to change the material. Changing the mold is the far far easier of the two, and takes also the least amount of time. Changing the material ... this is not a simple nor a quick process. As such, the minimum run to make it worth changing a mold over is a very different number than the minimum needed to ask our laborers to change the barrel. A Mold run minimum is measured in at least 4-6 hours, a material run minimum is measured in plural days. (meaning we could conceivably run 2 molds in one 8 hour shift, but would be very unlikely to run more than 2 colors in an entire week- and honestly, more like 1 color per week)

then producing it only when it is actually sold <This

And the second paragraph means that the minimum order for a specialized colored base would be out of reach for almost all. Thank you for the material run insight.

Wyrd makes some translucent colored bases, I don't know that you'd really be filling a need there unless it was colors they don't provide and taking on the additional SKUs and headache of such..

I'm not the target market here because i only go buy bases if I need them and I'm pretty stocked up on them at the moment.. I'll definitely promote the heck out of it though

Yeah. I suspect this is more appealing to people who are expecting delivery of hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of KS figures this fall.

or who play games involving large armies, or who have very extensive shelves of unpainted models...
