Chrome
Gunfighter, you can only buy the Starter Box in stores, Reaper isn't selling it online. Give your FLGS the Reaper product # and they should be able to order it for you through their distributor.
Gardensnake
Actually I think the idea of CAV starter sets is an excellent idea. I will concede that being able to buy the CAVS of your choice and build your army how you want it is superior to getting prepackaged figures in a starter set, but it is a starter set. Businesses need to explore multiple avenues of getting their product into consumers hands. While a starter set may not be right for everyone, making it available to the ones that it is right for is good business. William
nadinbrzezinski
they are very effective for people who do not have anything... though I wihsh they chose better quality boxes, but that is me.
Erion
Meh. The box does what it needs to in terms of transporting the minis to the purchaser. However, once the models are assembled they're not really going to fit into a box that size anyway. Packaging thickness is generally low on the list of things I'm looking for when I'm sizing up a new game system.
Gunfighter
Hi . Erion, I'm in the Atlanta area. only 2 stores carry Cav (that I know of) one said he didn't have enough movement or interest for the starter set. the other didn't know about it (the 1st time I called) after I saw this thread I phoned back after work and got a different person who said he knew about the starter set but did not know whether they didn't carry it or simply didn't have one then. Chrome, thanks for the info on the on-line store, I wish Reaper had it available there because both stores that carry Cav around here are 40+ miles from my home. I agree with what has been said about the boxed sets put out by that "other" game company and while I am very guilty of buying them just because I get a full unit at one time, I still like to get blister packs for greater variety. Having said that, (deep breath) I would like to see UCOR specific sets, FACTION specific sets (ie terran section w/ syram and mitso-ta equipment), and even unit specific sets complete w/ decals. Archaon
Somewhere in this topic therew is a list of what it containts (I think it was the rulebook and 4 CAV?), why not just order the contents seperately from the online store?
Chrome
Somewhere in this topic therew is a list of what it containts (I think it was the rulebook and 4 CAV?), why not just order the contents seperately from the online store? Because the starter set is $40 and the cost of buying all of that seperately is $80. That's also why Reaper can't/won't sell them online, b/c they'd be cutting the legs out from underneath the retailors, and unlike some other large companies, Reaper cares about it's brick and mortar clients. Human-Machine
Because the starter set is $40 and the cost of buying all of that seperately is $80. Yeah, but the rulebook provided- A) Will become essentially obsolete with 3rd Printing. B) Is easily replaced by the free downloadable rules (fluff not included, of course). Besides, the CAV selections provided therein are horrible! I say it would have been much more reasonable for Reaper to release a starter army that included the downloadable rules, and a healthy selection of not just CAVs, but combined arms. Such a starter could easily be $40 MSRP and Reaper would not have to discount. Example: 1x Dictator Blister 1x Specter Blister 1x Tsuseki Blister 1x Hedghog Blister 1x Heavy Infantry Blister Plus all the dime-a-dozen dice you need and a dollar store tape measure. Heck, you could even be sassy and provide paper cut out AOE templates that that'll cost you, what, $.10 off of a color copier? Then they can take the money they save and get a real CAV box to go with that CAV starter army... Not a Dark Haven Dragon Box. That's all I'm trying to say... Chrome
A) Will become essentially obsolete with 3rd Printing. That's not much of an argument for not putting the rulebook in a starter box. 2nd printing rulebooks are what are for sale now, so they're what are put in the starter kits. When 3rd print comes out, the starter boxes will have 3rd print rulebooks. B) Is easily replaced by the free downloadable rules (fluff not included, of course). Most gamers want the fluff though and there's only one way to get it. So if you're new to CAV and don't have the book, what better way to get it than with an deck of CAV cards and some almost free models? Besides, the CAV selections provided therein are horrible! They're so horrible that you used 2 of them in your suggested starter set. Meanwhile the 3rd one is one of the most popular CAVs in existance, which just leaves the Puma, which isn't horrible by any definition of the word. IMO the selection gives the player a great building block for his army, providing him with a super-heavy, a superiority CAV, a fire-support model and a recon model. Could they have stuck an aircraft or tank in the mix? Yes. But most new players are interested in the CAVs, not the other models, so that's what Reaper put in there. Then they can take the money they save and get a real CAV box to go with that CAV starter army... Not a Dark Haven Dragon Box.Mike, you know as well as anyone that the idea of a starter set isn't (or at least shouldn't be) to get rich off of. Its to get people who are interested in the game a cheap way to get into it and get playing. Anyone who knows what CAV stuff they want to buy can go online and find it for 20% off. This caters to the player who wants to give the game a whirl but not lose his shirt in the process.
SuMicus
I'm in Erion's gaming Crew... 'Ohhhhhh, great Erion...' 'Erion, Erion' **That was the crowds starting to chat... Not commenting on the soon to be obsolete Rule Book. But the Starter set is a great deal on what you get... I see it, as a great way to build my Army..heheheheeeeee... My main CAVs is Pumas and Dictators... (I love the Dictator Model!) New Players buy the Set and please send the CAVs my way!!! I might use the Dictator 70 as a Sub Heavy in my Sections... Erion
"Do you ever have that dream where you're standing on a pyramid in sort of sun-god robes surrounded by a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?" But seriously, the starter box has been an excellent tool here for getting people interested in the game. The FLGS is keeping two of them in stock at all times right now, they've been moving so well.
