If there's still an opening when it gets closer to game night, I might jump in - is there a deadline for signing up?
TheAuldGrump
Kids game cancelled for the snow. Last session in the grown up adult more mature game with older players they managed to close the Hellmouth, and the paladin now has his Hackmaster +12 Holy Avenger - or will after it is cleansed. (Soaking in Hell is bad for holy weapons... who knew?). And they are talking about resurrecting the paladin's corpse that they retrieved from Hell as well (she is also going to need ritual cleansing - soaking in Hell is bad for paladins... who knew?). I don't remember if you are on FB or not. That's where the whole thing is run off of.

I even said that to you! I have not played as many versions of D&D as Grump, but I am really enjoying Pathfinder. I come up with an idea, then ask Grumpy how to do it. Grumpy sits down with the computer and makes DOZENS of characters that he will never get to play, but I like my Ask The Grump method better. :P
TheAuldGrump
Getting somebody else to generate your character works for every system, except maybe for TWERPS. The Auld Grump

The Auld Grump It seems to me that it's almost mandatory for GURPS. Or at least it is until you have a strong grasp of the system and how exactly the game you're in is being run. I tried building a character using the GURPS books and when I went back and added together everything on my sheet I somehow had a point total that was almost double what I had spent by following the directions. And when I tried to figure it out I couldn't find where I went wrong. So I started over, and the same thing happened again. And that was when I decided to basically give up on the system. BlazingTornado
How should I deal with an indecisive player who gets bored with characters or just makes terrible builds? Guy's on his fourth character now, not counting the three times he changed up his new character since Saturday. Useless half-elf warlock (pact of the blade, tried to make a glaive-swinging frontliner but didn't bother prioritizing strength in any way), then wanted a Goliath fighter, then a Goliath barbarian, then settled on a transmutation gnome wizard and god knows how long before he gets bored of THAT. I was pretty keen on getting a martial though. Party's been lacking a good meatshield.
Unruly
How long is he sticking with each character? If he's only giving them a session or two, he may be changing them because he isn't giving himself time to learn exactly what they can do and doesn't feel like he's able to do what he wants to do. I know when I start up a new character it takes me 5 or 6 sessions to really get a feel for how to play them unless it's something I've played extensively before. And even then, the same casting class can feel very different depending on what spells you take.
BlazingTornado
Think it's been four sessions with Warlock #2. He's just not getting what he wants out of it. He's a modern vidya gamer or something so he doesn't want a character who's bad at things... So despite the need for strength for a glaive-wielding warlock... it was still his dump stat. And thus, he misses and misses and misses. Warlock #1 lasted a bit but called it quits when he realized he couldn't be "the arcane knowledge guy" because Int isn't his primary stat, and there's a lore bard in the group. Sailor Monk lasted about the second half of Keep on the Borderlands and then he just kinda got bored of it.
VitM
Ask him what he wants his character to do and then just make him one that does that? It sounds like he wants to fill a function for the group that nobody else can (e.g. the lore bard and arcane knowledge) without simply being the guy that gets punched in the face while everyone else does the cool stuff (e.g. the meat shield).

That kind of thing is why I prefer to have people build characters as a group ... then there are no questions or confusions about who is handling which niche and where the synergy that occasionally lets everybody pull off a DC ridiculous check comes from. There's always going to be that thing that comes up that nobody thought of, but usually, there's no 'what do you mean, /animated tank/?! I thought this was going to be mythology!' confusions.... People who come in late tend to find themselves getting V's solution, although we tend to have a stack of suitable sheets laid by, rather than knocking one out on the fly. ^^; If there is another way to do it, I'm always looking for alternatives. Blaze, I am, admittedly, under the impression that you've been talking to your video gamer; that's usually the first step. Find the disconnect and address it, and then see how it goes.
TheAuldGrump
Heh, then there is the joy of random, random character generation - where the player doesn't even choose the profession/class. (Congratulations, you have *roll* a rat catcher.... Always a joy in WHFRP.) The Auld Grump - or Traveller, where your character might die during character generation....
TheAuldGrump
I tested the goblin chase scene with the adult players as the guinea pigs.... Sure enough, Broderick the Barbarian chased the goblin into the swamp - and as a red herring I used the chase rules.... And then a black dragon snapped up the gobbo in one bite, and started after the barbarian.... And I started running the exact same chase cards, backwards, as Broderick beat feet back to the party. I alternated three rounds of combat with the main party with a round of chase - out in the open, rather than separate rooms, so once the dragon started chasing the barbarian, the players - but not the party - knew what was coming.... I look forward to doing the same thing to the kids - with a younger black dragon. And having a Bonesium Ebonwrath made this scne possible. The Auld Grump - I think that I am using dragons about three or four times as often, just because of the Bones.

(Congratulations, you have *roll* a rat catcher.... Always a joy in WHFRP.) I've lived with the other extreme. Players who always play the same character concept, over and over and over again. Most often, it's big male players who play tough warrior chicks with swords, or tough biker chicks with guns. And I use the term "chick" and not female, because their characters' temper and personality is quite atypical of women.
