Bruce Campbell used to come into the Border's Books I was working at, now and again. About two or three times a year. The last time because he was promoting a book. All other times because he wanted something to read. You could never predict what.

This is in Maine, and I know that Grump also knows him, so I am guessing he has people in these parts?

Not 'know' exactly - but one of my fellow teachers at the Festival knew him well enough that he came to talk to the kids during the festival. (James Cagney... I wonder why somebody with that name would get into cult films....)

I will admit that Mr. Campbell was a very enthusiastic speaker.

I don't mind black powder. I haven't really found a good supplement for LL for archaic firearms though.

I've decided that I think I need to run Keep on the Borderlands at least one time. So i'm trying to finagle some friends into a monthly game.

I ran it but it's pretty clear it wasn't made for the 5th Edition type of level advancement.

(but I guess at least Clerics get their spellcasting earlier)

Speaking of, despite no noise from WOTC or Goodman Games about it, it wasn't ready for Gencon and was pushed back to a November release. Had to go internet sleuthing to find that out.

(hope I'm allowed to post non-vendor links)

For me the acceptability of firearms in a game is all about genre emulation.  If I am playing a pirate game, single shot firearms are very much part of the genre.  OTOH, if I am playing a game set in ancient Greece firearms feel out of place, just as jet fighters and an armada from Alpha Centauri do.

Oh god I didn't imagine a Roper would so severely wreck my adventuring party. He's already got half of em grappled, restrained and at below half hit points... and one of the adventurers not in its grasp has a cursed Berserker handaxe that imposes penalties on all weapon attacks not done with it....

This thing is of a challenge rating one level lower than the party's current level.

Long, long ago, starting back in White Dwarf #1 and #2, they had what they called The Monster Mark - how many rounds a monster could stand there while a first level fighter hit it with a sword, and how much damage it could deal in that same amount of time.

The Roper was a pure brute - way, way above what its HP would indicate.

The Auld Grump - I still calculate the MM sometimes....

Exactly.

A 1st level fighter (in OD&D) needed a 20 to hit, and did a d8 damage with a longsword -  so he was doing ((1+8)/2)0.5 every round. So, while it did not have that many hit points, it took a while to chew through them.

Sadly, I can't find any site with the whole kit & kaboodle, but I did find this excerpt -

wd1monstermark.jpg

White Dwarf used the Monster Mark into the mid eighties, I think - especially on their own critters. It was the first real attempt to calculate how lethal monsters were, instead of E.G.G.'s seat of the pants 'Well, it's got X HD'....

And it broke down with things like paralysis and petrification.

The Auld Grump - who remembers the days when both White Dwarf and The Dragon had nudity.... (Hey, why do you think that guy had an AC10?)

Tonight's exciting episode - finishing up character generation for the first of the temp games.

Followed by 'It was a Dark and Stormy Night' - as the party is traveling while the night falls and the weather turns to sleet and freezing rain.

And, at some point, they are going to have to get down a narrow path against a cliff in that weather... The mules (if they have any) are going to refuse, unless somebody gets an incredibly high Handle Animals roll.... (And the mules are right - both time somebody has managed, the mules have failed their Climb roll, and gone to the bottom of the cliff very quickly.... Taking the person that made that incredible roll with them.)

*EDIT* Most often, people have the common sense to leave the mules behind.... But once in a blue moon, somebody thinks that it will be easy....

The Auld Grump - Take 2D6 from the fall*, and 3D6 from the mule landing on top of you....

* If they fall without having a mule to worry about, they are allowed a REF save for half damage - it is steep, but not 90 degrees of steep....

One of my most memorable D&D encounters was my group trying to cross a rope bridge above a canyon. It was a DC10.

By the end of the challenge, every member of the group had gone over the side of the bridge.

We've split the party again.

This is going to end well.

Half of us are heading out of the city, into Shoanti lands.

Half of us are hiding in Old Korvosa.

I'm an urban witch, guess which half I'm with?

Never ever let the barbarian make decisions for the party!

The CLERIC is the healer that is staying in town.

My neighbor is offering to run a short D&D campaign over the winter. If it was any other version of D&D, I'd probably pass, but it's 4E and I get to play with power cards again and don't have to worry about accidentally creating a garbage build.

5th edition is also really good at avoiding garbage build. You basically have to deliberately try and make one...

(which I've seen happen, mind you)
