so I place an order with the river site, and have been having fun tracking it's trip across the country...

Yes!  Just two weeks ago, I ordered my kin something from the same river site.  It left Phoenix, AZ, arrived in Des Moines, IA, arrived in Portland, ME, back to somewhere in KY, somewhere in OK, finally arriving at my folks house in Kansas City, KS.  It did NOT arrive in the two day delivery period, but, the box was undamaged and intact, so, no harm no foul.  Kind of fun to watch those sometimes.

Just seems kind of silly that once it gets to a major city, that it can't go to the nearest major city closest to the delivery point, and then down the chain....

 

I have ordered stuff from within NY, and had it travel to other states, then come back....

Looks like George's package was sent UPS.

 

UPS has a hub in Louisville, KY, so most stuff sent any distance goes through there. (FedEx is in Memphis, btw.)

 

It's a pretty standard hub and spokes system that is not that different from what the USPS uses, though the post office has more hubs.

I know you said no harm no foul, but if they don't make the guaranteed delivery date, you are eligible for a free month of Prime service. I ended up with 6 free months one Christmas due to this fact. (there is a maximum number of free months you can be credited this way per year IIRC)

I would expect Origin ==> Hub ==> Hub ==> Destination out of a hubs and spokes system.

 

That sequence sounds like the result of a messed up bar code.

Keep in mind that recent storms are playing havoc with all delivery services, Post Office, FedEx, UPS, everyone.

 

As a person who once worked for FedEx, and who has worked many years tracking shipments in various jobs, I can tell you that the way things move usually makes more sense behind the scenes than it does to the casual observer.

 

But what the OP is seeing here, is likely the result of flooding and storms making landfall, forcing re-routing of flights and trucks.

 

The news is your friend.

We once watched a UPS package come from the east coast to the regional hub, get scanned and sent to Utah, where they realized it was destined for Kansas. It got sent back to our hub, which would scan it and send it back to Utah.  This went on for about 10 days before we were able to get ahold of a real person who went looking for the physical box and fixed the issue.

I really enjoy tracking my packages; it's one of the few technological innovations I whole-heartedly embrace.

 

I occasionally order stuff from a place in St. Louis.  It travels east through Indianapolis, then south to Louisville.  And then back north to Indianapolis so it can be delivered to me.  Some day I want to stand on an overpass with a sign that says "Deliver package for Workshop HERE."  It'd save about three days.

My latest package from HassleFree came with a 'missent to Thailand' stamp on it.

What worries me themost is that someone actually found the need to make such a stamp...

I once had a package bounce back and forth between baltimore and somewhere in NJ 3 times before it finally made it to my door.

I almost forgot . . . .

My wife bought some cheap jewelry from an unnamed country in the Eastern Hemisphere.  She waited and waited . . . no package.  The sender didn't have a tracking number, of course.

 

After about two months, we got a part of the shipping label.  Just a part, mind you.  No package, just about half the label.  Apparently it bounced around Great Britain for a while because the sender thought "UK" and "USA" were the same thing . . . .

 

We never did get the package, but we did get a refund.  And my wife got an earful from me about ordering $5 in jewelry from someplace near Thailand she'd never heard of.

When I order from Reaper/Dallas area, it's great fun to watch it go along IH35 from Dallas (210 miles north), to San Antonio (90 miles south), back north to Austin (10 miles west) before getting to me.
