knarthex
Hey folks! I am looking for a small digital camera to take to Reaper Con with me... Ideally, It will be able to take pics of minis from pretty close, as well as pics of all the folks there.... I am not looking to spend lots of money.... >$150 or so max.... Looking at a camera with a focal length of 28-224mm.... (Canon Silver PowerShot ELPH 180 Digital Camera with 20 Megapixels and 8x Optical Zoom) will that allow a macro style shot of a mini? Thanks! Cranky Dog
ub3r's comment has merit. Practically all smart phones made in the past five years have cameras on them that rival compact cameras. And all digital cameras are good for macro shots. LittleBluberry
I'm not sure about the merits of whatever other photography devices you have, but I'm pretty sure that the Canon ELPH line all has macro mode. I've got an older one and it was standard then. (The little flower icon apparently means macro mode, and it auto-detects it for me just fine.) That said, my old cell phone had an amazing camera and was just fine for most purposes. But it was a phone where the camera was a major feature. ub3r_n3rd
Wasn't sure about carrying the tablet around... Phone is Galaxy S4... Your Galaxy S4 is more than good enough - Cameras. Samsung Galaxy S4: 13MP rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash and HD 1080p video recording, 2MP front-facing camera.
Doug Sundseth
Wasn't sure about carrying the tablet around... Phone is Galaxy S4... As long as there's enough light*, the camera in the S4 should be fine. It has a very short focal length (probably in the 2.4mm range), which means that it has a very short hyperfocal distance and a very deep depth of field even inside the hyperfocal distance. It also has enough resolution to get a decent amount of detail. * Cell phone sensors start to have serious noise problems in low light. But if there's enough light and a stable platform (consider getting a cell-phone tripod adapter like the "Square Jellyfish" and a small tripod on which to place it), you can get very nice results from any modern phone.
Heisler
Although if you are thinking of using it in the contest room, please use a tripod and avoid putting anything extra on the contest tables. We don't want contest miniatures knocked around or knocked off the table by anyone trying to use some kind of stabilizer directly on the table. The miniatures are already in enough danger from me as it is.
Matbar
I have a Galaxy S4 and the only "issue" is that it sometimes makes my minis look shinier than they are. However, that's extreme close up conditions with very little in the way of proper backgrounds and lighting. I'd say use the next week or so taking snaps with it and see what you think of the results. I find mine more than sufficient for most things. It even has a reasonable zoom feature, though you have to practice a bit with the auto-focus.
