Jewelry box raid! Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

So I got the "clear out and organize bug" today, and decided to start clearing out my hordes of costume jewelry. Right as I was about to pitch all of it, I realized that a lot of it could really come in handy if I deconstructed items (and still save space.) So I pulled out some pliers and wire snips and went to town on it. I've made a total mess of the kitchen table, but halfway in I think I've got quite a bit of potential piled up here. I'm going to post more pics in the comments, since my phone doesn't seem to be cooperating. I'm thinking the little gold wheels could be shields if backed, and the tiny crystal gems are screaming at me to do something with them. But a lot of this stuff doesn't say much more to me than "I could absolutely use this for something!..." I'm still very new to mini painting, and I haven't tried my hand at basing at all yet, but I'm getting more and more interested in basing and terrain. Does anyone have any suggestions for putting some of this stuff to good use? I want to work on both sci-fi and fantasy themes, as well as trying something more steampunky, and any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks! And now, back to snipping. :D

You can use a lot of stuff for basing or enhancing minis.

I spot chains.

Those are awesome, you can use those in any Scifi, Modern, Chaos or Undead setting easily.

All those little beads and stones( purple gems?) can be used on bases, maybe they're gems or paint them up as rocks.

Maybe you can turn the bulbs ( pearls???) into plants or lanterns.

Some Steampunk stuff could be made with the other parts.

Just look at the shape of things not what they are now, but what they could be.

Envision them painted or even glued together.

Clump those pearl like beads together in a mass, and you might have some weird alien plantlife or maybe floating spores ...

I have done this.

Uses:

Dragon hoard

Treasure piles

Staff toppers

Magic items

Pins for pinning minis

Steampunk bases

High-tech doors

Steampunk/low tech cogs for mechanisms

Jewel golem

Lots of uses...

Spell effects.  I saw someone make an amazing wizard effect using a big ol' hoop earring with filigree bits.

The chains could also be used as reins for various riding beasts--orcs and such would use 'em for sure.

Also, chains as dungeon dressing.

A few closeups. Now that everyone is home, it's turning into a group affair 😂

I posted this via mobile, so I'm not sure how the photo posts are going to turn out. I'll pop a spoiler tag on them if they got all messed up!

Those cirles in the last pic?

Maybe cut the rings off, and make wheels out of those for some small cart or chariot?

Or make Chaos shields or symbols out of them.

What they said.

Those little straight wood pieces look like bamboo. You could make a bamboo floor out of them or stick them straight in some water effects on the side of a pond or stream.

These ideas are fantastic. I may end up making bases before I paint minis for them. 😒 I keep looking at those green stone pieces, and I'm wondering if they can be repurposed into a stonehenge-ish setting? I have a cleric mini that's druidic enough to go in it too... the list of ideas is growing, and there's probably little chance I'll get to 3/4 of it >__<

You could also mount them on the end of something; instant magical staff.

Basing is my favorite. As far as growing ideas and little chance of finishing most of it...welcome to the hobby. ;-)

Seriously, if you have the space once you bag it up or put it in small containers, keep it all.  I have boxes of all kinds of little random bits.  What happens is I'll be working on something, and it will trigger a "hey, I think I remember having the perfect bit" memory.  Once you've thrown it out, too late.

Also if you're going to ReaperCon or do any of the exchanges, unique things that you've cannibalized from something else go over pretty well.  I still have some random thin bits of wood someone had cut into interesting shapes and put into the exchange box.  I've got old watches with small bits, and I raided the heck out of the fingernail junk section at the dollar store, and a bit on Amazon.  I've got bits of wood and moss covered sticks, sand, etc. as well as the bought basing materials like real water and snow effects.  Plus a boatload of blank bases, and fancy bases I bought when they were 75 - 90 percent off.  All of this fits in two organizers that are only 6 x 9 inches across, and maybe 12 inches high.

Those fake[?] pearl spheres are spell effects if attached to a figure's hand. Or crystal balls if not. Or stacked in a triangle: cannon balls.

Those gold toned things if painted differently and hung on s tavern wall = dart board.

Somebody already mentioned: never toss fine chain.

Second pic, those S-curved wires on the right... They can be straightened slightly so the loops aren't uniform and all the same size, and  have heads added with greenstuff or glue, and become snakes.

That butterfly on the end of a long spike: If the spike is thin enough that is a posh and stylish paint clog removal tool.
