Do you have a book on drawing the knotwork? I have one that was discarded from the library and it's a real brain-bender to do right. So far I only tried one fairly simple design:

No book, I'm googling it.

But there IS a bookmarket today...who knows...

Oh well...practice practice...back to the drawing board..

EDIT:

Nothing on the Bookmarket today.

I did acquire glitter though..

A friend who did lots of Celtic knotwork for other types of art recommended Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction by George Bain.  It's a great reference work, with information about the "traditional" knotwork, circular knotwork, keyhole knotwork . . . pretty much everything.  Great price right now via Amazon, too.  It is really meant for larger scale stuff than what we do with miniatures, but I've had my copy for twenty-five years and have never regretted it.

Woohoo Thanks!

I'll see if I can order that somewhere ( Dutch here).

EDIT: WOOT! Just found it on PDF...printing as we speak...

I have two Viking busts with nice large shields and I ordered a 75mm Mounted Celt Warrior..

This will come in handy for sure.

Another question people... I've seen some Celt/Gauls wearing plaids, those were painted as if the really looked like plaid.

Sort of shading / stippling to make the cloth look like plaid.

Does anyone know how to do that?

I mean stuff like this:

Look at the green squares...

How do you get that effect?

Was that the eu org site?

If so, I'm not certain this is a legal download.

(Actually, I'm pretty certain it breaks a copyright rule or two)

So, yeah, I'm getting the softcover edition on the river site.

They even have a Kindle edition...

I will check that out, for now I printed out a few pages I can use.

Do want to get my hands on a full copy though.

Now to find more like this, maybe something like runic/Viking drawings too.

Very useful information people, thank you!

Yeah, that's the book I have. I meant to go find it, but my den is still torn up until I can paint the closet and build some new shelves :/

I got quite a few suggestions for runic and other art when I placed the book in my riversite shopping cart...

Riversite brings up many different stores / sites.

And I'm Dutch. Will have to see if someone offers this in the EU.

I did print some pages from the PDF I thought useful for now, but I prefer a good book for real.

That and the author deserves the royalties...

EDIT: Hmmm There are some books on the subject on the bay of evil...

He means Amazon. I don't know why people stopped saying Amazon.

Ah Thx!!!

In the meanwhile I found several books on this topic on the evilbay...

Now to search for some more reviews to see which one I will get.

The book you mentioned is there too, but not in whole.

It seems they have broken it down into several smaller paperbacks.

So a book for the knotwork borders, a book for the animals etc etc...

Very cool!

I appreciate all the input in this thread!

I've been painting for decades, but the last 3 years I've learned more than ever, thx to this forum.

I've been learning and pushing my painting thanks to this forum too.  I can see how much further I have to go when I see some of the detailed patterns some of you are able to put into your designs.

I really painted for decades, pre-internet, only reading some magazines about it, nobody in the area to help.

Came a long way though due to Military modelling etc.

But when Internet came the world opened.

Learned a few things...

Then I joined the forum ( 2013 not 2015 as my profile says...there was a problem)  and I learned a lot more fast.

people here are very helpful contradictory to most other forums I had visited.

And we challenge each other in a nice way.

Also people here do take the time to like and comment on posted minis.

I have posted minis on other sites before and only the incrowd talked and commented to each other.

Here you get motivated to paint more.

Not only did I learn more here, I also got more productive.

And I even got into painting Busts and Large Scale minis, due to a challenge here.
