Nightmare: sacrificing my Bones for Reapercon!

Whooo!  Thanks everyone!  We're in the home stretch.  Which is good 'cause I'm running out of time!  Today's plan involves Light!!  We must have light to balance the shadowy evilness!

 

First, I debated, fiddled and finally came up with a composition I liked and took a photo so I wouldn't forget.

 

 

I still have to paint those darn sneakers.  They're so tiny!  I miss my 54 mm minis now...

 

 

Ok, one of the problems we run into with OSl is that the light source and the light it casts doesn't end up looking light, and isn't the brightest highlight of the piece.  This makes our brains go "Huh?" and gives us that sense that something is off.  The best way I think to combat this, is to make sure the highlighting is done first, then add the colored light.  to that end, I'm using my leather white and intense brown here and blending down to my dark elf and nightshade.  On the opposite side, the monster doesn't go above aircraft gray for the most part.  This should help maintain my contrast.  Plus, I'm using 2 different light sources more of less- the shadowy otherworld one and the real, yellowy one.

 

 

Before I even do any color, I make sure I'm happy with my highlighting.  I also ignore paint that gets on the outside of the base.  It's ok to be messy, 'cause I'll paint over it later anyway!

 

 

Color!  What I did here was use the sun yellow, saffron sunset and mixed some fire red with the brown and saffron.  It helps give the illusion of the change in color as we get farther from the lightsource.

 

 

I blend in a bit of my greens overtop to smooth the transition.

 

 

Then I stuck the bits on I was ready to glue down and painted on my shadows.  Shadows closer to the light are shorter, ones farther are longer.

 

 

 

Whew.  Almost done.  Now, I'll just do a bunch of touchups, glue the rest of the stuff down, attach the vertical Nightmare and brace the back.  Soon.  Soon!

Thanks everyone!  I always try to bring my big cool projects to future Reapercons, so if you can ever make one, this should be there! 

 

Light is one of the things I'm learning and so practicing it like this is helpful for me!  Rhonda Bender (Wren) is a great resource for OSL.

I love this, the idea, the creativity, your skill and ability is amazing.

 

One thing is bugging me though, well maybe a couple things, the light.

 

They could be intentional and if so ignore me.

 

Light generally spreads the same distance in all directions but your light seems to go further into the room then it goes up the wall.

 

Secondly, your light blending on the floor is phenomenally smooth with great transitions and blends while the light on the wall is choppy and not smooth at all.

the wall is just basecoated right now.  I think what I may do it lessen the spread on the floor though- great idea!!  Thanks!!
