Lord of the Lake Below (ReaperCon 2016 Painters Gold Sophie Winner)

Hello again, everyone!  Well, I still can hardly believe that I can say this now, but...  I won the Gold Sophie for the ReaperCon 2016 Painters Category!!!  There were so many awesome entries, and I am super honored and humbled that everyone liked this piece so much!  You all just make painting so much fun (as I've said many times before), and I simply loved talking with you about all of our minis and every facet of our shared hobby!

 

 

 

 

The mini itself was the ReaperCon 2015 Hall of Fame Dinner exclusive mini, and so I did not think that he would ever officially be released, but then I saw him in the coming releases display at ReaperCon!  Who knows?  Maybe that means he'll be a part of Bones IV!!!

 

I added the tentacles by starting with an old leaded-pewter TSR space worm of some kind that I got from Jasper after a forum painting contest a few years ago, and then I sculpted the scales and suckers with green stuff.  If you're curious, you can see the whole WIP starting here.

It is a BEAUTIFULLY  painted vignette done in a GORGEOUS array of colors AND gracing a FANTASTIC base. You could have won the award for the shield alone. FANTASTICALLY WELL DONE!

I spent, no lie, like 5 minutes just staring at this mini and taking pictures from every angle when I was at the Con.  Then i ran over just to find Ian and ask if he could talk with me about the painting technique.  He ended up teaching an impromptu mini-class for a few of us during his spare moments in between teaching other classes.  Not only a wonderful mini, but a great teacher, as well.  I'm a fan now.  

 

I'm definitely going to have to attempt something like this in the near future, the style is definitely something I want to try and emulate.
