Honey, I'm Home!!!! A gift Mini.... (pic heavy)

Recommended Posts

So to set the stage....

This noob on the forums joins a mini exchange.....

the person he is painting for asks that he challenge himself by only using 1 bottle of Red, 1 Blue, 1 Black, and 1 White.....

Said noob is the type that buys paints in quintads (5 paint colors) so he doesn't have to mix paint, has just learned that he can thin paint before adding it to a mini, wet palettes are the Lords of Lead's gift to a painter, etc etc....

So what does any noob to the Reaper forum do when they have a question?

PMs Ub3r_N3rd....

Said Ub3r_N3rd is very nice, patient, and helpful to said noob, even though his in box is coming near to bursting from pms....

The mini gets painted to a Not Perfect, But Acceptable standard, the diorama is built, the whole thing shipped out, and received....

But, said noob feels that he is in debt to his benefactor, and wants to do something nice for him.....

so while looking through the Hasslefree catalog online, which said noob also learned about from our beloved enabler, he sees a mini called "My Hero"...

my%20hero.jpg

Problem is, I am not a girl, so the original thought wont work, painting the mini to look like me saying thanks to my rescuer....

But I bought the mini anyway, thinking maybe I could do something....

So as I got to know Ub3r a bit better, and find out things about him, I thought that maybe, I could try and do this as his wife welcoming him home....

As I did not think that she would appreciate being painted up almost sky clad, I thought that I could sculpt some clothes on her, and split the base into a mini diorama, with her on the real life side, and him as his forum personae....

Little did I know that 'drapery', putting clothes on a mini is one of the harder parts of sculpting, but I had an ace in the hole....

Enter the New England Miniatures Painters Association member and forumite Mad Jack....

I asked him at a paint day if he would take a commission, what I wanted, and what it was for, and he agreed!

(I will let him make his own comments here....)

He did a super duper awesome job for me and I proceeded to work this up....

There was a selected group of folks that I pm ed with a work in progress, so I am going to cut and paste that here, without their comments, they can add them themselves if they wish....

(Edit, I had to edit some stuff that was needed for this to work....)

OH Jack....

She is beautiful!!!!!!

001.jpg

002.jpg

003.jpg

Here they are, right out of the package.....

now i need to gently clean them, and make the base, and prime.....

Sent 02 September 2016 - 07:58 PM

Yeah, gotta step up my game for this...

Sent 05 September 2016 - 02:15 AM

So I did the base in 2 parts, a smaller fan style brick, and a courser dungeon stone for them to stand on...

The plan is to have her on the fan style, with the brick painted like a tiled floor, while he is on the dungeon floor with stuff growing through the cracks etc

Everything has been primed so I can start....

025.jpg 026.jpg

027.jpg

028.jpg

029.jpg

I forgot to mention Jack threw this in as well...

022.jpg

023.jpg

024.jpg

It got started with some Arabic Shadow...

Thanks for looking!

George

(Never did finish the little skull mug, but I gave it to Ub3r at the con....)

Sent 06 September 2016 - 02:15 PM

So,  black, and we all know how much fun that is to paint....

So I am thinking Dark Blue for the dress, with Black shoes....

The barbarian will likely have some sort of tan leather pants, brown boots, and manly chest hair....

I guess that painting chest hair would be like 5 o'clock shadow? a little grey mixed in with the skin tone????

Thoughts or comments????

Thanks!

hMMM.... STIPLING....

Might have to look at his WiP for his current avatar mini and see how he did it....

only seems right somehow....

Sent 07 September 2016 - 12:07 PM

Thanks ****!

My go to black at the moment is Scale 75 Abyssal Blue, with a glaze of Scale F&G Decay Black as my base.

you can see it on the rangers boots, Bracers, and belts in this thread

(Names changed to protect the guilty)

I have been slacking this past week, as the mojo seems to have deserted me at a really bad time....

Did get started though...

So eyes got done, and base coat of skin tones....

In the pic I have, Mrs Ub3r looks a little darker complected than he, so I mixed some African Shadow into the Arabic Shadow....

013.jpg

014.jpg

015.jpg

016.jpg

I thought I was going to be able to paint her first, but I am going to need to paint his face and neck first, as her face is deep in there with their hair and such, and any mistakes would bump her face....

Sent 12 September 2016 - 01:37 AM

I think I need to expunge the idea that 'this should be an easy mini to do' from my brain....

I Still think you did a magnificent job!!!!

Hopefully I can do it justice...

Sent 15 September 2016 - 11:49 PM

More work, A mix of 50% Arabic Shadow and Basic Flesh, and Then Black metal on the axe head, as I had it on the pallet from working on Geirahod...

004.jpg 005.jpg 006.jpg 007.jpg

Sent 18 September 2016 - 03:46 AM

So the mojo returned for tonight....

Worked on Ub3r's skin...

Basic Flesh, 50% Basic Flesh and Golden Skin, Golden Skin, 50% Golden Skin and Light Skin, then a couple of glazes of Golden Skin and Basic Flesh (3-2)

Sent 18 September 2016 - 11:15 PM

So disaster!

I made a glaze of Agrax Earthshade with 5 drops of Medium mix, and 5 drops Flow improver mix, to 1 drop ink.....

LOTS OF WHITE MEDIUM in places.....

So out came the tamiya qtips and tried to remove it, and ended up removing a bit of green stuff Jack patched on some pits...

so out came the Reaper Brush on primer, and back up through the skin tones...

Not feeling great tonight but something got done...

Another coat on their hair, her shoes got Abyssal Blue, his Black and Brown Leather

His side of the base in GW Codex Grey, her side in Nacer. Her side will be blue and white tile, maybe green and white as her dress will be blue...

His side will look like a typical dungeon floor...

Sent 25 September 2016 - 04:10 AM

So I picked up the Olive Skin Triad today, and tried to use it to do some glazes on her skin....

Mixed a little bit of MSP Blond Highlight into the final ones...

Her dress got several coats of Navy Blue, His wrist bands got Necro Gold, and did another coat on the base....

I Might change her hair to the colors I used on The DSM Barbarian Queen in February....

001.jpg

002.jpg

003.jpg

004.jpg

I also noticed I got some blue on the inside of his right arm....

everything got some dullcote to make erasing easier....

But that was before I noticed the blue....

Thanks for putting up with my shenanigans!!!!

So many glazes......

Olive skin highlight glazes on the Mrs skin....

Moar brown Leather on his pants....

Decay black on his hair....

Brown Leather on his boots....

Oh yeah.....

Manly hair.....

001.jpg

002.jpg

003.jpg

004.jpg

I started by stippling some Abyssal Blue, then some Decay Black....

Then a glaze of Arabic Shadow / Basic Flesh....

What do you folks think?

Did I just Bork it?

(I was studying his Draco the Barbarian thread....)

Sent 27 September 2016 - 10:13 AM

I think I am going to try to glaze it back a bit....

The minis that he has used for avatars that I have seen have had facial and chest hair, even if he had to add them with paint....

I think the clean shaven Conan has come from the Arnold version, but remember that body builders don't want any hair hiding their forms....

Likely costs them points.....

Sent 28 September 2016 - 12:01 AM

A lot moar glazing on their skins, and Cantabric Blue, and Cantabric and Tesla Blues 50% on her dress....

001.jpg

002.jpg

003.jpg

004.jpg

The manly hair look better now???

Sent 28 September 2016 - 12:32 AM

I stippled it on and have since added 2glazes to try to tone it down....

Her face may be 1 glaze behind the rest but there is a lot of Shadow there....

Will inspect more tomorrow night...

Sent 29 September 2016 - 12:05 AM

So worked on her face with some Pink Flesh on her lips, and some highlights done with MSP Olive Highlight / Light and Golden skin mix...

007.jpg

I think, (let me know what you think!) that I am done with her skin, barring accidents....

The only other thing was Decayed Metal on his belt, to go to a Brass colored final....

008.jpg

009.jpg

010.jpg

011.jpg

Let me know what you think, and things you think I need to fix!!!!

Tried to fix his manly stubble by stippling some Basic Flesh over the stippled greys...

Did the first pass at highlighting his pants with Rainy Grey and Brown Grey, and his axe haft with Sahara Yellow and Thar Brown...

This should have been posted last night.....

Worked on the axe handle, started trying to do fine lines for wood grain, didn't work so well, so now it looks like cocobolo wood or something...

001.jpg

002.jpg

003.jpg

004.jpg

I mean, what's a magic axe without an exotic Haft????

GW Scorched brown, glazes of GW Dark Brown ink and Agrax Earthshade...

Sent 04 October 2016 - 11:53 PM

So more work on Mr & Mrs N3rd...

Silver Metallics on axe head and butt...

Gold metallics on his belt and Jewelry...

GW Snot Green on the "gems" as base coat

Orange Leather and Iroku on his boots...

Went through my "stone" drybrushing on his side of the base, hers I worked on the whites....

I kind of want to add a color on her side to make the floor looked like a kitchen floor, so I was going to do it in 'checks'...

Suggestion for color?

Almost started with GW Goblin Green, but thought about a dark blue to complement her dress?

Thoughts?????

THanks for the comments!

Maybe a light grey on the tiles then to stick with a neutral color?

Her dress is a Navy blue with an ink glaze over it, I do have lighter blues and grey blues that could be used....

The axe handle is all free hand, and not what I was going for, but I liked what I got....

I think I need to go over the gems again though....

Sent 07 October 2016 - 10:41 AM

To tired to post last night, but I sent the pics to myself....

More work on both sides of the base, more touch ups on his belt and wristlets, and added a glaze of blue ink on his axe.

Then Cobalt Alchemy and Speed metal on the edges...

And touched his manly stubble/chest fur with the Dark elf shadow / Blue Liner glaze that I used on the Intellect Devourers...

006.jpg

007.jpg

008.jpg

009.jpg

Not sure, as I am at work as I write this, but I think I am going to leave her side of the base white...

Some discreet high lighting on her shoes, some more work on their hair, finish the axe, seal and add moss etc to his side of the base and done!

Sent 07 October 2016 - 08:22 PM

Thanks folks!

I think I am going to tint half the tiles with blue ink...

GW Fortress grey?

Vallejo Stonewall grey?

F& G Miskatonic Grey?

I think I'm going to go with the GW....

the Vallejo is to brown, F&G towards the purple / blue....

Sent 08 October 2016 - 12:29 AM

OKay, almost there....

Highlighted the axe blade with Speed Metal, then the floor on her side, Ary showed me the pics of the tile Mrs N3rd chose, so I did it with GW Fortress Grey, then dilute Didi's Magic Ink (Black) was for the grout...

Going to go over the tiles again after the 'grout' dries...

For some reason, the Dullcote seems to be drying Matte instead of Flat...

Going to airbrush some Polly S Clear Flat on them tomorrow night...

Added a couple tufts to the base....

and some flock in the cracks after the airbrushing tomorrow.....

Snipparo on the back tuft...

center tuft was problematic, as I couldn't get a pair of snips in...

I tried with an X Acto knife....

The DullCote flattened out for me, so no Polly S needed application...

And I put a rare earth magnet in the base for attachment to the plinth....

Further pics will be of the plinth work....

George

sorry about the blurry pic....

Sent 11 October 2016 - 11:49 PM

So I screwed the cube to the square base after sanding them as smooth as I could...

Then I drilled a hole in the top of the cube for another rare earth magnet, and the whole thing got stained with minwax Ebony stain....

002_1.jpg

003_1.jpg

Tomorrow will be some steel wooling and more stain...

(I realized I needed to do the diorama base, as I need to do a greenstuff rug on it, and if I am going to do one, might as well do both....)

Enter the New England Miniatures Painters Association member and forumite Mad Jack....

I asked him at a paint day if he would take a commission, what I wanted, and what it was for, and he agreed!

(I will let him make his own comments here....)

I believe my comment was, "If I ever find myself thinking about accepting a sculpting commission from Knarthex again, remind me to stab myself in the eye repeatedly with a sculpting tool until the urge passes..."

It's not so much that sculpting clothing is hard - the issue is that, if one were to sculpt the entire figure from scratch with the clothing on it, you'd finish the clothing on the woman before adding the bulk of the man's arm over her (or possibly even sculpting the bulk of the two figures separately before joining them)  making it much easier to create details in certain spots where the two bodies are extremely close together. The widest distance between her body and his is only about 6mm.

The majority of the details on her torso (the lapels of her jacket, the wrinkles on her lower back, and wrinkles in the skirt) are in areas where her body is pressed close to his or his arm is laid over her, and the shoes are wedged inbetween her feet and the base itself, leaving very little space in which to use tools, and in particular use them at the best angles to create those sorts of details.

Because we need more badelf fighting ladies.

Kev White, the sculptor, seems to have paid attention during "The First Avenger." Great uniform details. But I've already got the muscular and dynamic Zenith (50080) in that role, so I went with our neighbors to the North. The shield is, again, my addition.

Dungeon-crawling! They say it's a young humanoid's game, but that's not always true. A lifetime of experience and the survival skills necessary to get to one's golden or even orichalcum years are pretty useful.

Here's Sebastian, a knight of some experience from Hasslefree. Well armored and cautious, probably why he's still around.

And another, less cautious but equally seasoned adventurer, Conran the Barbarian, also from Hasslefree.

      More pictures:

Here he is bonding with the grandkids (Serris, 02997 and Cuth Wolfson, 03701)

      and at his day job.

(Conran is definitely a version of Pratchett's Cohen the Barbarian, who conceded that after a few hours of fighting a ten-thousand-man army he might start getting tired too--but so would his enemies, as they would be running uphill at that point.)

Fighter and barbarian-thief are a good start, but a well-rounded party should also have an arcanist and a healer. Jos Gebbler, 14317, and Estra,  60198, seem like good fits. A combined three centuries of adventuring experience pays off!

But there are threats yet older than they...

The Al Fasid, also known as "The Corrupted", are HaqqIslam's heavy troopers that will get the job done no matter the cost.  Their methods aren't always the prettiest, and they're never the stealthiest, and they have their own tricks they bring with them to the table.  They don't care about glory, and are solely chosen for their solid record of getting the job done.  Some enjoy it, some are in it for the solid paycheque, and others do it because the only thing theyy know what to do is fight.  Today I have the HMG version, who also conveniently carries a grenade launcher that can shoot either regular grenades to keep enemy heads down, or smoke grenades to provide additional cover.  Oh, they also pack anti-personnel mines with them too...

Since the "tactical rock" under his right foot kind of looked rather strikingly like the backpack for a Yu Jing (even though I'm not having any luck finding models to confirm this), I decided to try and test out my planned colour scheme for them.  That's right, I'll be going with a dark raver / cyberpunk burnt neon pink for their general colour, because why not - I'm going with hot orange for my Haqq...

The Solstices: June marks the beginning of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere and Winter in the Southern Hemisphere.  Paint a miniature or a pair of miniatures showcasing this duality.

      Skill Challenge: OSL
Try your hand at painting a miniature using OSL or Object-Source Lighting.  If you feel like this is something that is already in your wheelhouse, work on your technical skills in another area.  Practice NMM, TMM, wet-blending, sculpting, or anything else you've been meaning to try.

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!
