Vigilance - Reapercon entry

So I entered this at reapercon in the painter's category, at the time I painted it I was happy-ish, now not so much. But, I can't really tell what I don't like. Rhonda Bender told me I was losing the mid-tone and I agree, however I'd still like to hear y'all's thoughts. C&C appreciated and very much wanted!

I think you're painting is very good so any critique is just my personal opinion.

I don't see some things from the rules of good composition that I think would move you up to the next level:

If you look at the image It doesn't follow the rule of thirds (See this link for more explanation).

There's no focal point to draw the eye. There's no human face (it's hidden in a hood). There's no splash of color (like a bright red flower or dripping bloody tears).

There's no flow. How does the eye move over the figure as it's presented? Have the base sweep up and draw the eye to the focal point.

Go for more power. You're good enough to rip the judge's hearts out if you try.

Good luck next year, oh wait, I'm entering next year.

Just stay home  ;)

Ohmigosh you're right! The composition is somewhat horrible, that's why it was bothering me! Thanks, I really appreciate the critique!

Do you remember which paints you used?  Was there a wash?

The pedestal, statue and shield are all the same tones, so going with a TMM on the shield, or mixing the Stone colors and Neutral grays triads.  The color differences are subtle, but noticeable. Dont be afraid to wash or add some non gray colors (blues, greens, browns) to them to give a variation on the stone.

I think it was basically every grey I owned and some spattered crimson with a tad bit of white. At the time I guess I just never had the idea to mix paints. I don't remember if I used a wash or not but I'm gonna guess no.
