Kingdom Death: Monster 2

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this should get posted somewhere else, but just wanted to share a quick gameplay moment.

We just started a new campaign and were completing Year 3.  One of the players is mostly unfamiliar with the setting, but has always tried to get all the best stuff for the character he named.  For the most part we let him because he likes to be the tough one.  Only 2 characters survived the fight with the Antelope - "his" character being one of them.  So we got back to the settlement and drew an event.  Not going to spoil anything here I hope, but we had to pick a couple survivors.  He picked "his", of course.  And then he rolled the die.... The result was the instant death of that survivor.

The shock and look of complete disbelief was priceless.  NEVER get attached to the survivors.  I think he has learned that lesson now.

I don't really know anything about the KD setting, but this anecdote and the fact that 'death' is right there in the name should tell you something.

Unless you're playing the Twilight Knight In training campaign variant in which case you should absolutely get attached to one particular survivor because if they die it's game over......

There are two types of campaigns I have seen so far: the ones that keep to four currently used survivors and only replace as they die, OR the ones that rotate out quite frequently.

Neither is a great idea to get too emotionally connected to your characters.

I really like the tragedies of the game as much as the triumphs.  but ill be sad to see my +4 luck archer bite the dust.  she has already used many village rerolls to survive settlement events.  but one of these days she is gonna hit death on a hunt or showdown, and the 3 other survivors are going to be out of rolls.

Yup! Sadly, one of my buddies won't play anymore because he lost 2 characters in one night.  Tried explaining to him that the survivors are just about as transitory as the resources you hack off your quarries, but that wasn't what he wanted to hear.    I love that game!

My gaming group found KD relatively easy, we passed through the basic game fairly quickly, faced down the Slenderman and the Man Hunter without too much drama. And then we hit the Spider and got creamed, complete wipe-out and it wasn't even close. Overconfidence is a powerful enemy in KD

It now looks like all the wave 2 (existing expansions) shipping should have happened since 'spare' existing stock has been put up for sale so as the latest newsletter says

"If you are a Kickstarter Backer and think you are missing something from your Wave 2 items, please reach out to support. "

now to get back to waiting for wave 3

Yeah, the twilight knight campaign is pretty rough, and only for that reason.

I don't like how the "heroic mode" takes the teeth out of the game completely, but you could try that with him.

I've been considering a "princess coin" mode (to go with the Super Dungeon crossovers).  Basically, instead of reproducing, you gain "coins" that bring survivors back to life.  Ultimately, it would make it WAY more possible to focus on a few survivors without making the game super easy.

We actually tried a 7 Samurai/Immortal campaign...  wow was that hard.  No you don't die, but you do get broken and our little collection of grumpy samurai were getting pretty roughed up by LY8 or so.  We hadn't discovered ways to fix them yet.  That campaign still needs to be wrapped up.

In any event, we are a group of 8 players with varying availability and game preferences (one guy refuses to play Eldritch Horror for example, whereas the rest of us really enjoy it) so we simply rotate whatever is on deck for the night based on folks' availability.

Your princess coin mode is interesting, though I think you need a more KDM-appropriate name for it.

Trying to decide if I'm going to add anything other than the First Hero expansion..  There are still a couple pin ups I wouldnt mind, but they are spread out across the sets..

Thinking about the Ivory Dragon because that expansion is going to get expensive at retail i think

This one was tough for me. I spent a ton. No, realy... a TON!

I opted for the Abyssal Woods expansion (and the various required expansions), plus First Hero and Silver City...AND Red Witches and Pariah to go with the Gryphon I already had pledged for. I also added the Campaigns of Death and Plastic Game Board as I think they will likely be crazy pricey later.

I also rounded out my original expansions with the Black Friday sale.

This leaves me without the Ivory Dragon, Death Armor, Screaming God, Inverted Mountain, Frogdog, Black Knight, Nightmare Ram, and Oblivion Mosquito from the KS. Also, I haven't added any of the things like Pathfinder heroes, Super Survivors, etc.

How bad am I going to hate myself for not getting any of that now?

(I have been doing my best to avoid non-gameplay stuff like the pinups...not sure this will hold forever, but I am succeeding so far)

Waiting patiently for some more details on the plastic board before I add one.

I know it would probably be better to buy it now, before Poots adds a terrain pack and all sorts of other gubbins to it and the price quadruples, but I need to see if it takes up too much of my limited space first.

Just ran across this. I’m not familiar with the company, but they seem pretty established in the historical line. Anyone have thoughts on these? The price per figure seems reasonable for good resin.
