Jasper paints Turtles?

Recommended Posts

Working on a colour scheme for something else, so I figured I'd start small and see how it goes.

Here's one of the 77270: Spikeshell Warriors, slathered in brown liner.

And here's the plan:

They're the world's most fearsome fighting team

Those spikey bits sure make them look real mean

When the evil players attack

That big ol club will give em a whack

The real turtle is very cute with that coloration. I have a feeling that miniature will look pretty fearsome when painted up like that.

well, painting after 10 pm isn't really my thing, but it was after 10 before I had a chance to sit down to paint last night, so I played with some colours a bit, then went to finally watch the latest Westworld at 11....

First just testing out the spots on the face and hands.  I'm not sure the base Walnut Brown is dark enough, but it isn't bad.

Shield Brown was my second try on the face and neck, seems about right.

Phoenix Red (I think) was used on the hands.

I'm not sure what to do with the plates on the arms and legs....would it look better with the red colour scheme carried through, maybe fading to a darker red/brown, or should the plates match the shell colouration?  Thoughts?

and the back.  Just working on the colours right now, not getting the blends right or anything.  Linen White is too white, need something a little more yellowy/tanish I think....

Thoughts?

I've never tried mimicking colours straight from a nature pic like this before.  It is interesting but I find myself second guessing my choices....

Made some more progress...I think.

Decided to do the plates on the arms and legs going from a Chestnut brown up to the Phoenix red.  But I'm not sure if I should spot the rest of the legs or leave them dark.

Is the spotted leg too much?  If I went with the spots they would likely get bigger and blotchier, that was just a quick test.

I also put a rough coat on the shell.

I thought it needed a bit of red/orange in the progression.  It will mostly disappear in the blending, but I wanted a bit in there to tint the browns.

Thoughts??

I love the shell and I love the armor plates.  The dots work great on the hands, but the legs fall flat for me.  Outside of seeming too bright, they seem like something that would only be "elbows/knees" outward, not all the way up.  That's my mind working though, feel free to ignore me as you see fit!

I think it's a great colourscheme.

It works very well.

Maybe only the spikes, plates on the legs and the most potruding points should be red.

Don't overdo it.

Look at the real thing..it looks like there is some more orange there.

I haven't seen a lot of posts with this mini (02997, Serris, female fighter-thief), and that is a shame, because she is MAGNIFICENT. Dynamic and bold, with amazing fantasy hair and the build of a wrasslin' goddess. She's a big girl, too--even hunched over, fully 32mm from toe to top. Great value for $4.99.

Fighter-thief" is an odd designation, because she looks like a barbarian, in the Red Sonja line (or maybe one of Merida's conquering ancestors). Then again, Conan did a lot of thieving and reaving as well as slaying. She definitely has a Cimmerian torso. Lats for days.
Tried to give her a sunburnt-looking partial tan, she being a redhead and all.

Let's pit her against some monstrous opponents! My character in "Tomb of Annihilation" was a Tortle barbarian with a macahuitl named Mossback. (He venerated the ancestors, especially Great Ancestor Kawa-Bunga,) So the Spikeshells were a natural fit. I love their alligator-snapping-turtle gestalt. The word 'ornery' was MADE for snapping turtles. (and also the American badger, but I digress)

And some more shots of the swamp tortles. They were mostly contrast paints, Snakebite Leather and Gore-Grunta Fur. The green of the algae in their shell cracks is AP Disgusting Slime.

And now for this week's minis, the spikeshell warriors. These guys were painted to tabletop using the same artists paints, but one was over white and the other was over black.  The shell patterns are also different, but I ended up liking one more than the other.

      Thanks for looking.

      Spiney turtles for brown reference.
I dreamed of these guys last night, and realized how I wanted to do the colors
brownline base, a mix of red, orange and brown for a midtone, and ochre as a highlight with half-steps between them,
they painted up quickly this morning - and then I realized I had some free time this afternoon, and painted up a third as a box turtle.
I blame this one on the getting to know you question.

today was a good day for painting.

I painted these Squogs, Turtles and Kar Drakir to fit in with my lizardmen/seraphon for Age of Sigmar. The squogs and turtles were painted early last year, a quick paint job to test out some colours for my lizardmen. Kar Drakir was painted to serve as a lizardmen hero. The squogs were slightly converted - Mudcroak received a Lizardmen style staff top and one of the squogs got a skink sword.

The Squogs and Turtles were okay models - the weapons on the squogs were fairly thin and thus a bit floppy. Kar Drakir was amazing. I think models that's 35mm+ is where the bones material really starts to shine.
