Highlight advice

Recommended Posts

So I'm working on this guy as a gift, and I finally think I've twitched the purple on the body into something I like.  For the most part, I also like the red in the mane, tail, and bottom of the legs.  However, I am somehow hitting a brick wall when I try to think of what to use for bright highlights on the mane and tail.  I don't think any of the reds will be contrast enough, I really don't want to go pink, and I'm hesitant to try yellow for fear it will look too much like flames.  Should I use something really far off, like the Sophie silver I blended into the horn?  Or something else?

Suggestions please!

One of the ways I like to paint what we call red hair is by shading with a more reddish color, having an orange primary color, and finishing with more blondish highlights. You don't always have to just use darker and lighter shades of the same color when shading and highlighting. Going one step over of the color wheel can provide some nice contrast. Especially with hair that tends not to be a uniform color anyways.

Hrm, thanks.  I don't have the triad but for some reason I wasn't considering doing hairlike highlights since it's a fantasy color to start with.  That's some great suggestions, thanks.  And I guess I just haven't watched the most recent video, because I'm subscribed to that :-)

So we're agreed that red highlights well with orange/yellow. Matbar has wondered at using silver for the highlights. Why not look at gold? It's roughly a yellow. Mixing a little of the red and gold together should give you and orange highlight that's slightly glittery. Then a final light touch with just the gold. Light touches on both of these.

Who says something magical as a unicorn wouldn't have hair so glossy it verges on glistering?

      Hello All,
Here is a 07047 Unicorn I completed a bit ago.
      Thank you for looking.

This is the 3D printable forest from Signum Games. I bought a physical copy from a seller on Etsy to use as a background for my minis. It is printed in 32mm scale, but only tiny 28mm figures fit in it. The young forest dragon (DHL #3332) and Unicorn foal (DHL #2207) are here to better show the scale. Might need to buy another version in 74mm...😁

It's definitely a worm, and it's definitely purple. Speed paint.

Here is the Warlord Unicorn, #14457. I like the dynamic action of this pose. It feels like he is ready to stomp and skewer someone. And we will just call those mold lines 'battle scars.' Did anyone else have trouble trying to get rid of those? I could not smooth the seam on the horn down.
He was painted with a pale blue undertone to his coat, and a pale mauve to his mane, tail and feathering. The undertones were lightened up by adding pearl white (#9100) to each layer. I plan to do another one of these in black, once I get my hands on a pearl black bottle.

Minis for this week. I have to get on the ball and finish my current to do pile of minis. I have to get them ready for the campaign and I just ordered a bajillion minis through Bones 5 when it reopened. Luckily I have a little time before they arrive and I am completely overwhelmed.

I was just going to speed paint this, but once I started I ended up taking a lot more time on it than I thought. I wanted very subtle highlighting on the white and very smooth blending which came out better than I expected. One mistake I made was not prepping the model better. I didn't plan on spending as much time on this as I did and wish now that I had spent more time on cleaning up the mold lines.

I saw some examples of this figure painted and thought I could do a better face than what I saw. I did not. The face on this figure was way harder than I first thought. The eyes are deeply set and the face if very round and smooth. The glasses are a trick to get right too.
