Egg of Coot
Hey all, I'm thinking of scrapping my jury rigged set-up and investing in a proper spray booth for airbrushing. That being said, I need some recommendations. My caveat is that venting to the outdoors may not be possible from my work area (I still have to engineer a feasible work around) - so filtration is going to be important. Auberon
No idea about retail airbrush setups, but if you're rich you can go laboratory grade! IIRC, the filters alone go for $350+ EDIT: Out of curiosity I found one of these on Amazon for a cool $4500.
Bloodhowl
I have one of these from TCP Global:
TGP
Knarthex has one and I think Tiny Rhombus has one.
knarthex
what does he want to know???? I've had mine since 11 Sept 2015, and I love it! It looks like the same one Bloodhowl posted above.... The only thing it filters are the paint particles, so if using an airbrush with water as your thinning agent, the only fumes would come from what is in the paint itself... Any gasses, propellants from rattle cans, solvents for oil based paints are ejected out the window.... I don't know of any way to filter those, but the hose that is used is the same diameter as normal dryer hose...(4"?) so you could install a vent of that type if you wished, with relative simplicity.... Youtube review there is a review here of the top 3 hobby booths: airbrushcompressorreviews.net/blog/top-3-airbrush-spray-booths/ but there are comerce links, so no linky allowed Feel free to pm me, or jump on the hangouts from 9pm to 12am (EST) most evenings and I will answer any questions I can... one thing, I have used mine for Hangout Airbrush tutorials, and other times while on the hangouts, and it is not so loud so as to make communication over the web a problem... yes, people do hear it.... Here is the thread about my hangout tutorials... Any links to hangouts are void... George Look up this one: Artograph 1530 Hobby Model Spray Boothit does not appear to need outside venting, but is 4x the price.... Product Description Artograph's 1530 Spray Booth traps both particulate and odor and can accommodate flat or 3-D objects. The 15-Inch-by-30-Inch work surface features a three-stage filter system: 1st Stage: 100-percent polyester pre-filter media that traps the bulk of the initial spray and provides a continuous clean work surface. Spray Booth includes 5 pre-cut sheets. Replacement Pre-Filters available in a pre-cut 20 sheet pack or unique cost-saving 50-yard roll. 2nd Stage: Under the pre-filter is a 1" thick non-woven polyester air-laid material with a blue PVC binder on the exit side. This material, unlike fiberglass, is non-toxic, will not migrate on the air exit side and offers excellent filtration. Spray Booth includes 1 each of this filter. 3rd Stage: A carbon-impregnated polyester (poly-carb) offering odor and further particle-trapping efficiency. Spray Booth includes 1 each of this filter. The 1530 Spray Booth fan develops 370 CFM of air flow. The spray guard hood can also be replaced. It also includes a built-in exhaust adapter for venting out-of-doors or to another space. 5 year warranty. Made in the USA. tiniest rhombus
I have the same one George has. There's two types. One with the hoses one without. I have the one with the hose. I think George has covered most everything. I like it a lot.
vutpakdi
I have the Artograpgh 1530, and I have been quite happy with it overall. I don't have outside venting set up and have not noticed any issues with particulate matter. I still use a good mask with replaceable filters because I'm paranoid that way. There are three filters. I advance (and cut off) the used portion of the pre-filter roll every session or two. I haven't felt the need to replace the other two filters yet, but I also don't airbrush as much as I should. The fan noise is significant to my sensitive ears. You will need a good lamp to shine on the station. Harrek
Isn't there a version with lights in it? And another venting solution might be vent into a box with an opening the size of the hose. Just put old rags, paper towels, etc in the box and replace them occasionally. This came to me from an airbrush artist who would use an old empty tissue box filled like that to blow out his air brush into between color changes and such. RouterMike
I have a booth similar to the Master one above. Unlike Knarthex's mine does not have LED lights, but I can swing one of my swing lamps over the top of it for all the lighting I need. This thing is awesome, and no louder than the hobby air compressor. Venting back into the same room would likely be an issue without some additional filtering though. The default filter in it is pretty low end and won't stop much more than paint particles. Especially if using anything other than acrylic paints and airbrush medium. If you try to use window cleaner as a medium, I do not believe this would filter that crap out.
Harrek
I was saying vent into the room. But into an enclosed box.
Egg of Coot
The prices are right for the TCP Global booths, but the CFM rating of the fans is uber-low compared to all the recommendations for booths I've seen. The Artograph units are sturdier (I understand the TCP booths are portable - not a selling point for me) and have better blowers, but I need some better info on the quality of the filtration. I understand it uses mechanical and chemical elements, but I wonder how effective they really are. Also the price is killer at $430US, which works out around $540 CDN plus duty. I'm starting to reconsider the merits of another DIY booth. I can get a Dayton blower with a far better CFM rating than either of the above for about $70 US. Building a custom booth around that wouldn't cost me more than another $50 in materials either . . . OK then, anyone know of a decent set of plans for a DIY option? MikeGolfJ3
Below is the one I have and it great for indoors. It's easy to vent, and you can make your own replacement filters from from regular HVAC filter materials from your local hardware store. I have one of these from TCP Global:
