Sketchbook digest a bit slim this week due to classes starting up. Draw every day!

This week I got in a new book, Steve Huston's Figure Drawing for Artists. Did some gesture studies, both practice from the book and overlay gestures of master works. Then a page of head construction studies.

Only one comic book copy this week, took me two days to finish (4x15 minute breaks). Copy of an Alex Ross concept for Planet Hulk.

I see good progress. When you are working from reference you are creating really strong pieces. Are you doing imagination work as well? Be careful working from comic artists.. I learned the hard way that there's more bad habits learned than insight gained on that particular discipline. I've personally found gesture/life drawing infinitely more helpful.

Either way, thanks for sharing your art. I'm eager to see your painting progress!

I do about 95% copy work right now. I don't have the tools to do good original work yet, so I don't bother much with it. Here's a primitive original piece I did last year: https://cashwiley.com/2016/12/24/kings-man/The improvement in my technique from when I started to when I finished only bolstered my opinion that I can wait until my technique catches up to worry about original pieces.

Comic copies are just my junk food. I analyze them with my developing trained eye, I find it useful to learn how artists I enjoy interpret anatomy and composition. I don't feel I'm picking up any bad habits from them, and if I am, *shrug*

I do work from life when possible, it's how I began my training and I'm lucky enough to have found a world-class painter as a mentor. She gave me an excellent lecture to help me improve my experience in figure drawing class, and hopefully I'll get some time with her this weekend doing some figure study using a model she's got set up for her current painting in her studio...

Thanks for looking!

Another slim sketchbook week due to classes. I kind of took a class on Sunday, too. Sat in on a figure painting class and did gesture drawings. Since there was only one pose, I ended up sketching the students a lot. Here's a sample of that, I did a bunch of pages like this. Gestures ranging from 20 seconds to 2 minutes (but mostly 30 seconds to a minute), charcoal on newsprint 18x24. Also a head study at the end of the session, about 15 minutes (same media).

In the sketchbooks, another page of study from Huston's book, graphite on paper 9x12. Still working on my Simone Bianchi Ororo copy in the small sketchbook...getting bogged down in the hair details, blah.

Woops, forgot the painting update last week. You can read hear for more words, I've already forgotten what the heck I did! https://cashwiley.com/2017/02/01/wednesday-night-oils-11/

No digest this week, the only sketchbook work I did was on Ororo and a few practice gestures for class last week. So here's my copy of Simone Bianchi's Ororo piece. Mine is graphite, 8.5 x 5.5:

Figure drawing as usual is from nudes, so here you go: https://cashwiley.com/2017/02/09/tuesday-night-figure-drawing/

Starting the first painting with the hand, chin and mouth. Basically just putting in the planar changes and adding a vibrant color to build on later. I once again put my faith in my instructor, because to me it looked garishly bright. After watching her paint for a while, though, and picking her brain for a bit, I was able to get it to start coming together. It's a bit different than the previous portraits and I love how she continues to push me with each project.

Wednesday night oils! Had a pretty successful night. Fixed the drawing for the right side of the head, had to widen things out by almost an inch, but the proportions are correct now. Better to fix something immediately, no matter that it's a lot of effort. Then I focused on first painting the shadows. Since his right cheek and eye were mostly framed by shadows, and I needed to mix some halftones to blend the shadow edge into, I also first painted the cheek and eye there. All in all, quite a bit of paint was put down last night!

Part of my ability to get right into painting was my awesome pochade box. Most of my mixes from last week were still workable, so I was able to start painting almost immediately. Here's the state of the palette after last night's session:
