Resolutionary Painting Challenge 2017 Chatter/Questions

Recommended Posts

[MOD]Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites.

Posting Non-Reaper Figures

When you post in Show off, please use the topic title line for the name of your creation, and use the tags for the manufacturer. That way, you're descriptive and search-friendly at the same time while giving credit where it's due. Use Tags liberally, for manufacturer, name, part number, modifications done, etc. These help our members find your model!

We have a high volume of posts generated from this challenge, which is great! But it's also creating a lot of work for the mods. Ladystorm has already urged folks to comply with these guidelines.[/MOD]

Important Change!

As an experiment, this project has been moved to be a bi-monthly challenge. The longer time frame theoretically will give less stress to painting, and allow more complex jobs, and more sinister challenges.

FAQ

Reaper only? - No.

If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes.

Are speed paints acceptable - Yes.

Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes.

Based or unbased? - Yes.

Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes.

NEW RULE - Size Equivilancy

(This list is subject to change as bones 3 releases)

Medium and smaller = 1 ea

Simple Terrain (plain floors, walls) = 1ea

Complex Terrain (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Terrain/latest/03518 or such) = 2 ea

Large (Giants and the like) = 2 ea

Huge (Most dragons, Demon Minotaur Lord, etc) = 3 ea

Bigger (Kally, Khanjirra, etc) = half of quota – rounded up

Colossal ("Tianot,") = quota

Due to the variable nature of a CAV I compare them against a generic 28mm figure and the Avatar large figure. I take height and bulk into considering if it is worth 1 or 2 figures.

If it's not in this list, it counts as 1.

Thunderbird

Emperor

Ronin

Simba

Tiamat

Katana

Tyrant

Starhawk

Regent

Cataphract

Silverback

Kraken

If you have a question on the size, please post it here, and I'll address them individually.

Much like last year, the idea is to help those of us that normally paint VERY little, to start painting more.

You challenge begins...now!

And Our Mantra:

4 for the exchanges, something new to try

12 for the monsters, who in the dungeons moan

7 for the competition, to please the judges eye

19 for the table top, which will set the tone

9 for the players, doomed to see their characters die

One for the master painter on his ergonomic throne

In the well lit studio where no shadows lie

one tag to hue them all, one tag to bind them

one tag to bring them all and in the forum find them.

In the well lit studio where no shadows lie

Participants:

If your name is missing, or you believe your count is incorrect, please PM me. Please note: to make counts easier, you must post in the bi-monthly thread.

Pending

The objective:

To paint 52+ minis throughout the course of the year via bi-monthly quota

(each bi-monthly thread will have the quota listed as well as the master list)

What qualifies:

Darn near anything!

Reaper/non-reaper!

Any material!

Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten!

Exchange minis!

Speed paints!

Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well)

Any Size!

Based/unbased!

Etc! (I think that covers everything)

Looks fine on my PC.

I'm in for another year.

So CAV Infantry (~10mm) each count as 1?

Likewise for the War & Empire 15-18 mm ancients I really should start on?

Per the rules, yes. If I start establishing a minimum size rule it gets hairy

Cool, I'm in again!

I kinda fell apart the end of last year, but I still got a respectable amount done, so here's hoping for a better year!

Going to have to quote Gimli on this..."that still only counts as one!" :;):

Did I forget to mention I am in this year as well?

Count me in. This year will hopefully see many painted pieces of terrain, board game minis, and Bones.

I'm not sure what you mean, so here's both:

Main thread(like this one)

http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/66365-resolutionary-painting-challenge-2016-chatterquestions/

Example of monthly (or bimonthly in this case) thread:

Sorry for the confusion. I just reread my post; not sure what was going on. I need to get a proofreader.

Anyway, the monthly post was what I was looking for. That was exactly what I was looking for.

Finishing up the Goblins from the Bones 4 core set.

Second background, in progress.  Started with tape to control swelling and rolling.  First coat was brushed (1.5" cheap brush from hobby store) with a mix of gesso, water, and Patio Paint Fiesta Yellow (probably a dab of khaki to dull the tone too).  After a day or two to dry I used a chunk of construction sponge to cover the paper with a mix of water, pva glue, a drop of dish soap (helps with rings at this consistency, or so I believe), and Ceramcoat Raw Sienna (possibly some Apple Barrel Nutmeg too for redness).  Swiped the whole thing for coverage, then blotted, dragged, and blew as it dried a bit to achieve the variation in texture you see.  This one is going great, I must say.  The first one I did didn't look like the image in my mind until about 7 steps in, and never quite looked right.  Question, comments, critiques welcome!

Finished this a while ago actually, but am just now posting the finished product.  I got a bug and am now making a few variations on these--just on art paper for the moment, but I wouldn't mind having them printed on neoprene or something a little more durable.  Now I just need more minis to photo in front of them!  Let me know what you think.  WIP here:  https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/83003-attempting-to-paint-generic-backgrounds-for-miniature-photography/&tab=comments#comment-1760821

Delving into the Bones 4 core set, we start by pulling out the 24 bonus goblins that originally were in the Bones 3 core set. And add to them the 12 that I have from the previous kickstarter for a grand total of 36 goblins, 6 each of 6 different sculpts. I actually think I should have a few more of these, as one of the ones I got in the Bones 3 shipment was missing a part, and Reaper sent me a whole pack as a replacement. I wonder where I have put the originals?

These are a bit thinner and more weedy sculpts than the Bones 1 and 2 goblins (Reaper makes a lot of Goblins, obviously they sell well), but as such they should fit well with my existing Lord of the Rings Moria Goblin army I am slowly growing for Kings of War.  I have based them on my 3D printed 20mm round bases, the Bones 3 ones have a slightly different style as I have since developed the design, making the later types more hollowed out so I can avoid the minis always standing on a hilltop.

36 goblins are quite a handful to deal with all at once. Being nickled and dimed to death, or experiencing death by a thousand cuts as it were, is still dead.

Goblin Luggits are the ones with two handed weapons in Kings of War Vanguard

Goblin Spitters are the bowmen in Kings of War Vanguard

The rest are just Rabble (in Kings of War Vanguard)

I generally do not like painting identical minis identically, so I switch things up slightly by painting each set of different sculpts in a different base colour, and randomly do the other bits. I keep some bits the same throughout, such as the weapons, shields, or helmets, and also have used the same strong quickshade ink and a very light drybrush with Team Yankee Maverick Khaki, a mid-to-light beige-ish green on all the minis.
This together with the bases give the entire group a cohesive feel, so they appear as a unit while still retaining a sense of individuality,
These are really quite quick to paint, just alot of them to do. I did them in between bouts of playing Payday 2 over the last couple of days.
