The Next To The Last Hurrah: The Red Brotherhood Night Goblin Army

Recommended Posts

Since these are pieces that, while in the same silly vein as those in The Last Hurrah Thread, they really wouldn't work in that setting & are a dead end project. I thought a new thread might be appropriate. The Last Hurrah will still be the ongoing thingy.

One of the Folk on the Reaper Forum posed the question to the community at large: "Do you have a favorite Army?". Photos were requested.

I just happen to have the remains of a nice undefeated Night Goblin, Troll, & Giant Army packed up & sitting in a cardboard box under my work table. They are the last Army I painted & will likely remain so. I was merrily adding to the Beasty when G.W. made some changes, added a new rules book, & hoisted interest in War Hammer at my the local hobby/games store on their own petard....ergo my Army remains undefeated aka never played.

It was originally going to be a (American) White Dwarf Skirmish Game Army, but it grew. When I arrived here in Texas it became apparent that gaming was not in my future. SO friend Edwin "Mordheimer" Molina offered to eBay the lot. I shipped it off to him. He took some photos & sold a couple of the units...the price he got was low enough for me to call the selling off. He returned the remains, which have lurked in their box under the work table, all wrapped up ever since.

SO I posted Edwin's photos & the thought that perhaps I should finally unpack the Lads & take some photos popped unbidden into my head. Ergo, I did, AND will momentarily inflict both Edwin's & my own photos upon you, Gentle Readers.

This is the remains of the Army, fresh fro their box:

...next I'll post the Molina Files & some more detailed pics of the still around crew.

Wow!  Beautiful work. I can't believe that didn't catch more attention on ebay.

I have a goblin army -- not nearly so well painted -- in a box, too.  It saw play once before the friends who got us involved in the game decided to quit. I like to think that they were afraid of my rock thrower. :)

Thanks for the kind reply, Inarah...you reminded be that the bolt thrower was not visible in the top two photos, SO I added a third.

Goblin high tech weapons are fear inducing creations.Sometimes the fear is actually induced by the enemy.

I'm delighted you like them. The first two units: Squigs & Squig Hoppers sold right away. The problem was that Edwin had no idea what they were worth & sold them at less than the cost of the minis...c'est la vie, eh?!

...Edwin had a theory that anything he could eat became his:

...rather than test it out, I told him to consider Lulu permanently on loan to him. The end results could have proven too painful otherwise.

Well, I hope whoever got them cherishes them to this day. That is a beautiful and fearsome-looking army.

Edwin's ever enthusiastic approach to photos & life in general is & was breath taking. I've never posted his picture in there entirety before, but I think it would be the time to do so.

Ergo expanding on the photos above, here are more of Barf O'Bilge's Bounding Boys:

Thanks, Pingo...I'm delighted yo like them. I really don't have a clue where they went. I think they will be okay though.

Wow!  What a fun army!  Fantastic work!   ::):

Thanks for the kind reply, Kuro. Coming from a Master of The Craft, that is quite a compliment.

I'm glad you enjoyed the stuff thus far....more to come.

Quite striking!

Thanks, joshua...glad you like it. Your retinas will eventually feel better.

Wow, they are beautiful, with an amazing spectrum of conversion work to be seen!    So inspiring, and such a labor of love.

Thanks for the kind reply, Chris. I'm delighted you like the flashy Little Rogues.

That was an insightful observation. After decades of painting for Folks ohe than myself, these were the first miniatures I did for the pure joy  of creating...getting in a game was a secondary consideration.

Morbid McMunch's Epicures are next. These like Barf's Boys were sold, & have taken up residence in some unknown locale never to be seen again...love melodrama:

I've got to say your banners are terrific too!  And once again I am admiring all your tiny writing!

Thanks for the reply, Chris. Banners & shields are favorites with me...I guess it shows. The script is just something I enjoy; I have no idea why, but congenital idiocy has not been ruled out.

Really excellent. I'm envious of your skill. Thanks for sharing these.

Thank, Loim. I'm sure you will pass me sometime in the near future. I the meanwhile, thanks for the compliment. I delighted you enjoy them.

...Edwin loves closeups. In addition to the group close ups, he has individual pictures of each of the Troll, which I will post on request:

...next Lulu The Land Waster. Edwin went rather nuts with the Girl; SO I may have to be selective with the photos.

Here's a pair of robots I built to use for this is not a test. They are a mix of privateer press cyriss bodies, assorted gw, Mantic, reaper, and historical bits, and some wire. Was trying to play up the corrosion and damage in the paint.

Anyone who has got the male one of these able to tell me how easy it would be to remove his head for use on another mini?

Finally think I got this group finished up! I've got a soft spot for the dark pulpy weirdness of the "Hellboy" universe, as we have seen.

The idea got into my head to do up the rest of the BPRD Special Operations crew from equally non-official sources. A few months back I got a set of 20+ very cheap miniatures for some superhero boardgame and got it into my head to use them as guilt-free conversion fodder. One of them was pretty spot-on for a younger, less jaded version of the pyrokinetic Liz Sherman. I just added a ring of flame from a Nolzur's aasimar wizard and painted her up. Sculpt was pretty basic and blobby, but I think it gets the point across.

      Click for turnaround:

Another had a costume that looked like it could be painted as a diver's suit, so SNIP went the head, and SQUISH went the green stuff, and with a mechanical-pencil eraser  cap, a jump ring, and some tiny watch parts I turned him into the ectoplasmic medium in a pressure suit, Johann Kraus. Aimed for a compromise between the movie version and the comics version.

Turnaround, so you get all sides of that nice, open face:

The belt pouches are chunks of sprue metal.

And of course who could forget Roger the Homunculus? This was a Nolzur's Clay Golem, and the scale is a bit off, but hey. He's a hulking construct grown from blood and herbs by a deranged alchemist, and the comics are not really consistent about just how big he is. I can overlook it.
Again, watch parts and sprues factored into the conversion to make his lightning capacitor chest and...other distinguishing features. I assure you, it's canonical that it looks even worse if he has pants on.

      You know the drill,

But I know what you came here for...ACTION SHOTS!

      Group photo:

      BONUS HELLBOY VILLAINS!
Waste not! The torso for Kraus lost a head, but a bodiless bald head is perfect for Hermann von Klempt, horrible head-in-a-jar mad scientist. Ape-X makes a good Kriegaffe.

And this project finally gave me something to do with the third Grenadier Vile Villain: a good cultish Rasputin ready to summon some Ogdru Hem and/or Ogdru Jahad.

So I finally fell into the temptation and got my first ground based sci fi minis!(I do have spaceships.)
A Cataphract, conquerer , and a halberd by Reaper minis came in with my horsman today! Sadly the halberd is missing a piece so it may in end up being returned.
So my first order of business was a small conversion to the cataphract
      Before conversion

And the conquerer has donated the necessary parts for said conversion, specifically his smaller missile pods.

A bit of work with an exacto knife removed said weapons.

And a bit more exacto work to make a spot for the pods on the Cataphract.

Some super glue to assemble the cataphract and voila! It is time for paint!

And don’t worry about the Conquerer, I have a conversion in mind for it too. It just might not be a true mech when I’m done.......

More sci-fi stuff to come soon I hope!
And maybe just maybe I’ll try to make a backstory for these guys.
      Thankyou for looking!

Online, from a certain market of miniatures, I found some "Kaosball" team expansion packs on clearance (for a better price than what they're listed at now, as of this writing).  Each pack contains 13 32mm-scale minis in 2 poses (6 of one pose on 25mm square bases, and 7 of an alt pose on 25mm round bases), a "bust" that represents the "team coach," and a game-specific 12-sided die (which I suppose isn't much use for anything, unless I actually wanted to play the game).  Anyway, this worked out to being under $1 a figure, and the sculpts looked interesting, so I got a few packs.  (I find it hilarious, though, that while most of the packs are marked down, the "Felinia Hellcats" -- scantily-clad gun-toting cat-girls -- are specifically marked as "[CLEARANCE]" and yet they're priced at about 3x the asking price for each of the other teams.)

I originally picked these guys up (the "Samaria Barbarians") with a vague intent that "someday" I would run a Savage Worlds convention one-shot scenario heavily inspired by the "Brütal Legend" video game ... but it occurred to me that few if any of my players would have heard of that game, and I'm no particular "expert" on anything rock-and-roll-related, so maybe I'm not the best person to GM such a setting.

However, I could always use a few more post-apocalyptic wastelanders.  The "big hair" style here doesn't necessarily look like it would fit the current Fallout aesthetic as established in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, but I think these guys wouldn't look terribly out of place in the original Fallout 1 & 2 (what with all the "Mad Max" and "Fist of the North Star" wannabes wandering about in those games).  I removed the figures from their bases, putty-and-texture-stamped the 25mm round bases, putty-and-texture-stamped some plastic 25mm rounds for the remaining figures, and did a few hand swaps and bit-add-ons to give a few of the figures visible ranged weaponry.  (I figured that would give me a little more buy-in if I were to field a gang of these guys for an encounter and then they start FIRING on the PCs, versus what pushback I might get if they *appeared* to only be armed with axes.)

I used some paper printed license plates to add some "junk armor" elements to further reinforce the "post-apocalyptic" vibe.

Each team pack also comes with a "bust" to represent the team coach.  I went with a bronze-and-verdigris scheme for each.
