Annual Reaper Forums Large Model Challenge Changes or improvements Discussion

Recommended Posts

If anyone wants to run this years contest, please let me know.

Categories have been:

40-99mm wide/tall (Reaper only)
100mm+ wide/tall (Reaper only)
Diorama
Non Reaper models over 40mm wide/tall

we only had 4 diorama entries this year, and a DDS2 that should probably have been in there versus the other category..

Given that we are getting so few.. I am questioning if we want to get rid of it, or offer fewer prizes.

there was a request to make the non Reaper category open to Busts as well..

thoughts?

What's required by the coordinator?

Are you able to enter your own stuff since you aren't judging?

Yes, I think busts should be allowed in the nonreaper category

Drop prize support for diorama/vignettes to top rated/judged and a single random perhaps.

I entered busts before.

Would like to be able to do that again in the Non Reaper Category.

I love to see dioramas, but if the category proves unpopulair, then drop it.

Aw, and here I've actually put paint on my DDS2 this year.

I'm fine with allowing busts in somewhere.  Normally I wouldn't like mixing them with everything else, but considering it is Reaper's forum, lumping everything not-Reaper in together in one category makes a certain kind of sense.

I've planned to participate in the diorama competition for several years now, but life happend each time, and here I am with my request to keep the diorama category in, even if the prize support is dropped. My circumstances have improved immensly and I have and idea and most, if not all, of the figures I'll need to do, what I hope is a cool diorama. If the diorama cat stays this year, I plan to use it to flesh out, to completion, a few ideas that will then be folded into an expanded project for ReaperCon 2018.

Personally, I also think the diorama category should be kept even if that means removing the 2nd prize. Diorama are probably least successful because they demand more time and ability to build but they're the best way to express creativity. A random prize could be added just if the number of participent reachs five.

I like the diorama category and wish it would stay, but I understand the need to have similar competition in different categories. Lack of prize will discourage people from entering even further, I'm afraid. Maybe introduce an additional rule that prizes in any category will be cut by half (or other amount) if number of entries in it is smaller than X (5? 10?)

Busts in non-reaper category - definitely, as long as they are not micro-busts (40mm at least).

I think someone needs to be checking the entries and move them to good categories if necessary. We had 2 Ebonwraths in 2 different categories this year, Cinder in 40-99 category... these look like obvious mistakes.

Well, as I am planning at least 1 diorama / vignette, I hope the category remains....

The dioramas do take up a lot of time, but I think they are well worth doing....

I am kind of surprised that more folks didn't enter, I saw a lot of beautiful dioramas at Reapercon.....

I have my DDS2 to enter so I would also vote to keep the diorama category. I also have no problem with pieces that have won/placed in other competitions being allowed to enter.

Not a lot really.. make sure stuff is entered in the right category, arrange judges, try and get donations for non-reaper prizes, work with Kit to verify prizes for the contest and then send Kit a message with the winners so they get their prizes...

And yes, you can enter since you are not judging.. i also remove myself from the count when i roll dice to determine random winners

Speaking of Reapercon, should we still allow entries that won trophies at RCon?

I don't have this issue since I cannot attend ReaperCon, the forum is the only way I can enter any contest and show off my stuff. My opinion is only people who hasn't already won a prize at RCon should be allowed to enter the forum contest.

At some point, when I had already been rewarded for something I painted, I prefer to let someone else get the chance to win and be encouraged for his efforts. For this reason, I like the only-one-prize per person rule and the random prize to encourage participation.

Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites.

We have a high volume of posts generated from this challenge, which is great! But it's also creating a lot of work for the mods. Ladystorm has already urged folks to comply with these guidelines.

As an works well, this challengehas been moved to be a bi-monthly challenge again. The longer time frame theoretically will give less stress to painting, and allow more complex jobs, and more sinister challenges.

      FAQ
      Reaper only? - No.
If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes.
Are speed paints acceptable - Yes.
Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes.
      Based or unbased? - Yes.
Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes.

      NEW RULE - Size Equivilancy
(This list is subject to change as bones 3 releases)
Medium and smaller = 1 ea
Simple Terrain (plain floors, walls) = 1ea
Complex Terrain (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Terrain/latest/03518 or such) = 2 ea
Large (Giants and the like) = 2 ea
Huge (Most dragons, Demon Minotaur Lord, etc) = 3 ea
Bigger (Kally, Khanjirra, etc) = half of quota rounded up
      Colossal ("Tianot,") = quota

Due to the variable nature of a CAV I compare them against a generic 28mm figure and the Avatar large figure. I take height and bulk into considering if it is worth 1 or 2 figures.
If it's not in this list, it counts as 1. (not yet updated for the CAV II/III figures)

If you have a question on the size, please post it here, and I'll address them individually.

Much like last year, the idea is to help those of us that normally paint VERY little or not as much as one would like, to start painting more.

      You challenge begins...now!

      And Our Mantra:

      Participants:
If your name is missing, or you believe your count is incorrect, please PM me. Please note: to make counts easier, post in the bi-monthly thread and include the tag RPChallenge

      The objective:
To paint 52+ minis throughout the course of the year via bi-monthly quota
(each bi-monthly thread will have the quota listed as well as the master list)
I request that when tagging your posts, please use "RPChallenge" to help with locating minis from this - I am making a more concentrated effort in 'bookkeeping' this year. If someone would be willing to assist in such, it would be much appreciated.

      What qualifies:
      Darn near anything!
      Reaper/non-reaper!
      Any material!
Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten!
      Exchange minis!
      Speed paints!
Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well)
      Any Size!
      Based/unbased!
Etc! (I think that covers everything)

      Year long challenge
Pick a miniature of size large or greater to complete in the Jan-Feb Block. In Nov-December, purchase (if needed) that same mini and repaint in the same scheme to see direct side-by-side improvement or changes in your methods

      LE GASP! I'm on time!

Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual.

All the information you need should be here.

Due to the revised format, there will be more than one bonus challenge available for this month. Including a "Hard mode" which Is some combination that may or may not have a source behind it.

      Your challenge is: 8!

      Bonus Challenge: The First!
Hindsight! - OK let's be obvious, you SAW this coming. *rimshot* paint a miniature with glasses!

      Bonus Challenge: The Second!
Our annual favorite challenge returns. February Fingerpaint!
Pick a miniature that is NOT terrain.
      This is pretty self explanatory.

      Hard Mode Challenge!
February holds "National Margarita Day" and often hand-in-hand with the tropical drink, is gaudy 'Aloha' clothing! Paint a mini if your choice where the majority of the exposed surface must be free-handed in the mannerism of such! Yes that's a lot of freehand.
(I honestly just wanna see someone paint a slime covered in freehanded palm trees >.>)

      Good luck

All the information you need should be here.

As usual, the new format holds a "hard mode" challenge!

The Last quarter of the year 2019 because real life is a bugbear sometimes.

      Your challenge is: 18!

      Bonus Challenge: 1!
Fall! Paint a mini that has fallen over (for whatever reason) (Pompeii guy works for this too!)

      Bonus Challenge: 2!
This is Halloween! - Paint a mini using only colors that have black, orange, and purple in the name. You may also use the paints available from this year's ghoulie bag.

      Bonus Challenge: 5!
Festive feast - Since both US And Canada have their Thanksgiving in this time bracket - paint up a mini (figure or terrain) to have some food being presented, if you can do a drinking vessel to be painting like a full glass, even better!

      Bonus Challenge: 4!
For-lack-of-a-better-idea- December 15th is national Cat Herders' day! Paint a tabaxi, or any other mini featuring a feline. (It's a real holiday, go ahead, look it up)

      Hard Mode Challenge 1!
Jack-o-lantern's light - Paint a mini where the only source of light would be coming from inside a jack-o-lantern. Pumpkin may be part of the mini/base or sculpted

      Hard Mode Challenge 2!
Under Wraps- Paint a mini so that anything that any non-flesh (armor-weapons-cloth-etc) looks like it's patterned wrapping paper. This is assuming a humanoid figure. Dragons or such apply the same challenge to the whole body.

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

      July and August 2019 Challenge

      Your challenge is: 9!

      Bonus Challenge: The First!
Independence Day! Both Canada and the US celebrate their independence days in July. Keeping it clean - paint a mini that resembles the most absurd stereotype of the country, whether it's a lumberjack riding a moose with a jug of maple syrup, or a fat dude in a scooter with the american flag and a big mac.  Or something from the film Independence Day, that works too.

      Bonus Challenge: The Second!
August 22nd is National Spumoni day. 3-layered Gelato dish. Paint any mini in a themed pallet around your choice image of said dish.

      Hard Mode Challenge! Eruption
Also in August is the fabled eruption of Pompeii. A full-size diorama is a but much to ask - but instead theme a mini around trying to escape the eruption (lava flows, flying chunks of rock, etc) particularly utilizing the OSL and an ashen look.

As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

This is just straight up sad from every angle.

The reason it gets my attention is that many of us have visited this location. This happened on the parking lot attached to the venue ReaperCon used two years running.

It may have spilled out of a high-school party held in that same event Center. (That tidbit was in the TV news this evening.)

(Btw, The URL title/headline was not as accurate as it could have been but I guess that is an artifact of early less than accurate reporting. Woman is not so accurate: Amya Alane Batie was just 16.)
