Bloodiedfallen
The reason I was asking is because I have a friend whos birthday is coming up and he is a HUGE Lovecraft fan. I just want to give him something hand made and unique for his Birthday. I do kinda like the pink with polka dots idea though!!!
lowlylowlycook
You can see some of what other people have done here. If you need some paint names, people often share what shades they use in the WIP forum.

redambrosia
Paint him your buddy's favorite colours. Alternately, paint him their least favorite colours. He is supposed to drive you insane at the sight of him...
Glitterwolf
Also google some Cthulhu artwork for inspiration.
Kheprera
Purples and greens are very popular. As suggested, I'd look at octopus and squid pictures for inspiration. But you are only limited by your imagination.

RouterMike
Another vote that green, grey and purple seem to be appropriate colors. Maybe I'm programmed by Hollywood, but monsters/evil things are usually muted dark colors. Nature generally uses bright colors to ward off predators or find a mate. I'm sure an Elder God has no need to scare away anything, and will mate with whatever it wants.
Gondren
Do you really get to choose how Cthulu gets painted? I always assumed when you pick up the brush to paint him he corrupts your soul and you enter a trance like state doing his bidding till he is finished :P
