Warlord - the state of play

Recommended Posts

Once Gus took over the Reaper Game store, it seems Warlod has not had any official Reaper support. The Warlord tourney at ReaperCon has long been run by independent fans of the game, as well as the RAGE based convention games. This past ReaperCon seems to have been the end of an era with a notable lack of Warlord tourney, and the only RAGE games being the dungeon crawls.

I'm glad to see Herzog picking up the banner. Even though I haven't played a game in about 18 months, it is a very enjoyable ruleset and welcome its return to glory.

I agree the final coffin nailing began with the disbanding of Black Lighting. I really enjoy 2nd eds rule set however, ever more than I did 1st edition. I felt it streamlined things a bit, made it all even simpler and fast paced - which is precisely what I like about the game. My gaming group (of 4 dedicated "every time" players and at least 8 "occasional" players) has played at least one session a month for several years now. The only problem we have is lack of over all players. Even though most of us have more than 1 army, the brains beind the forces remain the same.

I welcome Herzog picking up the support, and hope something comes of it for sure. I'm hesitant about anyone picking up the rules and altering them though. I think they are near perfect the way they are and would not be too keen to see a lot of changes. New units and factions would be great and very welcome however. Thinking critically though, a re-write and/or new units/factions wouid be a useless gesture though if the player base doesn't get expanded.

Another thing that players in my area didn't like was the end of the ranking system from Reaper Games.

I've never heard of Herzog Games.   What else have they done?  I couldn't find anything online about this.   Has this been announced by Reaper?

I'd be interested in helping with any playtesting after this confirmed by Reaper as something that is happening.   Anything I can do to help get this game back going, I plan to do.

For anyone interested in playing who lives in the Detroit area,  I am planning to setting up a game or tournament at U-Con in Ann Arbor, MI this year.   My plan is to bring some loaner forces for players to join who don't have their own figures and use it to try and drum up some interest.

My guess is a few things hampered Warlord:

Lack of cards and obvious packaging on the figure blisters.   The cards were hit and miss if they were packaged together and even when you had cards, they weren't of card material.   I think better packaging would have helped people remember that these awesome figures they are buying for RPGing or for collecting also have a game with them.

Lack of marketing.   Time after time, I would talk to people who didn't know Reaper had a game, let alone that it was good!   Since they never heard of it until I mentioned it, they often assumed it must not have been very good.   People are often that way.

Thought that it would be expensive.   Being an all-metal miniature line is something that I think wrongfully scared people away from trying it.   I often heard people tell me that they liked Reaper for that occasional character in D&D because they thought the figures were great but that getting regular units in metal would be too expensive.   I pointed out the minimal number of figures you would need to play, but now Bones is an even better answer.   Already, many forces can cover their soldiers in Bones miniatures and the few that can't are probably only a matter of time.   Some great leader figures are also available right now in Bones.   For this reason, above all others, I think it is time for Warlord to rise!

Nuadha - Like you I could not find any infor on Herzog games, and I do not know what they are all about. I'd also appreciate some info if anyone has it. I'm happy about anyone trying to revive the game however (providing it stays the same game, or very close to it).

I agree with your points also - especially the Lack of Marketing. I think that was the biggest overall problem. I was really wondering what (if anything) could be done about it, and that was my question for the Reaper Powers that be.

@Nuahda and ThatDeadGuy:  My guess is that Herzog Games is a new company associated with herzogbrian (a long time member of these boards and supporter of Warlord).  Based upon his statement, it doesn't seem taht many rules changes will be forthcoming (i.e "reformating" and "optional rules").

I for one, am looking forward to seeing the result of the project and am hoping the best for it's outcome.  Now to see if any of the NEMPA members want to do some play testing....

Yep, so brand new that we would rather work on getting a product ready now and deal with setting up a website later, so stay tuned.

I would like to clarify what is happening and make sure we are all on the same sheet of music.

Warlord is still an active line and not going anywhere.

- Herzog is simply been given permission to use the RAGE Engine that powers Warlord and will change it to suit their needs.

- We have always freely allowed developers to use our models in their world and can rename them etc.

- Use of the IP associated with Warlord (Name, Characters, World etc.) Have not been granted or licensed to anyone for use.

- All Warlord books are still in print.

- All models are still being produced.

- Herzog Games is not associated with Hobby-Q/Reaper in any way and this is not a partnership to develop a new game.

And so my post has come full circle   So now that I have some higher up attention let me ask: Is there any official plan to increase Warlords exposure and generate more interest? If so would I be of assistance to you in doing so? If not is it possible to create one? My undead hunger for new souls to reap!

If they create a stretch goal in the KS to fund the development of the Warlord PDF, it could be early, where a $5,000 intermediate goal would accomplish a lot to create the PDF. Then, a $15 or $20 buy in for the printed edition would help fund other things as well.

I have some technical writing/editing skills that I will exchange for minis. I can also do page design, page layout, etc. All for minis!

As some of you know, @buglips*the*goblin and I paint some German Infantry of WWII for Warlord Games tabletop game Bolt Action - or another similar set of rules. You can find our WIP thread ->here<-

But though the key to success is hard work, all good projects some when end somewhere. To celebrate this, we decided to set up a Show Off thread. So ... enjoy what we come up with until all of our Germans are painted ... (which will be in ten years or so)

First off - the first 5 men of my winter unit.

      Enjoy

@SisterMaryNapalm and I both have some German Grenadiers (and I think he was some Fallschirmjager as well) that we are working on, and since that's a fine coincidence I thought it would be fun to share a thread with our work on them.  I know we're at least using somewhat different paints, and possibly also different methods, so it might be interesting to see how they turn out.

These are mine from the Bolt Action Band of Brothers starter set.  I have another squad, but all of those are wearing standard Feldgrau uniforms so they're represented here by the Leutnant with binoculars and map, and the NCO with field cap and submachinegun.  Most of the others are wearing camouflaged tent quarters, so that should prove... challenging.  At this stage, I've assembled them, primed them with stynylrez, and they've got a coat of VMC Feldgrau that I darkened 50/50 with Reaper Brown Liner.  They're more assembled than I'd probably prefer, but I'm used to figures with fewer pieces so I haven't quite got a working method worked out for multipart multioption plastic figures yet.  I don't expect it will be too much trouble.  I hope not, anyway.

Apologies for any craptacular photos, I'm compelled to use my ancient Galaxy S3 and haven't yet replaced my camera.  Frankenphone sometimes works, and sometimes it calls in sick.

My painting time is pretty limited these days, but I still fit it in here and there. I find elementals to be excellent and relaxing subjects for brief speedpainting sessions; their crude natures are very forgiving for the time-constrained.

This guy is a pretty hefty piece of metal & a nice unique sculpt.

I started painting these in 2007!  I had received two sets on clearance from a gaming website.
I picked them up again briefly in 2011.
I had just purchased a bunch of Vallejo Game Colors.
I recently picked them up again to get them off the shelf of shame that they seemed to be permanent fixtures of.
Sadly, the VGC Paints were not able to salvage.  One of them was more done than the others, so he looks a little different.
The front right of the first picture.
I finished them off quickly with Reaper paints.

This was the first time I primed minis white, then built up layers of very thinned basecoats.
It made these guys much brighter.

Sorry some of the pics are out of focus.

I am thinking to do the next set more black/red or more of a realistic lizard scheme.
      Enjoy.
